Determining Malnutrition Assessment Criteria to Predict One-Year Mortality for Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy.

Study on the impact of pretreatment malnutrition on treatment outcomes in locally advanced head and neck cancer (LAHNC) patients is still lacking. We prospectively collected various malnutrition assessment methods including nutrition indexes, inflammatory biomarkers, and lean body mass index (LBMI) data before treatments. The one year mortality rate was assessed, and the factors associated with this outcome were investigated. Furthermore, the association between malnutrition assessment methods was examined. A total of 113 patients were enrolled. By prognostic stratification based on the progno

Broad-Ranging Nutritional Deficiencies Predict Amputation in Diabetic Foot Ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers present across the spectrum of nonhealing wounds, be it acute or many months duration. There is developing literature highlighting that despite this group having high caloric intake, they often lack the micronutrients essential for wound healing. This study reports a retrospective cohort of patients' micro- and macro-nutritional state and its relationship to amputation. A retrospective cohort was observed over a 2-month period at one of Australia's largest tertiary referral centers for diabetic foot infection and vascular surgery. Patient information, duration of ulcer, va

Impact of Maternal Nutrition and Perinatal Factors on Breast Milk Composition after Premature Delivery.

(1) Background: Premature infants require mothers' milk fortification to meet nutrition needs, but breast milk composition may be variable, leading to the risk of inadequate nutrition. We aimed at determining the factors influencing mothers' milk macronutrients. (2) Methods: Milk samples were analyzed for the first five weeks after premature delivery by infrared spectroscopy. Mothers' nutritional intake data were obtained during standardized interviews with dieticians, and then analyzed with reference software. (3) Results: The composition of 367 milk samples from 81 mothers was (median (range

Newborn Health Indicators Associated with Maternal Age during First Pregnancy.

Delaying motherhood is becoming increasingly common, raising questions of the possible influence that maternal age may have on newborn health. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the association between maternal age and different newborn health parameters. An observational study was conducted in Spain on primiparous women and their infants. Data were collected on newborn health variables, breastfeeding, and different clinical practices that are beneficial for child health and development. Crude and adjusted mean differences were calculated along with the standard error of t

An operationalized version of the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form using comprehensive geriatric assessment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We sought to operationalize some of the items of the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) according to Barthel Index (BI), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scores among older hospitalized patients in order to optimize the concordance of aforementioned tools. In addition, we assessed comparability and interchangeability of operationalized MNA-SF and standard MNA-SF which have not been performed so far. METHODS: 358 older participants (250 women) aged ≥60 years who were consecutively admitted at geriatric hospital ward wer

Malnutrition and Associated Disorders in Tuberculosis and Its Therapy.

Tuberculosis (TB) has become the most important infectious disease to see resurgence worldwide. In 2014, there were 9.6 million documented cases worldwide with a mortality of almost 1.5 million (Global Tuberculosis Report 2014). One of the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations was the reversal of the TB epidemic, which has been achieved worldwide with an 18% lower incidence of TB globally compared to the incidence in the year 2000. Though efficient intervention has brought down the relative incidence and mortality of TB globally, the fact remains that one third of the world po

Coffee for Cardioprotection and Longevity.

Coffee, a complex brew containing hundreds of biologically active compounds, exerts potent effects on long-term human health. Recently, a plethora of studies have been published focusing on health outcomes associated with coffee intake. An inverse association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality has been seen consistently in large prospective studies. Habitual coffee consumption is also associated with lower risks for cardiovascular (CV) death and a variety of adverse CV outcomes, including coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (HF), and stroke; coffee's effects

Plantago ovata in broiler chicken nutrition: Performance, carcass criteria, intestinal morphology, immunity, and intestinal bacterial population.

In this experiment, the effect of dietary Plantago ovata (PO) on performance, carcass criteria, intestinal morphology, immunity, and intestinal bacterial population of broiler chickens was evaluated. A total of 250 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to five treatments containing 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 g/kg of PO with five replicate pens and 10 birds in each replicate. Dietary PO increased body weight gain and decreased feed conversion ratio in the finisher period, improving the performance index (p < .05). Dietary treatments had no effects on carcass criteria, but b

The association of weight loss with one-year mortality in hospital patients, stratified by BMI and FFMI subgroups.

