Assessment of club drug use in a treatment-seeking sample of individuals with marijuana dependence.

Club drug use is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and has been associated with chronic psychiatric symptoms and neuropsychological abnormalities. Patterns of club drug use and characteristics of club drug users are not homogeneous. Thus, treatment-seeking marijuana-dependent individuals may have a differential pattern of club drug use. Baseline assessments collected from 55 individuals participating in a pharmacological treatment study for marijuana dependence were examined. Individuals completed a 16-item self-report questionnaire assessing club drugs used, frequency and pat

The sensitivity and specificity of flashbacks and nightmares to trauma.

Traumatic events are commonly re-experienced by trauma survivors through nightmares and flashbacks. The current study examined the relative sensitivity and specificity of these two forms of re-experiencing trauma in female survivors of rape. The frequency of nightmares and flashbacks were assessed using the Nightmare Frequency Questionnaire (NFQ) and the Flashback Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), respectively. The FFQ was developed for this study and is designed to assess the frequency and occurrence of flashbacks in trauma survivors. The NFQ, FFQ and a variety of other measures were completed b

Depressive and anxiety symptoms, dysfunctional attitudes and social aspects in irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: Biopsychosocial models for both organic and functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have been described in the recent literature. The objective of this study was to give further data to this model by assessing stressful life events, social support, psychopathological symptoms, and dysfunctional attitudes in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and healthy subjects. METHOD: Age- and gender-matched IBS and IBD patients presenting at a tertiary care gastroenterological center completed self-reported questionnaires on stressful life events, social support

The longitudinal polymorphism of bipolar I disorders and its theoretical implications.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of bipolar I disorders is often characterized by a polymorphism, which means that different kinds of episodes develop during the illness. This study investigated the characteristics, similarities and differences of the long-term course of bipolar I patients regarding the dominance of various kinds of episodes. METHODS: One hundred eighty-two (182) patients with DSM-IV bipolar I disorder were longitudinally investigated (approximately 17 years duration of the illness) with standardized instruments. The dominance of mood, schizo-affective and schizophreniform

A randomized controlled trial of cognitive therapy for bipolar disorder: focus on long-term change.

BACKGROUND: This study reports the outcome of a randomized controlled trial of cognitive therapy (CT) for bipolar disorder. The treatment protocol differed from other published forms of CT for bipolar disorder through the addition of emotive techniques. METHOD: Fifty-two patients with DSM-IV bipolar I or II disorder were randomly allocated to a 6-month trial of either CT or treatment as usual, with both treatment groups also receiving mood stabilizers. Outcome measures included relapse rates, dysfunctional attitudes, psychosocial functioning, hopelessness, self-control, and medication adheren

Estimated prevalence of compulsive buying behavior in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Compulsive buying (uncontrolled urges to buy, with resulting significant adverse consequences) has been estimated to affect from 1.8% to 16% of the adult U.S. population. To the authors' knowledge, no study has used a large general population sample to estimate its prevalence. METHOD: The authors conducted a random sample, national household telephone survey in the spring and summer of 2004 and interviewed 2,513 adults. The interviews addressed buying attitudes and behaviors, their consequences, and the respondents' financial and demographic data. The authors used a clinically vali

The Nicotine Dependence Syndrome Scale in Finnish smokers.

The Nicotine Dependence Syndrome Scale (NDSS) is a new multidimensional measure of nicotine dependence. The study aim was to examine the structure and heritability of the NDSS and its associations with nicotine dependence defined by FTND and DSM-IV criteria among Finnish smokers participating in an ongoing twin-family study. Adult twin pairs concordant for smoking from the Finnish Twin Cohort Study, and their siblings and parents were interviewed. Among 1370 smokers, the sum score of the NDSS (a summary measure of dependence) correlated moderately highly with FTND score (r=0.62). Subjects in t

Depression in methadone maintenance treatment patients: rate and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Depression is widely prevalent among former heroin addicts in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). The risk factors for depression among MMT patients that have not been well characterized, was studied. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study (January, 2004-August, 2005), 90 MMT patients were evaluated for depression by the 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (21-HAM-D) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating scale (BPRS). To study possible induction of depression by drug abuse, urine samples tested for opiates, cocaine metabolite (benzoylecgonine), benzodiazepines (BDZ), cannabis

Urban stress and health in developing countries: development and validation of a neighborhood stress index for India.

Stress caused by chronic difficulties encountered by people residing in poor urban neighborhoods is associated with health problems and disease in developed countries, but the relationship between neighborhood stress and health in developing nations, such as India, has not been assessed. In this study, the authors administered the City Stress Inventory, a self-report measure assessing stress experienced as a function of environmental conditions unique to living in large cities that was validated in the United States, to 163 high school students in New Delhi, India. Components of urban stress i

Temperament and risky behaviors: a pathway to HIV?

BACKGROUND: Certain sexual behaviors and abuse of substances contribute to the risk of becoming HIV-infected. Because dispositional characteristics are likely to influence this process, we examined the association between temperament and HIV serostatus in subjects with heavy use of drugs and various sexual risk behaviors. METHODS: Two hundred and thirty individuals (81% of whom were HIV-infected) were assessed for underlying temperamental characteristics, substance use, and risky sexual behaviors. Toward this goal, a factor analysis was conducted on a new self-rated Temperament Autoquestionna

Childhood sexual abuse and psychosomatic symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms without a demonstrable physical cause. In a subgroup of patients, irritable bowel syndrome may be part of a cluster of psychosomatic symptoms related to childhood sexual abuse. To investigate this possibility, the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) were administered to 105 subjects with either irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), or other gastrointestinal disorders. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in patients with traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic stressors such as war, rape, or life-threatening accidents can result in a debilitating psychopathological development conceptualised as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Pathological memory formation during an alarm response may set the precondition for PTSD to occur. If true, a lack of memory formation by extended unconsciousness in the course of the traumatic experience should preclude PTSD. METHODS: 46 patients from a neurological rehabilitation clinic were examined by means of questionnaires and structured clinical interviews. All patients had suffered a

Anxious and depressive disorders and their comorbidity: effect on central nervous system noradrenergic function.

BACKGROUND: Although comorbidity of anxiety with depression is common, investigations of physiologic abnormalities related specifically to comorbidity are rare. This study examined relationships of DSM-IV-defined depression, anxiety, and their comorbidity to noradrenergic function measured by blunting of the growth hormone (GH) response to the alpha2 adrenoreceptor agonist (and imidazoline receptor agent) clonidine and by blood pressure and symptom responses. METHODS: Fifteen subjects with pure social anxiety or panic disorder, 15 with pure major depression, and 18 with both depression and an

OBJECTIVE: Intervening in depression and/or low perceived social support within 28 days after myocardial infarction (MI) in the Enhancing Recovery in Coronary Heart Disease (ENRICHD) clinical trial did not increase event-free survival. The purpose of the present investigation was to conduct post hoc analyses on sex and ethnic minority subgroups to assess whether any treatment subgroup is at reduced or increased risk of greater morbidity/mortality. METHODS: The 2481 patients with MI (973 white men, 424 minority men, 674 white women, 410 minority women) who had major or minor depression and/or

Response inhibition in adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder during childhood: an event-related FMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Frontostriatal neural abnormalities have been implicated in the response inhibition impairments that are characteristic of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, reports of such abnormalities in adolescents are inconsistent. The present study used behavioral and functional neuroimaging techniques to examine inhibitory control processes in adolescents who had been diagnosed with ADHD during childhood. METHOD: The authors used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during performance of a Go/No-Go task to scan 10 male adolescents who were diagnosed with DSM-I
