Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare condition, characterized by its dramatic involvement of the skin and various mucosal surfaces including the oral mucosae, that severely impairs the affected patient's ability to speak, chew, or swallow. The purpose of this report was to present two cases with significant variations in the clinical presentation of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. In both situations, the patients' conditions were not immediately recognized. Pediatric dentists should be aware of these variations in the clinical manifestations of SJS, as the signs and symptoms can initially mimic

Trichotillomania is characterized by recurring hair pulling behavior and repeated attempts to decrease or stop the behavior. This behavior can cause a trichobezoar, which is a mass of hair found in the stomach. Patients with diagnosed celiac disease may have an urge to swallow their hair due to iron or folat deficiency, which is called pica. We report a case of an 11-year old girl with celiac disease who has had trichotillomania for a duration of 2 years, and required an operation due to residual gastric hair mass. In this case trichotillomania was more likely caused by behavioral disorders se

Children inevitably swallow foreign material accidentally or intentionally. Each type of ingestion carries their own set of risks and complications, short and long term, some requiring immediate attention while others close monitoring. Alkalotic household cleaning products and lithium button batteries are increasingly common and damage the esophagus quickly. While many toys with rare-earth metals are banned, they are already present in many households and can cause necrosis of bowel that is between the magnets. This article reviews the incidence and assessment along with current literature to

A clicking larynx can be described as a clicking sensation in the neck on swallowing or when moving the head, often associated with a tender or painful area in the neck. Diagnosis and therapy are challenging. In this article, we present a case report and overview of the current literature. The clicking larynx most often is reported to be a result of a displaced cornu superior of the thyroid cartilage, an enlarged greater cornu of the hyoid bone, or a short distance between the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone. If a possible cause is identified, surgery can be offered to the patient, although a

A term baby was transferred to our tertiary care center with desaturations and inability to manage upper airway secretions. Rigid bronchoscopy and swallowing study revealed cricopharyngeal (CP) achalasia. A gastrostomy tube insertion and Botulinum Toxin-A injection were performed at 6 weeks of age. Improvement of symptoms was observed, however were short-lived requiring recurrent injections. Given the symptom severity, at 8 months, a successful endoscopic CP myotomy was performed. Patient was able to tolerate oral feeds as early as 2 months post-operatively. This is the youngest patient, to ou

The percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube is an important method of providing enteral nutrition to patients with swallowing disorders and those who need long-term enteral nutritional support. The association between PEG tube migration and acute pancreatitis is rare and was previously described in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, only 11 cases have been reported in the literature. In this article, we are describing two cases of acute pancreatitis secondary to PEG tube balloon migration to the duodenum. These two case reports exemplify that PEG tube migration to the duodenu

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, neurodegenerative movement disorder that typically affects elderly patients. Swallowing disorders are highly prevalent in PD and can have grave consequences, including pneumonia, malnutrition, dehydration and mortality. Neurogenic dysphagia in PD can manifest with both overt clinical symptoms or silent dysphagia. Regardless, early diagnosis and objective follow-up of dysphagia in PD is crucial for timely and appropriate care for these patients. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the electrophysiological methods that can be used to objec

Lymphangiomas are benign tumours resulting from a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. They are relatively uncommon and usually diagnosed in infancy and early childhood. Commonly located at head and neck, they rarely occur in the oral cavity. Intraoral lymphangiomas occur more frequently on the dorsum of tongue, followed by palate, buccal mucosa, gingiva, and lips. Lymphangioma of the tongue is a common cause of macroglossia in children associated with difficulty in swallowing and mastication, speech disturbances, airway obstruction, mandibular prognathism, openbite and other possi

Aspiration risk from dysphagia increases with central and peripheral neurologic disease. Stroke, microvascular ischemic disease, a spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases, and advancing dementia all have unique aspects. However, there are distinct commonalities in this population. Increasing nutritional requirements to stave off oropharyngeal muscular atrophy and a sedentary lifestyle further tax the patient's abilities to safely swallow. This article reviews stroke, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and advanced demen

A 72-year-old woman presented with long-standing gastro-oesophageal reflux, regurgitation of swallowed food and worsening cervical dysphagia. Fluoroscopic barium oesophagography revealed a posterolateral pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum (ZD)) complicating a 'cup and spill' oesophageal deformity with a smoothly tapered segment at the gastro-oesophageal junction. CT and high-resolution manometry confirmed that the underlying abnormality was a massively dilated oesophagus with aperistalsis and pan-oesophageal pressurisation, consistent with a diagnosis of oesophageal achalasia (type II). Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome (HUVS) is a type III hypersensitivity reaction characterized by urticaria with persistent acquired hypocomplementemia. Although HUVS is uncommon, it is important for physicians to be familiar with this disease, as the initial presentation is often life-threatening angioedema. The author reports the case of a 47-year-old white woman with a history of HUVS. She presented to an outpatient clinic complaining of a rash and difficulty swallowing. Urticaria and angioedema were diagnosed. The patient was given epinephrine in the clinic and then transfe

