Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the intraoral minor salivary gland: A case report.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of salivary gland origin is a rare malignant tumor with morphological characteristics identical to those of undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It has a marked racial predilection for Inuit and Southeast Asian populations. An association between LEC and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has previously been reported. LEC most frequently affects the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular glands. To the best of our knowledge, only three LECs arising from the minor salivary gland have been previously described in the English language literature. The c

Evolutionary genetics of malaria.

Many standard-textbook population-genetic results apply to a wide range of species. Sometimes, however, population-genetic models and principles need to be tailored to a particular species. This is particularly true for malaria, which next to tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS ranks among the economically most relevant infectious diseases. Importantly, malaria is not one disease-five human-pathogenic species of Plasmodium exist. P. falciparum is not only the most severe form of human malaria, but it also causes the majority of infections. The second most relevant species, P. vivax, is already considere

Influence of the environment on the characteristics of asthma.

Few studies have compared the prevalence of asthma in urban and rural settings or explored the issue of whether these two manifestations of the disease may represent different phenotypes. The aim of this study was: (a) to establish whether the prevalence of asthma differs between rural and urban settings, and b) to identify differences in the clinical presentation of asthma in these two environments. Descriptive epidemiological study involving individuals aged 18 or over from a rural (n = 516) and an urban population (n = 522). In the first phase, individuals were contacted by letter in order

Tinnitus prevalence in New Zealand.

AIM: There is a lack of consensus in the international literature pertaining to the prevalence of tinnitus for the overall population, as well as sex and age sub-groups, suggesting the need for country-specific prevalence estimates. We aim to find prevalence estimates of tinnitus that are representative of the New Zealand population. METHOD: We obtained data from random-digit dialled telephone surveys of households, conducted by Roy Morgan Research Limited between August, 2007, and July, 2013, for people aged ≥ 14 years in New Zealand (n=69,976). As part of the survey, participants were asked

Association of the nutritional metabolic risk index with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in a sub-plateau population.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is closely associated with metabolic, anthropometric, and nutritional characteristics. The Nutritional Metabolic Risk Index (NMRI) integrates these dimensions, but its association with MASLD remains unclear. We evaluated the association of the NMRI with prevalent MASLD and its discriminative performance in a sub-plateau population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,551 adults undergoing health examinations at approximately 1,900 m. K-means clustering was used to identify metabolic-nutritional profiles. A

Incidence and prevalence of acquired brain injury in children and young people globally: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired brain injury refers to any injury or damage to the brain post-birth. It is considered a silent epidemic due to late or missed diagnosis, despite continued interaction with healthcare and longer-term impacts. There is a paucity of robust contemporary evidence that quantifies the population burden of childhood acquired brain injuries. This study aims to estimate the global burden of childhood acquired brain injury by pooling estimates of incidence and prevalence overall, by subtype, and by severity. We will assess variation by time, sociodemographic and clinical characteri

Evolution of outdoor sports during the COVID-19 post-lockdown in Spain: a nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Measures implemented to control the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic influenced physical activity, including participation in sports. However, how long this impact persisted after lifting restrictions has not been well documented. Our purpose was to compare prevalence of outdoor sports in Spain right after the strict lockdown at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which did not allow people to leave their homes to exercise, and during the new normal. METHODS: Nationwide population-based study in Spain (ENE-COVID). Participants were selected through two-stage stratified rand

Turret truck-related head and neck injuries in a Japanese wholesale market: Clinical characteristics, risk factors, and the need for preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Turret trucks are widely used to handle cargo in Japanese wholesale markets. Under Japanese law, helmet use is not mandatory for turret truck operators, which potentially increases the risk of head and neck injuries. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of turret truck-related head and neck injuries as the first reported analysis of this injury mechanism. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients with turret truck-related head and neck injuries who were transported to St. Luke's International Hospital bet

A distinct Frequency of Endometrial Stem/Progenitor Cells (EnSCs) in the Ectopic and Eutopic Endometrium of Women with Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic estrogen-dependent disorder characterised by the growth of endometrial-like tissues outside the uterus. Recent data suggest a potential role for endometrial stem/progenitor cells in the development of endometriosis. However, evidence on the frequency of various stem cell populations in ectopic lesions and their paired eutopic counterparts remains limited. Hence, this study assessed the frequencies of endometrial stem cells and their characteristics in eutopic and ectopic endometria of women with endometriosis, and also probed whether these attributes differ in women

Effects of Primary Healthcare Quality and Effectiveness on Hospitalization Indicators in Brazil.

Advances in primary healthcare coverage for the improvement in health outcomes at the population level comprise a major goal of public policies of health, particularly considering increases in hospitalization costs linked to chronic diseases in recent decades. Previous evidence shows the positive effects of access to primary healthcare on hospitalization indicators in high-income countries; however, there is a lack of literature on the subject in Latin American countries. Thus, the present study proposes a quantitative investigation on connections between primary healthcare quality and effecti

Long-Term Mortality of Patients With Head Injuries-A 10-Year Follow-up Study With Population Controls Study Performed at Tampere University Hospital.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Increased mortality in the acute phase after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is well established, and there is good evidence suggesting increased long-term mortality as well. Although the reasons for increased acute phase mortality are mostly intuitive, factors associated with long-term mortality are not well understood. The objective of this study was to compare survival and causes of deaths among patients with head injuries and matched population controls. METHODS: Ten-year survival and causes of deaths were compared between a cohort of consecutive patients with trau
