Coal fly ash application as an eco-friendly approach for modulating the growth, yield, and biochemical constituents of Withania somnifera L. plants.

The solid waste known as fly ash, which is produced when coal is burned in thermal power plants, is sustainably used in agriculture. It is an excellent soil supplement for plant growth and development since it contains some desired nutrients (macro and micro), as well as being porous. The present study was done to evaluate the effect of different fly ash levels on Withania somnifera. The present study aimed to assess the impact of various fly ash (FA) concentrations on growth, yield, photosynthetic pigments, biochemical parameters, and cell viability of W. somnifera. The results showed that FA

Phytoavailability of cadmium in rice amended with organic materials and lime: Effects of rhizosphere chemical changes and cadmium sequestration in iron plaque.

Excessive Cd in rice grains produced with acidic paddy soil is receiving increasingly widespread attention because it endangers human health. Applying organic materials (OM) and lime (L) is a common technique used to reduce Cd concentration in grains (CdG). Nevertheless, the mechanism by which their simultaneous application affects the Cd phytoavailability in soilrice systems remains ambiguous. In the current study, we adopted a rhizobag pot culture test to explore the influences of single application of OM [rice straw (RS), milk vetch (MV)], L, and their co-utilization on Cd phytoavailability

Characteristics and phytotoxicity of hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Effects of feedstock type and hydrothermal temperature.

The dissolved organic matter (DOM) with high mobility and reactivity plays a crucial role in soil. In this study, the characteristics and phytotoxicity of DOM released from the hydrochars prepared from different feedstocks (cow manure, corn stalk and Myriophyllum aquaticum) under three hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperatures (180, 200 and 220°C) were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrochars had high dissolved organic carbon content (20.15 to 37.65 mg/g) and its content showed a gradual reduction as HTC temperature increased. Three fluorescent components including mixed substance

Effectiveness and mechanism for the simultaneous adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and As(III) by animal-derived biochar/ferrihydrite composite.

The emerging animal-derived biochar (AB) has shown potential for mitigating the contamination of cationic heavy metals, but has no affinity to oxyanionic metals. In this study, we developed an AB/ferrihydrite composite with a AB/Fe mass ratio of 4.0 (ABF-4) for the simultaneous adsorption of cationic Pb(II)/Cd(II) and anionic As(III). ABF-4 is a type of hydroxyapatite-rich biochar coated with nanoscale iron hydroxide aggregates. The adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and As(III) on ABF-4 were 2.64, 1.55, and 0.48 mmol/g, and were 135%, 150%, and 4500% higher than those of pure AB, respectively. The

Simultaneous mitigation of arsenic and cadmium accumulation in rice grains by foliar inhibitor with ZIF-8@Ge-132.

Simultaneous mitigation of Arsenic (As) and Cadmium (Cd) in rice grains is hardly achieved with conventional soil treatments due to their opposite chemical behaviors in paddy soils. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a novel foliar inhibitor with germanium (Ge) -modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8@Ge-132) in cooperative mitigation of As and Cd in rice grains in a As and Cd co-contaminated paddy field, and the effecting mechanisms are elucidated by a series of advanced techniques. The results showed that the grains inorganic As and Cd was remarkably decreased by 45 % and 66 %

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi conducting the hyphosphere bacterial orchestra.

More than two-thirds of terrestrial plants acquire nutrients by forming a symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. AM fungal hyphae recruit distinct microbes into their hyphosphere, the narrow region of soil influenced by hyphal exudates. They thereby shape this so-called second genome of AM fungi, which significantly contributes to nutrient mobilization and turnover. We summarize current insights into characteristics of the hyphosphere microbiome and the role of hyphal exudates on orchestrating its composition. The hyphal exudates not only contain carbon-rich compounds but also promo

Novel pathway of acephate degradation by the microbial consortium ZQ01 and its potential for environmental bioremediation.

The microbial degradation of acephate in pure cultures has been thoroughly explored, but synergistic metabolism at the community level has rarely been investigated. Here, we report a novel microbial consortium, ZQ01, capable of effectively degrading acephate and its toxic product methamidophos, which can use acephate as a source of carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen. The degradation conditions with consortium ZQ01 were optimized using response surface methodology at a temperature of 34.1 °C, a pH of 8.9, and an inoculum size of 2.4 × 108 CFU·mL-1, with 89.5% of 200 mg L-1 acephate degradation obs

Potential neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and carcinogenicity induced by metribuzin and tebuconazole exposure in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) revealed by transcriptome analysis.

Metribuzin and tebuconazole have been widely used in agriculture for several decades. Apart from endocrine disruption, little is known about their toxicological effects on organisms without thyroid organs, at the transcriptional level. To explore this toxicity, model earthworm species Eisenia fetida, hatched from the same cocoon and cultured under identical environmental conditions, were independently exposed to the two chemicals at non-lethal concentrations in OECD artificial soil for 48 h after exposure. RNA-seq technology was used to analyze and compare the gene expression profiles of earth

The role of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in sequestering phosphorus compounds and trace elements: Speciation and dynamics.

