Amygdala response predicts clinical symptom reduction in patients with borderline personality disorder: A pilot fMRI study.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a prevalent, devastating, and heterogeneous psychiatric disorder. Treatment success is highly variable within this patient group. A cognitive neuroscientific approach to BPD might contribute to precision psychiatry by identifying neurocognitive factors that predict who will benefit from a specific treatment. Here, we build on observations that BPD is accompanied by the enhanced impact of the aversive effect on behavior and abnormal neural signaling in the amygdala. We assessed whether BPD is accompanied by abnormal aversive regulation of instrumental be…

The Pathogenesis of Borderline Personality Disorder: Evolution of Evidence and Treatment Implications for Two Prominent Models.

Since Stern first started his work in 1938, the field has recognized several empirically supported models of the etiology of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Two such models are the Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD and the Biosocial Development Model of BPD. The Tripartite Model of the Development of BPD suggests that it is a combination of a hyperbolic temperament, traumatic childhood experiences, and an event or series of events that trigger the onset of BPD. Whereas the Biosocial Development Model of BPD elaborates on the work of Linehan's Biosocial Theory. This model sugges…

Exploring the effect of group schema therapy and comorbidity on the treatment course of personality disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update of outcome studies of schema group therapy for personality disorders and the effect of comorbidity in order to explore whether schema group therapy might be effective for this patient group and what dosage is required. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies of short-term schema group therapy for personality disorders with or without comorbidity show moderately effective results but the majority of patients fail to achieve full remission from global psychological symptom distress. Preliminary findings revealed that those unremitted patients might benefit from 40 to 60…

Investigating predictors of treatment response in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for borderline personality disorder using LASSO regression.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for borderline personality disorder (BPD) have yielded heterogeneous findings on what factors differentiate individuals with or without sufficient treatment response, highlighting the need for further research. METHOD: We investigated a sample of 105 individuals with BPD receiving a 6-month course of DBT. Participants were categorized as sufficient or insufficient responders using clinical and statistical change indices (based on emotion dysregulation, BPD symptom severity, utilization of DBT skills, and functional impairment). So…

The association of personality polygenic risk score, psychosocial protective factors and suicide attempt in mood disorder.

Some personality traits, especially neuroticism, has been found to be associated with suicide attempt (SA) in mood disorder patients. The present study explored the association between personality traits and SA using polygenic risk scores (PRS) for personality among patients with mood disorders. We also investigated the effects of a variety of psychosocial variables on SA. Patients with bipolar disorder (BPD, N = 841) and major depressive disorder (MDD, N = 710) were recruited from hospitals in Taiwan. Lifetime SA and information on psychosocial factors was collected. We calculated the PRS of …

Beyond Big Five trait domains: Stability and change in personality facets across midlife and old age.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulated evidence indicates both stable and malleable parts of inter-individual differences in the broad Big Five domains. Less is known, however, about stability and change at the more diversified facet level. With the current study, we fill this gap by investigating personality stability and change across midlife and old age. METHOD: We apply local structural equation measurement models and second-order growth curve models to four waves of data obtained with the full NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) collected over 11 years from 1667 adults (Mage  = 62.69 years, SDage  = 15…

Who benefits from which activity? On the relations between personality traits, leisure activities, and well-being.

Leisure activities have been emphasized as an important predictor of well-being. However, little research has examined the effects of leisure activity enactment on well-being over time. Moreover, it is unknown which activities are most beneficial for whom. We integrate diverse theoretical accounts of person-environment relations and propose a generic Personality-Activity-Well-Being (PAW) framework, which highlights different relations between personality traits, activities, and well-being. To investigate these relations, we used 11 annual waves from the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the So…

Changes in mental health, wellbeing and personality following ayahuasca consumption: Results of a naturalistic longitudinal study.

Background: Naturalistic and placebo-controlled studies suggest ayahuasca, a potent psychedelic beverage originating from Indigenous Amazonian tradition, may improve mental health, alter personality structure, and reduce alcohol and drug intake. To better understand ayahuasca's therapeutic potential and to identify factors that influence therapeutic efficacy, we conducted a naturalistic, longitudinal study of facilitated ayahuasca consumption in naïve participants using a comprehensive battery of self-report questionnaires. Materials and Methods: Ayahuasca naive individuals registering for aya…