BACKGROUND: The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) has recently published consensus-based criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition; in subjects identified at nutritional risk the diagnosis is confirmed by either BMI <18.5 kg/m2 or weight loss in combination with low BMI or low FFMI. Concerns have been raised whether this definition correctly classifies malnutrition in patients with normal weight or overweight and concomitant weight loss. Therefore, the aim of this research is to assess the association between weight loss and one-year mortality in hospitalized pati

Assessment of iron status in settings of inflammation: challenges and potential approaches.

The determination of iron status is challenging when concomitant infection and inflammation are present because of confounding effects of the acute-phase response on the interpretation of most iron indicators. This review summarizes the effects of inflammation on indicators of iron status and assesses the impact of a regression analysis to adjust for inflammation on estimates of iron deficiency (ID) in low- and high-infection-burden settings. We overviewed cross-sectional data from 16 surveys for preschool children (PSC) (n = 29,765) and from 10 surveys for nonpregnant women of reproductive ag

Malnutrition in geriatric trauma patients: Screening methods in comparison.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in geriatric patients is very common and an important outcome factor when treating injuries and fractures. There is actually no clear definition of the term malnutrition or recommendation for a screening method. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the nutritional status of geriatric trauma patients using different screening procedures. We tested whether the body mass index (BMI) gives indication for malnutrition or if there is a correlation with more specific test procedures. METHODS: The BMI and the data of three specific screening procedures, Subj

Standard values of rapid turnover proteins and zinc in Japanese children.

Measurement of rapid-turnover proteins has an established place in nutrition assessment and is partly dependent on the zinc metallo-enzymes involved. We investigated the reference values of rapid turnover proteins and zinc in Japanese children. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a single center. We collected data from children aged 0 to 12 years with inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, or hydrocele of the spermatic cord, who had body mass index z scores of -2 to 2. The standard references (mean±2 SD) of transthyretin were 11.5-21.5 mg/dL in infants (<=1.5 years), 13.6-21.5 mg/dL in pre

Combining nutrition and exercise to optimize survival and recovery from critical illness: Conceptual and methodological issues.

Survivors of critical illness commonly experience neuromuscular abnormalities, including muscle weakness known as ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). ICU-AW is associated with delayed weaning from mechanical ventilation, extended ICU and hospital stays, more healthcare-related hospital costs, a higher risk of death, and impaired physical functioning and quality of life in the months after ICU admission. These observations speak to the importance of developing new strategies to aid in the physical recovery of acute respiratory failure patients. We posit that to maintain optimal muscle mass, strengt

Undernutrition, the acute phase response to infection, and its effects on micronutrient status indicators.

Infection and undernutrition are prevalent in developing countries and demonstrate a synergistic relation. Undernutrition increases infection-related morbidity and mortality. The acute phase response (APR) is an innate, systemic inflammatory reaction to a wide array of disruptions in a host's homeostasis, including infection. Released from immune cells in response to deleterious stimuli, proinflammatory cytokines act on distant tissues to induce behavioral (e.g., anorexia, weakness, and fatigue) and systemic effects of the APR. Cytokines act to increase energy and protein requirements to manif

The effect of overweight and nutrition on prognosis in breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Body weight and nutrition are known to play an important role in its pathogenesis. The question thus arises whether lifestyle factors might influence the prognosis of breast cancer, potentially offering new approaches for secondary prevention. METHODS: We selectively searched the Medline database for all studies and meta-analyses on this topic that were published from 1966 to June 2010. We evaluated the cohort studies, interventional trials, and meta-analyses with respect to three target variables: tumor recurrence, tumor-specific

Can multi-micronutrient food fortification improve the micronutrient status, growth, health, and cognition of schoolchildren? A systematic review.

Micronutrient deficiencies compromise the health and development of many school-age children worldwide. Previous research suggests that micronutrient interventions might benefit the health and development of school-age children and that multiple micronutrients might be more effective than single micronutrients. Fortification of food is a practical way to provide extra micronutrients to children. Earlier reviews of (multiple) micronutrient interventions in school-age children did not distinguish between supplementation or fortification studies. The present review includes studies that tested th