In southern Florida, the sequestering of nutrients through the cultivation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in alternation with sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) crops is an essential step in minimizing downstream eutrophication of the Florida Everglades. Phosphorus (P) is known to be the leading cause of this eutrophication; however, the cultivation/harvesting of rice effectively reduces P and additional macro and micro-nutrients from agrarian soil and runoff through plant uptake. In this study, soil, water, sugarcane, and rice plants at two different stages (flooded and vegetative) were analyzed for twelv

Chemical Speciation and Distribution of Cadmium in Rice Grain and Implications for Bioavailability to Humans.

Consumption of rice (Oryza sativa) is the major dietary source of cadmium (Cd) for populations with rice as the staple. Little is known about the distribution and chemical speciation of Cd in rice grain, which is critical in determining the bioavailability of Cd to humans. We used synchrotron-based techniques for analyses of the speciation and distribution of Cd in rice grain. The majority of the Cd in rice grain was present as Cd-thiolate complexes (66-92%), likely in the form of Cd bound with thiol-rich proteins. The remainder was present as Cd-carboxyl compounds and Cd-histidine. Elemental

Influences of high-level atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury on methylmercury accumulation in maize (Zea mays L.).

Maize (Zea mays L.) leaves play an important role in stomatal uptake and surface adsorption of atmospheric mercury (Hg). However, the influence of atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in maize plants is poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a field open-top chambers (OTCs) experiment and a soil Hg-enriched experiment to investigate the response of MeHg accumulation in maize tissues to different GEM levels in the air. Maize upper leaves had a higher average MeHg concentration (0.21 ± 0.08 ng g-1) than bottom leaves (0.15 ± 0.05 ng g-1) in the

Trichloroethylene inhibits nitrogen transformation and microbial community structure in Mollisol.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is the most ubiquitous halogenated organic pollutant in the environment, it is one of the 129 priority control pollutants. In order to clarify the influence of TCE on microorganisms and nitrogen transformation in Mollisol is the core purpose of this study. Results showed that 10 mg kg-1 TCE is the concentration limit of ammonification in Mollisol. When the concentration of TCE reached 10 mg kg-1 and the effect lasted for over 7 days, the process of ammonia oxidation to nitric acid in Mollisol will be affected. TCE affected the process of nitrate (NO3-) transformation in

Dimethylmercury in Floodwaters of Mercury Contaminated Rice Paddies.

Dimethyl mercury (CH3HgCH3, DMeHg) has been observed in upwelling marine environments and the deep ocean. However, little is known about the occurrence and mechanisms of DMeHg formation in freshwater environments. In this study, concentrations of dissolved gaseous DMeHg were investigated in floodwaters of rice paddies in China that have been contaminated by mercury from mining. Values of DMeHg in rice paddies were compared with measurements from nearshore surface seawater in the Bohai Gulf. High concentrations of dissolved gaseous DMeHg occurred in rice paddies. Average DMeHg concentration was

Water managements limit heavy metal accumulation in rice: Dual effects of iron-plaque formation and microbial communities.

Understanding the mechanisms on how water management can minimize the concentrations of heavy metals in rice grains is important. Two water managements were concerned in our studies, including continuously flooding and alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Compared to AWD, a continuously flooded culture reduces the concentration of cadmium and other metals in the rice grains by reducing the root-to-shoot translocation and the availability of metals in rhizosphere. In a flooded environment, the rice rhizosphere was characterized by an increased soil pH, reduced fluorescein diacetate (FDA) activit

Saltwater intrusion history shapes the response of bacterial communities upon rehydration.

Saltwater intrusion (SWI) can result in the loss of dominant vegetation from freshwater habitats. In northern Australia, sea level is predicted to rise 17-50 cm by 2030-2070. This will exacerbate the impact of SWI, threatening Ramsar-listed habitats. Soil bacteria in these habitats play a significant role in biogeochemical cycling, regulating availability of essential nutrients such as nitrogen to vegetation. However, there is limited understanding as to how SWI will impact these soil bacteria. Floodplain soil samples were collected from the South Alligator River floodplain in Northern Austral

[Steam and air co-injection in removing TCE in 2D-sand box].

Steam and air co-injection is a newly developed and promising soil remediation technique for non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in vadose zone. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism of the remediation process, trichloroethylene (TCE) removal using steam and air co-injection was carried out in a 2-dimensional sandbox with different layered sand structures. The results showed that co-injection perfectly improved the "tailing" effect compared to soil vapor extraction (SVE), and the remediation process of steam and air co-injection could be divided into SVE stage, steam strengthening

Adsorption of sulfonamides to demineralized pine wood biochars prepared under different thermochemical conditions.

The main objective of this study was to understand the key factors and mechanisms controlling adsorption of sulfonamides to biochars. Batch adsorption experiments were performed for sulfamethoxazole and sulfapyridine to three pine-wood biochars prepared under different thermochemical conditions: pyrolysis at 400 °C (C400) and 500 °C (C500), and pyrolysis at 500 °C followed with hydrogenation (C500-H). For both sulfonamides, the adsorbent surface area-normalized adsorption was stronger to C500 than to C400. This is attributable to the enhanced π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction with the ca