Effects of a brief compassion exercise on affect and emotion regulation in patients with personality disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cultivating compassion seems a promising strategy for ameliorating emotion dysregulation in patients with personality disorders (PDs). Thus far, empirical evidence is lacking. This study aimed to examine whether a brief compassion exercise compared to a neutral exercise would positively impact on (implicit) positive affect (PA) and (implicit) negative affect (NA) and foster the use of more adaptive emotion regulation strategies in an adult clinical sample with PDs. METHODS: A total of 24 patients admitted to a Dutch day-hospital treatment center for PDs participated…

Validating the German version of the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 Scale using nominal response models.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) features a new classification of personality disorders (PD), focusing on the severity of PD. Although there are numerous self-report measures that assess PD severity, to date only the Personality Disorder Severity-ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) is based on ICD-11's operationalization of PD. Initial results indicated that the PDS-ICD-11 measures a unidimensional construct, but the assumptions made for scoring its bipolar items had not been fully examined. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and investigate the latent structure of the German versi…

Impact of Impulsivity and Therapy Response in Eating Disorders from a Neurophysiological, Personality and Cognitive Perspective.

Impulsivity, as a multidimensional construct, has been linked to eating disorders (EDs) and may negatively impact treatment response. The study aimed to identify the dimensions of impulsivity predicting poor remission of ED symptoms. A total of 37 ED patients underwent a baseline assessment of impulsive personality traits and inhibitory control, including the Stroop task and the emotional go/no-go task with event-related potentials (ERPs) analysis. The remission of EDs symptomatology was evaluated after 3 months of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and at a 2-year follow-up. Poor remission af…

A comparative study of personality profile among violent and non-violent convicts: A cross sectional study.

The conviction-prone personality sees events as external forces and not according to their own or another's emotion, cognition, or inner forces. This study compared the personality traits and psychopathology of both violent and non-violent convicts. The total number of samples were 60 (30 violent and 30 non-violent) which were recruited from the Central jail of Jaipur (Rajasthan). A pro forma was used to collect sociodemographic variables. The 16-personality factor questionnaire was applied after receiving permission from the concerned authorities. Student t-test was applied to compare violent…

[Shame Proneness in Borderline Personality Disorder: Critical Reflection Based on Data from the Province of Quebec].

Objectives Shame is a painful feeling that one feels when under the impression of having committed an offence or contravened to a personal or moral standard. Shame experiences are often intense and entail a global, negative self-evaluation; persons then feel like they are bad, weak, worthless, or deserving others' contempt. Some people are more prone to shame feelings. Although shame is not listed as a diagnostic criterion of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in the DSM-5, studies suggest that shame is an important feature in individuals with BPD. The aim of this study is to garner additio…

A meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis of the global prevalence of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

There is a relative dearth of research on Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), even if it has been recognized for over 100 years. Thus, the present study aims to review the worldwide prevalence of OCPD in different populations. The search was conducted employing the PubMed database of the US National Library of Medicine and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) to detect available studies showing OCPD prevalence rates. All the prevalence rates were extracted and aggregated through random-effects models. Meta-regression and sensitivity analyses were performed. The final sample was comp…

Borderline personality features among individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P): A brief report.

AIM: This exploratory study reports on borderline symptomatology within a sample of individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) through a validated, self-report instrument, the short version of the Borderline Symptom List (BSL-23). METHODS: The sample consisted of 44 help-seeking CHR-P youth (ages 14-29 years) who completed an initial evaluation at a specialized clinic for psychosis-risk. RESULTS: The mean BSL-23 score was 1.5 (SD = 1.0, range 0.1-4.0). Higher scores were strongly associated with greater reported depressive symptoms (r = 0.84, p < 0.001). Additionally, borderline

The moderating effect of personality traits on acute tinnitus sensation in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: People may experience tinnitus after sudden hearing impairment. The details of the relationship between tinnitus improvement and hearing recovery are still unclear. Personality traits may play a role in the modulation of tinnitus sensation. We investigated the moderating effect of personality traits on pretreatment and posttreatment tinnitus sensation in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study enrolled 33 patients diagnosed with unilateral ISSHL and acute tinnitus in 2018-2019 at one institute. Clinical data …

Gender differences in psychiatric comorbidity and personality characteristics among adults seeking treatment for problematic internet use.

In the present study, we investigated gender differences in personality and psychiatric correlates among adults (N = 115) seeking treatment for problematic internet use (PIU) at a specialized clinic in São Paulo, Brazil. All participants were assessed at the beginning of their treatment for co-occurring psychiatric conditions, other addictive behaviors, and personality characteristics. Women (n = 20) were more likely to present with greater rates of psychiatric comorbidity compared to men (n = 95), including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stres…