Hydropneumothorax complicating to oesophagopleural and broncho-oesophageal fistula is an unusual presentation and is reported in literature as separate clinical entities. Here we present a case of hydropneumothorax with both oesophagopleural and broncho-oesophageal fistula of tuberculous aetiology occurring simultaneously in the same patient. Oesophagopleural fistula was suspected clinically by colour of pleural fluid. Subsequent barium swallow demonstrated leak of contrast material from oesophagus into pleural cavity. Later on, computed tomography of chest with oral contrast confirmed communi

We report a 58-year-old woman who presented with dysphagia and recurrent episodes of coughing and choking during swallowing 10 years after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with implantation of an anterior cervical plate. Barium esophagography revealed erosion of the cervical plate through the posterior wall of the pharyngoesophageal junction with an extraluminal collection that extended inferiorly as a track through the posterior wall of the trachea, producing a pharyngotracheal fistula. The pharyngeal perforation was repaired and the cervical hardware removed at surgery. This rare comp

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), an adjunctive approach for the treatment of epilepsy, was performed in three multiple sclerosis (MS) patients displaying postural cerebellar tremor (PCT) and dysphagia. Following VNS, improvement of PCT and dysphagia was manifested over a period of two and three months, respectively. In view of the involvement of the main brainstem visceral component of the vagus, the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), in modulating central pattern generators (CPGs) linked to both olive complex pathway and swallowing, improvement is likely to be VNS related. The results obtained s

A retro-oesophageal course of the right subclavian artery is referred to as "arteria lusoria". It may be related to severe compression of the trachea and oesophagus, typically resulting in impaired swallowing. The paper presents two patients with arteria lusoria, which in one patient was an aberrant right subclavian artery and in the other an aberrant left subclavian artery, originating from the right-sided aortic arch. In both cases the diagnosis was made with multi-slice computed tomography. The embryology of the anomalies and clinical status of the patients is discussed. Arteria lusoria sho

Oral and facial piercing with different kinds of body art are being observed more frequently in medical and dental practices. Principally, piercing is not a new form of body art and is traditional in different geographical areas. In this review, the possible risks and complications are described. Postprocedural complications are oedema, haemorrhage and infection. Other adverse outcomes include mucosal or gingival trauma, chipped or fractured teeth, increased salivary flow, calculus build-up, and interference with speech, mastication and swallowing. Hypopharyngeal perforation is mainly reported in association with high velocity road traffic accidents, or with low velocity direct blows to the neck. We report a case of hypopharyngeal perforation following a low velocity motorcycle accident where neither of these mechanisms of injury was apparent. A 52 year old man was referred from the emergency department (ED) with a sore throat and dysphagia, following a low speed side impact accident. A gastrograffin swallow demonstrated a posterior pharyngeal wall tear. After 11 days of conservative hospital treatment, he recovered and was discharged. T

Capsule endoscopy represents a significant advance in the investigation of small bowel diseases and the beginning of wireless endoscopic imaging. Capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a video capsule endoscope, which is painless and relatively safe. Its use has been established for suspected small bowel bleeding, and the role of capsule endoscopy in the investigation of inflammatory bowel disease, iatrogenic disease, polyposis syndromes and coeliac disease is evolving. It is likely that in many instances it will become the next test after standard endoscopic evaluation. Early data suggest that

Providing nutritional support after thermal burn injury is a critical element in achieving successful patient outcomes. The medical records of 28 patients admitted to an acute care burn unit and referred to speech pathology for a swallowing evaluation were reviewed for patterns of dysphagia care. Results revealed a strong positive linear relationship between percent body burns (r = .71), number of days with a tracheostomy (r = .85), number of days on the ventilator (r = .94) and days to oral feeding. These data can be used for comparison with other models of care, such as early identification

For much of the late 20th century, feeding tubes were often considered essential in the treatment of people with advanced Alzheimer's disease (AD) who developed swallowing or eating problems. Increasingly, the use of feeding tubes (i.e., percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG tubes), has been challenged by empirical research, which has not supported the rationales provided for this intervention. The purpose of this commentary is to explain why healthcare providers, in light of empirical evidence, should refrain from using the terms "life-sustaining" or "life-prolonging" when discussing tub
