Malignant external otitis (MEO) is a devastating external auditory canal infection usually occurring in the elderly with diabetes. MEO often progresses to potentially lethal skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) complications such as meningitis or multiple cranial nerve palsies. Poor vascularity in affected tissue due to diabetic microangiopathy and Pseudomonal infection is thought responsible for refractory infection. We conducted intraarterial antibiotic infusion (IA) in the external carotid artery of two subjects with intractable MEO deteriorating after long-term intravenous antibiotic administrat

Articular cartilage is a remarkably resilient tissue capable of withstanding considerable stress and repeated loading. Since this tissue has no blood vessels, nerve elements, or lymphatics, it is not surprising that it has a limited capacity for repair when damaged. In the horse, cartilage damage occurs as an occupational hazard. Furthermore, developmental defects such as osteochondrosis can lead to osteochondritis dissecans. Resultant cartilage flaps, fissures, and poorly organized subchondral bone produce disruption of joint surfaces.Veterinarians are often called upon to intervene when dama

The outgrowth of neurites from spinal ganglia in tissue culture may be affected by many variables including medium constituents and the age of ganglia. If E15 rats were used, the rate of outgrowth from ganglion explants in response to nerve growth factor was independent of the cranial-caudal position from which the ganglia were derived. This contrasts with the cranial-to-caudal gradient present during embryonic development. The effect of serum on this outgrowth was also studied and ten of 17 lots of human placental serum, two of three lots of pooled human placental serum, and one of two lots o

Three hundred and forty-seven tissue specimens were studied from 23 patients with male pattern alopecia. Characteristic features of pattern alopecia included: the presence of miniature or vellus follicles; a marked enlargement of the sebaceous glands and arrectores pilorum muscles; the presence of connective tissue streamers beneath the vellus follicles; and the thinning of the dermis. A mild perivascular infiltrate of mononuclear cells and mild capillary dilatation was sometimes seen. An increased number of mast cells was often a prominent feature. Histochemical procedures were performed for

Fat-containing tumors are the most common soft-tissue tumors encountered clinically. The vast majority of fat-containing soft-tissue masses are benign. Lipomas are the most common benign fat-containing masses and demonstrate a characteristic appearance at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Less common benign soft-tissue masses include lipoblastoma, angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma/pleomorphic lipoma, myolipoma, chondroid lipoma, lipomatosis of nerve, lipomatosis, hibernoma, and fat necrosis. Well-differentiated liposarcomas (WDLPSs)/atypical lipomatous tumors (ALTs) are locally aggressive soft-t

BACKGROUND: Cervical myelomeningocele (MMC) is a very rare neural type defect that is usually discovered and managed in childhood. It is best described as a closed type of spinal dysraphism, where the posterior portion of the cervical thecal sac forms a pouch that bulges out through a narrow posterior spina bifida and contains spinal neural tissue with or without cerebrospinal fluid.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 47-year-old male patient who presented with neck pain and decreased ability to use his fingers that had progressed over 3 years before presentation. Cervical spine magnetic resonance

This article describes the discovery of a chronic cervical wooden foreign body ventral to the left transverse processes of the cranial cervical spine using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a dog that presented with chronic neck pain and lameness. The dog did not exhibit dysphagia or chronic draining tracts, the most common signs of the presumed cause, that of a penetrating oropharyngeal foreign body. The foreign body itself was represented on MR images as an oval straight-edged core within an inflammatory tissue reaction. The wood was slightly hyperintense on T2- and isointense on T1-weight

Lipofibromatous hamartoma (LFH) is a rare benign tumor typically characterized by fibrofatty infiltration and proliferation within nerve fascicles, often having a predilection for the median and ulnar nerves. In this case, a 53-year-old woman presented with a painful mass of the left distal forearm that had been present for several years. She had intermittent tingling of the thumb, index, and middle fingers, and a limited range of motion (ROM) in wrist flexion and extension. The percussion test was positive, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 3 cm lobulated lesion along the ulnar

Diabetes exacerbates the development and progression of periodontitis through the aggravation of persistent inflammation and tissue destruction. While the impact of diabetes on peripheral sensory nerves is well-documented, little is known about the role of diabetic neuropathy in bone destruction in diabetes-associated periodontitis. Herein, a significant loss of periodontal nerves is observed in the diabetic state of db/db mice, with trigeminal ganglion neurons showing decreased autophagy. These mice exhibit decreased density of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)+ nerves, correlating with

In this article, we report a rare case of an optic nerve metastasis secondary to lung adenocarcinoma. The ocular manifestation was the first clinical sign of the disease, and further investigation led to the diagnosis of the underlying malignancy. A 59-year-old woman presented with progressive blurring of vision in the right eye for the past month. She had been having headaches for the past two weeks and left upper limb weakness for one day. She also had loss of appetite and weight for the past few months. She looked lethargic. On presentation, her bilateral eye vision was 6/18. Both anterior

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is the causative agent for Aujeszky's disease, a disease that mainly affects pigs and incidentally other domestic and wild animals. While PRV is almost always fatal, causing neurological disease independently of the age in non-porcine species, the development of neurological manifestation in its host species, the pig, highly depends on the age. In this study, an attempt was made to investigate the effect of nerve development on the outcome of virus infection and the effect of virus infection on the structure of nerves in piglets of various ages. For that reason, 42 pig

Despite recent advancements in therapeutic options for disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), the lack of an efficient drug-delivery system (DDS) hampers their clinical application. We hypothesized that liposomes could be optimized for retrograde transport in axons as a DDS from peripheral tissues to the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). Three types of liposomes consisting of DSPC, DSPC/POPC, or POPC in combination with cholesterol (Chol) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) lipid were administered to sciatic nerves or the tibialis anterior muscle of mature rats. Liposomes in cell b

Several evidences support the hypothesis that patients affected by autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ASPKD) show a sympathetic renal hyperactivity. Nevertheless, no morphological evidences are available yet. Therefore, the aim of the study was to demonstrate that an increase in sympathetic renal artery innervation was present in the ADPKD patients by using histological methods. In addition, here we correlated the sympathetic renal artery innervation with the evolutionary state of ADPKD (increase in volume of kidney, onset of chronic renal failure and hypertension). To this end, per

The early development of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) was linked to the discovery of electricity. This relationship had been concluded by observing the effect of applying electricity to the body of an animal and discovering that nerves and muscles themselves could produce electricity. We attempt to review the historical evolution of NCS and EMG over the last three centuries by reviewing the landmark publications of Galvani, Adrian, Denny-Brown, Larrabee, and Lambert. In 1771, Galvani showed that electrical stimulation of animal muscle tissue produced contraction an

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury is a frequent cause of lasting motor deficits and chronic pain. Although peripheral nerves are capable of regrowth they often fail to re-innervate target tissues.
RESULTS: Using newly generated transgenic mice with inducible neuronal progranulin overexpression we show that progranulin accelerates axonal regrowth, restoration of neuromuscular synapses and recovery of sensory and motor functions after injury of the sciatic nerve. Oppositely, progranulin deficient mice have long-lasting deficits in motor function tests after nerve injury due to enhanced losses

The aim of the study was to investigate the presence and distribution of the chromogranin A-derived peptide catestatin in the rat eye and trigeminal ganglion by immunofluorescence using an antibody which recognizes not only free catestatin but also larger fragments containing the sequence of catestatin. Western blots were performed in an attempt to characterize the immunoreactivities detected by the catestatin antiserum. Sparse immunoreactive nerve fibers were visualized in the corneal stroma, in the chamber angle, in the sphincter muscle but also in association with the dilator muscle, in the
