The Impact of Air Pollution on Outpatient Visits of Children with Asthma in Xi'an, China.

INTRODUCTION: The number of children with asthma has increased significantly in China. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in … a 10 ug·m-3 increase in concentration, during a lag of 21 d. CONCLUSIONS: A high concentration of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) was the prominent feature of air pollution in Xi'an. Exposure to air pollutant (PM2.5, PM10, SO2) was positively associated with an increased risk of children's outpatient visits for asthma in Xi'an.

How severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 aerosol propagates through the age-specific upper airways.

The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 causes significant respirational health problems, including high mortality rates worldwide. The deadly corona virus-containing aerosol enters the atmospheric air through sneezing, exhalation, or talking, assembling with the particulate matter, and subsequently transferring to the respiratory system. This recent outbreak illustrates that the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus-2 is deadlier for aged people than for other age groups. It is evident that the airway diameter reduces with age, and an accurate understanding of SARS aerosol transpor…

Gene-environment interactions between air pollution and biotransformation enzymes and risk of birth defects.

Genetic and environmental factors have been observed to influence risks for birth defects, though few studies have investigated gene-environment interactions. Our aim was to examine the interaction terms of gene variants in biotransformation enzyme pathways and air pollution exposures in relation to risk of several structural birth defects. We evaluated the role of ambient air pollutant exposure (nitrogen dioxide [NO2 ], nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter <10 [PM10 ] and <2.5 [PM2.5 ] microns) during pregnancy and 104 gene variants of biotransformation enzymes from infant bloo…

The environmental footprint of health care: a global assessment.

BACKGROUND: Health-care services are necessary for sustaining and improving human wellbeing, yet they have an environmental footprint that c … used on seven environmental stressors with known adverse feedback cycles: greenhouse gas emissions, particulate matter, air pollutants (nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide), malaria risk, reactive nitrogen in water, and scarce water use. FINDINGS: Health care causes global environmental impacts that, depending on which indicator is considered, range between 1% and …

Joint recording of contamination status, multi-element dynamics, and source identification on a sub-catchment scale: The example Lahn River (Germany).

Investigations on the enrichment level, binding dynamics, and source identification of contaminants are important objectives of environmental research into surface waters, but are often carried out independently of each other. To simultaneously address these issues an investigative approach is presented that combines multi-element analyses of water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) and is applied on the scale of a sub-catchment, using the Lahn River (Germany) as an example. Analyses of water and SPM comprised phosphorus (P), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (…

The genotoxicological assessment of a tobacco heating product relative to cigarette smoke using the in vitro micronucleus assay.

In vitro studies have supported the toxicological evaluation of chemicals and complex mixtures including cigarette smoke and novel tobacco and nicotine products which include tobacco heating products (THP). This new environment requires faster testing, higher throughput and appropriate in vitro studies, to support product innovation and development. In this study, total particulate matter (TPM) from a commercially available THP and a reference cigarette (3R4F) were assessed up to 500 μg/mL using two in vitro micronucleus techniques. V79 and TK6 cells were assessed using conventional OECD 487 m…

Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of outdoor air pollution exposure and cognitive function in UK Biobank.

Observational studies have shown consistently increased likelihood of dementia or mild cognitive impairment diagnoses in people with higher air pollution exposure history, but evidence has been less consistent for associations with cognitive test performance. We estimated the association between baseline neighbourhood-level exposure to airborne pollutants (particulate matter and nitrogen oxides) and (1) cognitive test performance at baseline and (2) cognitive score change between baseline and 2.8-year follow-up, in 86,759 middle- to older-aged adults from the UK Biobank general population coho…

Prenatal exposure to fine particles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and birth outcomes: a two-pollutant approach.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiologic studies have considered the effects of individual air pollutants on birth outcomes, whereas a multiple-pollutant approach is more relevant to public health policy. OBJECTIVES: The present study compared the observed effect sizes of prenatal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) (a component of PM2.5) exposures on birth outcome deficits, assessed by the single vs. two-pollutant approaches. METHODS: The study sample included 455 term infants born in Krakow to non-smoking mothers, among whom personal exposures to PM2.5 and …

Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Role of ChemR23 Signaling in Pollutant-Induced Inflammatory Lung Responses.

Inhalation of traffic-related particulate matter (e.g., diesel exhaust particles [DEPs]) is associated with acute inflammatory responses in the lung, and it promotes the development and aggravation of allergic airway diseases. We previously demonstrated that exposure to DEP was associated with increased recruitment and maturation of monocytes and conventional dendritic cells (DCs), resulting in TH2 polarization. Monocytes and immature DCs express the G-protein coupled receptor chemR23, which binds the chemoattractant chemerin. Using chemR23 knockout (KO) and corresponding wild-type (WT) mice, …

Air Pollution and Exercise: A REVIEW OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR IMPLICATIONS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS.

Although regular aerobic exercise improves overall health, increased physical activity can lead to heightened exposures to a variety of air … ollutants into circulating blood, and augments oxidative stress and inflammation. The inhalation of particulate matter during exercise can raise blood pressure, impair vascular function, and unfavorably affect autonomic balance. Several studies suggest that air pollutants can increase ischemic symptoms and signs during exercise and can even be capable of impairing e …
