A 22-year-old man presented with a two-year history of warts on the penis, scrotum, and thighs. Physical examination showed multiple annular plaques with thin, threadlike borders on the penis and scrotum. The biopsy specimen showed a cornoid lamella with underlying dyskeratotic cells that was consistent with porokeratosis. Genital porokeratosis is a rare condition that may be misdiagnosed as a sexually transmitted disease.

Multicystic nephroma is a rare renal pathology, which is characterized usually by a unilateral renal mass with multiple thin-walled cysts divided by septa. We report the case of a boy aged 2 years, who was diagnosed in utero with an abdominal cystic lesion during routine antenatal ultrasonography examination. The patient underwent a nephrectomy, and diagnosis of cystic nephroma was confirmed by histology.

A pneumocele refers to an aerated sinus with either focal or generalized thinning of the bony sinus wall. Although the pathogenesis of a pneumocele is not yet known, it is presumed that increased intrasinusal pressure, due to a one-way valve between the nasal cavity and the affected sinus, is responsible for this condition. A 37-year-old man with frontal bossing, who underwent surgery for cosmetic reasons, is presented.

The sudden death of a Cebus apella female (> 19 years old) on an experimental hyperlipidic diet during three years is described. The gross lesions were hemothorax, atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic curve, and an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. Histologically, an enlargement of the intima in the ascending aorta with hyalinization and a thrombus were observed. The media was thinned and showed sclerosis and hemorrhage extending to the tunica adventicia.

Pulmonary pneumatoceles are uncommon but generally benign, thin-walled parenchymal air collections arising in association with acute pneumonia. Rarely, they may attain such size as to severely affect respiration. We describe the percutaneous placement of multiple drains in a patient with pneumonia due to atypical measles and large pneumatoceles. Decompression via tubes resulted in improved ventilation and acceleration of recovery.

Twenty patients who had had upper limb reconstruction using the lateral arm free microvascular flap are reviewed. The size of the flap, modifications to the flap, and complications were documented. There was one flap failure, and nine flaps required surgical thinning at a second procedure. This sole disadvantage was outweighed in clinical usage by the advantages and versatility of the lateral arm flap.

A 26-year-old man had asymptomatic macroscopic hematuria. A left hydronephrotic sac outlined with a thin curvilinear shadow of calcium deposition was found in a plain film and stenosis at the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) in a retrograde pyelogram. Left nephrectomy was performed and the fluid content was 1330 ml. Histologic examination showed subepithelial calcification of the renal pelvis and fibrous proliferation at the UPJ.

Intravenous DSA was performed on 45 patients for diagnosis of otorhinolaryngologic diseases. Hypervascular glomus tumours can be accurately diagnosed. Furthermore, vascular architecture and topography can be analysed to allow the planning of tumour embolization or surgery. Hypovascular tumours are inadequately demonstrated by intravenous DSA. A specific and detailed analysis of thin vessel architecture in malignant tumours is impossible by intravenous DSA.

A female infant with brain and muscle abnormalities characteristic of Warburg syndrome had an atypical retinal dysplasia which appeared clinically as a 'leopard spot' retinopathy. The retinal histology is described in detail and is remarkable for periodic thinning of the inner nuclear layers and for isolated rosettes in the periphery. We believe 'leopard spot' retinopathy is yet another ocular manifestation of the Warburg syndrome.

The angiographic and high-resolution, thin-section CT appearance of the normal ambient cistern is correlated with anatomic dissections and sections of normal, formalin-fixed cadaver brains. Each of three separate anatomic segments of the ambient cistern--the supratentorial segment, the tentorial edge and the subtentorial segment--has a characteristic CT appearance that can be correlated with specific vascular structures on routine angiography.

Radiographic examination of a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) with pneumonia revealed a large pneumatocele. The pneumatocele, a thin-walled, partially fluid filled radiolucent area, occupied approximately one-third of the left thorax. Rapid resolution of the pneumatocele accompanied antimicrobial treatment of the pneumonia and coincided with clinical improvement. Severe pulmonary acariasis was found at postmortem 15 months later.

In this study, the authors evaluated the correlation between the radiological changes in the sella (using thin-section, complex motion tomography) and the location of pituitary microadenomas at surgery. A significant discrepancy was noted between the tomographic and surgical location of the tumor in 14 of 55 patients. The authors caution about absolute reliance upon tomography for making the diagnosis of pituitary microadenoma in a given patient.

The authors have provided ultrastructural demonstration from human material of a small rod shaped organism that represents the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease. The organisms are found mainly in intracytoplasmic vacuoles of alveolar cells. They have a thin outer cell wall and a more delicate plasma membrane. On the basis of morphology, arguments are presented to classify these unusual organisms as rickettsia-like.

When Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCYC 86, an inositol dependent strain, is grown at suboptimal concentrations of inositol, the buds are apparently unable to separate from the parent cells. Thin sections of such cells show an irregularly thickened cell wall. These morphological features may be due to a continuation or increase in the production of glucan while the synthesis of DNA, RNA, phospholipids.and protein is greatly inhibited.

Examination of the renal pelvis of late fetal and neonatal kidneys shows that in about one quarter of the calyces examined the arrangement is similat to that in the rat, the outer medulla being separated from the calyceal cavity by a very thin epithelium. It is suggested that this presents a vulnerable area through which intrarenal damage can occur as a result of vesico-ureteric reflux in the immature kidney.

Golgi studies reveal abnormally long, thin spines and the absence of short, thick spines on dendrites of cortical neurons in retarded children with normal karyotypes. The degree of dendritic spine loss and abnormality appears to be related to age and the severity of developmental retardation. Dendritic spine "dysgenesis" is a common feature of the microstructural pathology that occurs in profound mental retardation of unknown etiology.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) have emerged as promising building blocks for next-generation electronic devices, owing to their atomically sharp interfaces and unique electronic properties.
