Women, pharmacy and the World Wide Web: could they be the answer to the obesity epidemic?

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this article is to explore how giving women access to evidence-based information in weight management through pharmacies, and by utilising the World Wide Web, is a much needed step towards dealing with the obesity crisis. KEY FINDINGS: Women's needs should be considered when developing evidence-based information on weight. Excess weight places them at high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, infertility and complications following pregnancy and giving birth. Women are also an important population group because they influence decision-making around meal ch

Functional Outcomes in Elderly Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome: Conservative Versus Invasive Management.

INTRODUCTION: In developing countries, cardiovascular disease is a major health burden, and there has been a rapid increase in the incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the elderly population. Despite this, there are only limited studies or data available regarding the outcomes of ACS in elderly patients. Hence, this study focused on the management of ACS in the elderly treated conservatively and invasively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Kerala, India, involving 64 geriatric patients (aged 60 years and above) newly diagnosed

Mind over matter: psychological insights for effective weight reduction through exercise in university students.

This comprehensive review article examines the multifaceted psychological dimensions that underpin effective weight reduction through exercise among university students, a demographic uniquely vulnerable to weight gain and sedentary lifestyles during a critical transitional life period. Adopting a structured narrative (integrative) review approach and drawing on peer-reviewed literature identified through structured searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC (2000-2025), with emphasis on studies recently published, the present review explores how psychological constructs in

Integrating Conventional and Emerging Approaches in Cardiovascular Risk Assessment and Management.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of global mortality, and the burden is rising fastest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Conventional risk calculators, such as Framingham and Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE), incorporate age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and smoking, yet they underperform in populations that differ from their derivation cohorts and leave substantial residual risk unexplained. This narrative review evaluates traditional risk factors alongside emerging tools, including coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, polygenic risk sco

Optimization of spine surgery outcomes in patients with osteoporosis: a comprehensive narrative review.

Osteoporosis has emerged as a major challenge in spine surgery amid the rapid aging of the global population. Diminished bone quality significantly heightens the risk of postoperative mechanical complications following spinal instrumentation, including screw loosening, proximal junctional kyphosis and failure, cage subsidence, pseudoarthrosis, and loss of surgical correction. These complications often result in poorer clinical outcomes, higher healthcare expenditures, and an increased need for revision surgery. Comprehensive preoperative assessment of bone health represents the initial step in

An Embedded Model of Care to Address Depression in the In-Home Aged Care Setting.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is increasingly common among older Australians receiving home care, yet symptoms are often under-recognised and access to evidence-based psychological treatment remains limited. This paper introduces EMBED, a new model of care designed to improve detection, escalation and management of depression within routine home care service delivery. METHODS: We describe the development of an evidence-informed model of care for the Australian home care setting. The model draws on clinical guidelines, published evidence on late-life depression and psychological treatment, implementat

Use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in integrated care for people with disabilities: A scoping review using the SELFIE framework.

BACKGROUND: Integrated care addresses system fragmentation, especially for people with disabilities who require support across multiple domains. Most models focus on healthcare, overlooking social and environmental factors that hinder health management for people with disabilities. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)'s biopsychosocial approach integrates these broader factors, but its application in integrated care remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to explore the application of the ICF in research on integrated care, informed

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Supportive and Palliative Care in Pancreatic Cancer Management: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is a challenging malignancy with an aggressive biology and limited treatment options, contributing to low survival rates. Supportive and palliative care play a key role in improving the quality of life and psychological distress for patients and their families. However, appropriate delivery and effectiveness of these interventions may be influenced by social determinants of health (SDOH). These factors create significant barriers for patients, influencing their access to care and ability to make informed decisions. This review explores the role of SDOH in supporti

Risk Factors and Consequences of Cutaneous Allodynia among Individuals with Migraine: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cutaneous allodynia is a frequent complaint among individuals with migraine and serves as a critical marker of central sensitization, which plays a pivotal role in migraine pathophysiology. This can exacerbate migraine severity and diminish quality of life. Understanding the risk factors associated with cutaneous allodynia is essential, as it can help identify individuals at higher risk of developing this condition and guide early intervention strategies. Identifying its consequences provides critical insights into disease progression, treatment response, and disability. Hen

Beyond the Surface: Nutritional Interventions Integrated with Diagnostic Imaging Tools to Target and Preserve Cartilage Integrity: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review provides an overview of the various diagnostic tools used to assess cartilage health, with a focus on early detection, nutrition intervention, and management of osteoarthritis. Early detection of cartilage damage is crucial for effective patient management. Traditional diagnostic tools like radiography and conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences are more suited to detecting late-stage structural changes. This paper highlights advanced imaging techniques, including sodium MRI, T2 mapping, T1ρ imaging, and delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage, which

Genotyping of benzimidazole resistance using β-tubulin isotype 1 marker in Haemonchus contortus of sheep and goats in Paraná, Southern Brazil.

Haemonchus contortus is one of the most pathogenic gastrointestinal parasites that infect small ruminants. The indiscriminate use of anthelmintics (i.e., benzimidazole class, BZ) to control infections has led to the reduction of drug efficacy in H. contortus populations worldwide. Resistance to BZ is associated with high frequencies of single nucleotide polymorphisms at F200Y, F167Y, and E198A positions of the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene. This study aimed to determine the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with BZ resistance in H. contortus from 18 farms (545 sheep and 124 go

Precision medicine: Concept and tools.

Precision medicine is the new age medicine and refers to tailoring treatments to a subpopulation who have a common susceptibility to a particular disease or similar response to a particular drug. Although the concept existed even during the times of Sir William Osler, it was given a shot in the arm with the Precision Medicine Initiative launched by Barack Obama in 2015. The main tools of precision medicine are Big data, artificial intelligence, the various omics, pharmaco-omics, environmental and social factors and the integration of these with preventive and population medicine. Big data can

How do I follow patients with early breast cancer after completing adjuvant therapy.

With improvements in the detection and treatment of breast cancer, more women are surviving after diagnosis. Patients who complete adjuvant therapy require ongoing follow-up to manage toxicities, to detect recurrences early, and to provide ongoing physical and psychosocial support. Routine surveillance should be implemented, with attention to educating patients about symptoms of recurrence, such as weight loss, cough, and bone pain. An intensive surveillance strategy with the routine use of laboratory and radiographic studies does not improve outcomes and raises the cost of follow-up. Patients
