Anesthetic management for intraoperative acute pulmonary embolism during inferior vena cava tumor thrombus surgery: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition, even with early detection and prompt management. Intraoperative APE required specific ways for detecting since classic symptoms of APE in the awake patient could not be observed or self-reported by the patient under general anesthesia. CASE SUMMARY: A 44-year-old man with a history of hepatic cell carcinoma was admitted for radical nephrectomy and tumor thrombectomy due to a newly found kidney tumor with inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombus. APE that occurred during tumor thrombectomy with hype

A case report of epiploic appendagitis as a mimic of acute cholecystitis.

INTRODUCTION: Epiploic appendagitis is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. It's presentation often mimics other causes of acute abdominal pain. It is important for clinicians to be aware of an epiploic appendagitis since a delay in diagnosis can lead to unnecessary hospital stay, antibiotic usage and surgical intervention [1-4]). We present a case of epiploic appendagitis mimicking acute cholecystitis in a rural community hospital. CASE REPORT: A 54 Caucasian male self-presents to the emergency department on a Saturday with severe right upper quadrant pain. He was initially diagnosed as acu

A family-centered intervention for the transition to living with multiple myeloma as a chronic illness: A pilot study.

Patients with multiple myeloma and their family caregivers must master self-management tasks related not only to the disease and treatment, but also associated with transitioning to living with chronic illness. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, safety, and fidelity of an intervention that had a psychoeducational approach and included a low-impact, home-based walking activity. A secondary aim was to obtain preliminary data of the effect of the intervention, as compared to an attention control group, on anxiety, activation for self-management, fatigue, depressio…

Family caregivers of elderly patients with cancer: understanding and minimizing the burden of care.

Family caregivers play an essential role, usually unpaid, in caring for patients with cancer. Most older patients with cancer are cared for by a family member, who may not be prepared for the challenges. The needs of older patients are diverse and may include assistance with medication, transportation for treatment, activities of daily living, and emotional support. The activities that caregivers find most stressful include helping patients with their self-care, managing their treatment and symptoms, and dealing with the suffering of a family member. Families may be affected by other stressors

Mini-SPIN: A brief screening assessment for generalized social anxiety disorder.

The objectives of this study are to develop a brief self-rated screening instrument for generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD) and to test the efficiency of the instrument. The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), a 17-item self-administered scale for GSAD, was given to 263 individuals with GSAD and controls. A subset of three items yielding high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of GSAD was identified. This abbreviated version of the SPIN (Mini-SPIN) was administered to a group of managed care patients in conjunction with an epidemiological study of GSAD. Patients (n = 7,165) were

Existing 'In-Between': A Qualitative Exploration of Individual, Interpersonal and Structural Influences on Empowerment Among Young Adults With Chronic Health Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Empowerment is a multifaceted construct conceptualised in different ways across the literature. Traditionally individual in its orientation, patient empowerment has more recently been acknowledged as also encompassing interpersonal and structural elements. As young adults with chronic health conditions enter the developmental stage of 'emerging adulthood' and transition from paediatric to adult care, empowerment may play a key role in supporting health management. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore what empowerment means to young adults, and the facilitators and barriers that

Measuring individual and community capacity factors in people with multimorbidity and exploring associations with health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: People with multimorbidity work to manage their conditions (burden of treatment). Burden of Treatment Theory (BOTT) proposes poorer outcomes when this work outweighs capacity - an individual's ability to successfully undertake the work of self-management. Capacity is influenced by individual and community factors. This study aims to quantify individual and community capacity factors and explore associations, if any, with mortality and hospitalisation in people with multimorbidity. METHODS: Data source is as follows: West of Scotland Twenty-07 cohort (three age-based cohorts - 15, …

Emergence of Voronoi-Patterned Cellular Membranes via Confinement Transformation of Self-Assembled Metal-Organic Frameworks.

The self-assembly of nanoparticles allows the fabrication of complex, nature-inspired architectures. Among these, Voronoi tessellations─intricate patterns found in many natural systems such as insect wings and plant tissues─have broad implications across materials science, biology, and geography. However, replicating these irregular yet organized features at the nanoscale through nanoparticle self-assembly remains challenging. Here, we introduce a confinement transformation method to generate two-dimensional (2D) Voronoi patterns by converting metal-organic frameworks, specifically zeolitic im
