Parental Mental Illness and the Likelihood of Child Out-of-Home Care: A Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To detail the relationship between parental mental illness and the likelihood of out-of-home care (OHC) among their children, and to identify factors which modify this relationship. METHODS: Using Swedish national registers, children born in 2000 to 2011 (n = 1 249 463) were linked to their parents. Time-dependent parental mental illness (nonaffective and affective psychosis, substance misuse, depression, anxiety and stress, eating disorders, personality disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and intellectual disability), was identified through International

Socioeconomic and demographic factors predictive of same day access utilization in outpatient radiation oncology.

PURPOSE: Access to medical care extends to not only the timely and appropriate receipt of services but also addresses inclusivity and underlying determinants of health. Given that patients from disadvantaged backgrounds have been shown to be more likely to experience delays in care, a same day access scheduling initiative was proposed to address this equity issue. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate our experience, focusing on identifying socioeconomic and demographic patterns of same day access utilization. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: From March 2021 to January 2023, all patients referre

Risk and Protective Factors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) has emerged as a critical child protection and public health concern in recent years. While the phenomenon is prevalent globally, its impact is compounded in sub-Saharan Africa owing to the cultural and socioeconomic challenges that leave many households in the region vulnerable. The present study synthesized existing evidence using the socioecological model as a guiding framework to assess the risk and protective factors associated with CSEC in sub-Saharan Africa. A protocol for the study was published in PROSPERO (CRD42022331832) with pre-spe

Psychological Health and Ischemic Heart Disease in Women: A Review of Current Evidence and Clinical Considerations across the Healthspan.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological health encompasses a constellation of negative and positive factors-i.e., psychosocial stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness and social isolation, anger and hostility, optimism, and a sense of purpose. This narrative review presents current evidence at the intersection of psychological health, risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD), and IHD-related outcomes, with an emphasis on associations in women. RECENT FINDINGS: For women, relations between psychological health and IHD reflect important sex and gender differences in biological and psychosocial fac

Snow White's tale in nephrology: the emerging threat of skin-whitening creams on kidney health.

The timeless tale of Snow White, with its emphasis on fair skin as a beauty ideal, mirrors a contemporary issue in nephrology: the harmful impact of skin-whitening creams on kidney health. Fairness creams have deeply embedded themselves in global society, driven by a pervasive obsession with lighter skin tones as a symbol of beauty. This widespread use reflects deeply rooted cultural beliefs and social norms, despite the significant health risks associated with these products. Despite regulatory bans, these creams often contain hazardous substances such as hydroquinone, mercury, and arsenic, p

Association of COVID-19 vaccination and anxiety symptoms: A Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN) Cohort longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Symptoms of anxiety increased early in the COVID-19 pandemic among people with systemic sclerosis (SSc) then returned to pre-pandemic levels, but this was an aggregate finding and did not evaluate whether vaccination may have contributed to reduced anxiety symptom levels. We investigated whether being vaccinated for COVID-19 was associated with reduced anxiety symptoms among people with SSc. METHODS: The longitudinal Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN) COVID-19 Cohort was launched in April 2020 and included participants from the ongoing SPIN Cohort and external

Provider-Reported Barriers in Sexual Health Care Services for Women With Upstream Barriers: The Case of Syphilis and Congenital Syphilis in Southern Colorado, 2022.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis and congenital syphilis rates have increased sharply in Colorado in the past 5 years. Congenital syphilis is passed during pregnancy in utero and can cause lifelong physical, developmental, and neurologic problems for the child, or can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Congenital syphilis is easily prevented if the mother receives timely testing, treatment, and prenatal care. Providers can play a key role in preventing congenital syphilis for women with social vulnerabilities, who have a higher likelihood of syphilis and/or congenital syphilis infecti

Determinants of intimate partner controlling behavior targeting women in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intimate partner controlling behavior toward women is an important form of intimate partner violence (IPV), both in terms of limiting women's daily lives and in terms of reproducing patriarchal culture and male dominance in societies at the micro level. A limited number of studies in the literature have identified the male intimate partner's controlling behavior as a dependent variable, which is important for understanding the determinants of this type of IPV. There is also a significant gap in the literature in terms of studies focusing on the case of Türkiye. Thus, the main a

Longitudinal survey of UK veterans with pre-existing mental health difficulties: mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals with pre-existing mental health difficulties were thought to be vulnerable to mental health deterioration due to the emerging threat and the actions taken to control infection rates. Yet, there remained a paucity of research investigating changes in veteran well-being, a population facing higher rates of mental health difficulties compared with the general public. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the mental health and well-being of UK veterans with pre-existing mental health difficulties at two time points during the

Analysing patient-generated data to understand behaviours and characteristics of women with epilepsy of childbearing years: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women with epilepsy (WWE) are vulnerable in pregnancy, with increased risks to mother and baby including teratogenic risks, especially from valproate. The free EpSMon mobile-phone app allows self-monitoring to afford patient-centred feedback on seizure related risks, such as sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP) to its users. We sought to generate insights into various seizure related risks and its treatments in WWE of childbearing age (16 to 60 years ) using EpSMon. METHODS: The study utilizes a prospective real-world cohort of 5.5 years. Patient reported data on demographics, medicat

Misuse of Pregabalin: a qualitative study from a patient's perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The misuse of Pregabalin has been the subject of growing concern for several years. The effects sought are multiple and it is rarely taken as a single drug. It is most frequently used together with opioids, which may increase the risk of fatal overdose. In response to this emerging phenomenon, we seek to better understand the situation of misuse in Belgium and identify the people involved in it. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 20 participants who misuse Pregabalin was conducted throughout the French-speaking region of Belgium between August

Assessing Educational and Attitudinal Outcomes of a Student Learner Experience Focused on Homelessness.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patient navigation programs help guide vulnerable populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, through the health care system. Medical students developed the student-run Patient Navigator Program (PNP) to serve persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the Dallas area. The objective of this study was to build on previously published data to determine how medical student attitudes, knowledge, and confidence working with PEH changed during involvement in the PNP, particularly after participating as a patient navigator. METHODS: Student fellows completed a su

Provider perceptions of challenges and facilitators to surgical care in unhoused patients: A qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Unhoused patients have worse surgical outcomes than the general population. However, the drivers of this inequity have not been studied. METHODS: We conducted 26 semi-structured interviews of clinicians who care for patients with surgical disease, using a purposive sampling strategy to intentionally recruit participants with significant experience caring for unhoused patients across different roles. We used thematic analysis to analyze the resulting data. RESULTS: We conducted 26 interviews: 11 with surgeons (42%), 8 with internal medicine physicians (30%), 2 with surgical advanc

Deep phenotypic analysis of psychiatric features in genetically defined cohorts: application to XYY syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent gene dosage disorders impart substantial risk for psychopathology. Yet, understanding that risk is hampered by complex presentations that challenge classical diagnostic systems. Here, we present a suite of generalizable analytic approaches for parsing this clinical complexity, which we illustrate through application to XYY syndrome. METHOD: We gathered high-dimensional measures of psychopathology in 64 XYY individuals and 60 XY controls, plus additional interviewer-based diagnostic data in the XYY group. We provide the first comprehensive diagnostic description of psychi
