Positive Youth Development Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Conceptual Framework and Systematic Review of Efficacy.

PURPOSE: Positive youth development (PYD) has served as a framework for youth programs in high-income countries since the 1990s and has demonstrated broad behavioral health and developmental benefits. PYD programs build skills, assets, and competencies; foster youth agency; build healthy relationships; strengthen the environment; and transform systems to prepare youth for successful adulthood. The goal of this article was to systematically review the impact of PYD programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nonmedical prescription psychiatric drug use and the darknet: A cryptomarket analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nonmedical prescription psychiatric drug use (NMPDU) is an increasing global health problem, with recent concern focusing on darknet cryptomarkets as sources of procurement. There is a shortage of evidence regarding comparative worldwide NMPDU trends, due in part to data collection difficulties. This problem is particularly marked for non-opioid drugs, particularly those psychiatric drugs which act on the central nervous system (CNS) and have high misuse potential and are associated with high levels of dependency and fatal overdose. This paper therefore has two goals: 1) to report

Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS): Implementation and Outcomes.

The opioid crisis has shown evidence worldwide and locally. There was no protocol to detect opioid withdrawal at this organization. The purpose of this project was to develop a nursing-driven opioid withdrawal management tool using the validated Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) to address an increase in opioid-addicted patients. Evidence-based practice change was executed using the San Diego 8A's method for adult trauma step-down patients experiencing opioid withdrawal with the COWS tool affecting frequency of nursing attempts at managing opioid withdrawal over an 8-week period. Risk-Taking Behaviors and Sexual Violence Among Secondary School Students in Tanzania.

There is limited district level data on drug or alcohol use as well as sex and reproductive history among secondary school students in Tanzania to inform prevention efforts. To address this, we conducted a survey of 2523 secondary school students in 2 districts (Bahi and Mpwapwa) and the Dodoma municipal area in Tanzania. Overall, fifty three percent were female and 67% were between the ages of 15 and 17 years old. Students in the Dodoma Municipality district self-reported the highest prevalence of forced sex, sex for gifts or money, and drug use. Students in the Bahi district reported the hig

Estimates of the national trend of drugs use during 2000-2030 in China: A population-based mathematical model.

BACKGROUND: The use of synthetic drugs has exceeded heroin to become a major public health concern in China. We aimed to estimate the trend of heroin-only, synthetic drug-only and poly-drug (heroin and synthetic drug) use during 2000-2030 period in China using existing data. METHODS: We used data from the Annual Report on Drug Control in China and peer-reviewed publications. We constructed a mathematical model to estimate the drug use trend based on Monte Carlo simulations. RESULTS: The best calibrated model estimated that the number of drug users would increase from 0.86 million to 3,120,05

The last 10 years: any changes in perceptions of the seriousness of alcohol, cannabis, and substance use in Canada?

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, there have been a number of changes in the Canadian landscape - the deconstruction of alcohol policy in some provinces, the legalization of cannabis, increased availability of gambling options, and the increase in opioid use and its associated problems. Have there been concomitant changes in societal images of addictions? METHODS: A general population survey on societal images of addictions was conducted in multiple countries in 2008 - Finland, Sweden, Canada (Canadian sample size: N = 864; 40% response rate), and part of Russia (St Petersburg). We repeated t

Definitive urine drug testing in office-based opioid treatment: a literature review.

Individuals who receive buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder in office-based settings may be at risk for, or have a history of, polysubstance use. Urine drug testing is an important clinical tool for monitoring medication adherence and patient stability; and screening for illicit drug use and dangerous drug-drug interactions. This article is intended to educate practitioners in office-based opioid treatment settings on selecting appropriate substances for a definitive drug testing panel that are known to be used concurrently, sequentially, or in combination with buprenorphine for op

Brachial plexus injury: An unusual devastating complication during hospitalization in intensive care unit.

Brachial plexus injury due to prolonged immobilization of the arms in a hyper-abducted position during intensive care unit (ICU) follow-up is uncommon. In this article, we present an unusual case of a 20-year-old male drug addict who sustained unattended brachial plexus injury in left upper extremity after being bound over the axilla tightly during ICU follow-up. He had progressive numbness and near-total immobility of the left upper extremity. Atrophy, loss of muscle strength, and absence of deep tendon reflexes were observed in left upper extremity. Electrodiagnostic studies showed lower tru

Opioid receptors: drivers to addiction?

Drug addiction is a worldwide societal problem and public health burden, and results from recreational drug use that develops into a complex brain disorder. The opioid system, one of the first discovered neuropeptide systems in the history of neuroscience, is central to addiction. Recently, opioid receptors have been propelled back on stage by the rising opioid epidemics, revolutions in G protein-coupled receptor research and fascinating developments in basic neuroscience. This Review discusses rapidly advancing research into the role of opioid receptors in addiction, and addresses the key que

LGBT communities and substance use in Queensland, Australia: Perceptions of young people and community stakeholders.

Sexual minority young people use licit and illicit substances at disproportionate levels. However, little is known about the perceptions of substance use among members of LGBT communities. This paper reports the results of a content analysis of 45 semi-structured interviews about substance use in LGBT communities with sexual minority young people (n = 31) and community stakeholders (n = 14). Results indicated both sexual minority youth and community stakeholders perceived the use and acceptance of substances to be higher in LGBT communities compared to the general population. Unpredictable Behavior Under the Influence of "Magic Mushrooms": A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Fatalities implicating psychedelic mushrooms are not a common clinical situation in everyday forensic medicine. Despite classification as an illegal drug in many countries, psilocybin mushrooms have the reputation of being safe. We report the case of a young man who jumped from a second story balcony under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms. The psilocin assay was performed by gas chromatography coupled to an electron-impact ionization time-of-flight detector (GC-EI-TOF) after solid-phase extraction. Total psilocin was quantified in peripheral and cardiac blood as 60 and 67 ng/mL, respectiv

Latent Classes of Polydrug Users as a Predictor of Crash Involvement and Alcohol Consumption.

OBJECTIVE: Polydrug users have been shown to be at higher risk for alcohol consumption and crash involvement. However, research has shown that polydrug groups differ in some important ways. It is currently unknown how polydrug-using groups differ in terms of crash involvement and alcohol consumption. METHOD: The current study used latent class analysis to examine subgroups of polydrug users (n = 384) among a sample of drivers in Virginia Beach, Virginia (N = 10,512). A series of logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between polydrug use categories and crash

Synthetic cathinones related fatalities: an update.

OBJECTIVE: Synthetic cathinones, more commonly known as "bath salts", are synthetic drugs chemically related to cathinone, a psychostimulant found in the khat plant. They are the first most consumed products among new psychoactive substances, which cause psychostimulant and hallucinogenic effects determining a number of fatalities worldwide.  In this paper, we have systematically reviewed cases of synthetic cathinones-related fatalities analytically confirmed, which have occurred in the last few years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant scientific articles were identified in Medline, Cochrane Ce
