Pirfenidone Reduces Intracochlear Fibrosis Caused by Cochlear Implantation in a Guinea Pig Model.

While cochlear implants allow restoration of sound perception in individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, there remains significant variability in patient outcomes. A potential factor that may account for this unexplained variability is the formation of fibrosis within the cochlea after implantation. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of pirfenidone (PFD) in preventing cochlear implant-induced fibrosis and compared outcomes with dexamethasone (DEX) treated animals. The utility of PFD was determined in cultures of fibrocytes isolated from the inner ear of guinea pigs. Sp

Microbial Growth Curve Framework Provides Insights for Controlling Opportunistic Pathogens in Building Plumbing.

The perception that high water retention time (WRT) in buildings increases microbial and pathogen growth drives costly flushing interventions, which lack a scientific framework to guide effective implementation. Here, we evaluate the effect of WRT from 1 to 21 days in an at-scale building plumbing rig with influent chloramine residuals of <0.2-2.5 mg/L as Cl2 and water heater set points of 40 and 60 °C. We found that the classic microbial growth curve consisting of lag, exponential growth, stationary, and decay phases provided a robust explanation of trends in bulk water total cell counts (TCC

Crowdsourced, Community-Engaged Volatile Organic Compound Monitoring and Source Apportionment near the Bristol Virginia Solid Waste Landfill.

Municipal solid waste landfills can emit complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but community exposures are difficult to characterize because concentrations vary across space and time and may be influenced by episodic odor events, meteorology, and nonlandfill sources. Community-engaged research approaches can help address these challenges while incorporating residents' local knowledge and concerns into monitoring study design. We conducted a community-engaged citizen-science study using a modified Ultrasonic Personal Air Sampler operated in accordance with U.S. EPA Method TO-17

Optotagging in primate cortex uncovers excitatory and inhibitory neuron specializations in form vision.

The perception of complex visual shapes is a hallmark of primates and a foundation for many of their decisions and actions. The neural mechanisms of this visual function are best studied in macaques, but progress in this animal model has been hampered by the inability to dissect the contributions of distinct neuronal cell types. Here, we developed and applied an optogenetic approach for identifying the responses of individual excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the macaque visual cortex with light. Using this optotagging approach in male macaques, we uncovered clear functional differences bet

Three methods for measuring the Earth's magnetic field intensity in Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) drone congregation areas.

The presence of magnetite in the abdomen of Apis mellifera suggests a role in magnetic signal perception, aiding orientation and navigation. Reproduction occurs in drone congregation areas (DCA), which are spatially and temporally stable, appearing in spring-summer during regionally specific mating flight times (midday to evening), when Earth's magnetic field intensity (EMFI) often increases. This coincidence points to a possible link between magnetism and DCA location. We evaluated 3 EMFI measurement methods-2 mobile apps (Crowdmag, Phyphox) and a low-cost magnetometer-at 3 known DCA in Argen

Selective behavioral, computational, and neural efficiency in executive function among open-skill athletes.

Executive function is critical for goal-directed behavior, and open-skill sport experience involves cognitively demanding environments that require rapid perception, decision-making, and action control. This study examined behavioral, computational, and neural differences in executive function between open-skill athletes and matched non-athlete controls. Forty-four open-skill athletes and 43 controls completed a task-switching paradigm, the Multi-Source Interference Task (MSIT), and an N-back task. Open-skill athletes responded significantly faster than controls in the task-switching paradigm

"The flash of awakened consciousness": dream images in Freud and Benjamin.

This essay explores the role of visual images in dream imagery as a space where unconscious processes intersect with historical forces. It offers a comparative reading in Freud's Interpretation of Dreams (1900) and Benjamin's Arcades Project (1982). Freud conceptualizes dream images as condensed memory traces that navigate between perception and hallucination, revealing repressed desires. Conversely, Benjamin's dream images critique modernity's loss of aura, offering moments of "Now-Time" as opportunities for historical creation. The essay argues that both Freud and Benjamin share a foundation

Numerical analysis of three-dimensional middle ear and inner ear based on nonlinear and viscoelastic constitutive relations.

Hearing is a critical sensory function for humans, and the dynamic behavior of the human ear is influenced by its constitutive relation. In this paper, a finite element model (FEM) of the middle ear with a nonlinear constitutive relation and the inner ear with a viscoelastic constitutive relation was developed based on CT scanning data of the clinical human ear. The frequency-response at the tympanic membrane (TM) and stapes footplate (SF), as well as the amplitude-frequency response and time-domain response curves at different positions of the basilar membrane (BM) were obtained by using the

A Wearable Earplug-Shaped Piezoresistive Sensor Based on Ear Canal Deformation for the Screening of Temporomandibular Joint Motion Abnormalities.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD), as a multifactorial oral disease, has long relied on diagnostic methods of clinical palpation and imaging. However, these approaches are highly subjective, costly, and invasive. Inspired by the principle of clinical palpation, this study proposed a noninvasive detection method based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite aerogel piezoresistive sensing technology. A smart earbud sensor was designed and assembled to monitor the deformation of the anterior wall of the external auditory canal. The sensor exhibits an extremely low detection threshold of 14.5 Pa

[Anamnesis and examination of an elderly patient.].

Based on their own clinical experience and literature data, the authors present the features of collecting anamnesis of the disease and examining elderly and senile patients. Practical methods of interviewing an elderly patient with age-related memory disorders (collecting an anamnesis of the disease at the same time as the anamnesis of life), hearing (being in the patient's field of vision, avoiding high tones in the voice, speaking clearly, slowly, in silence, the doctor's face should be clearly visible to the patient) are proposed. The article presents the features of collecting medical his

Patient-reported outcomes with subcutaneous immunoglobulin in secondary immunodeficiency.

Subcutaneous (SCIG) and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) replacement are both used to prevent infections in patients with secondary immunodeficiency (SID). Compared with IVIG, SCIG has fewer systemic side effects and, additionally, facilitates home-based treatment. Shared decision-making practice should include discussion of aspects such as patient preference as well as the associated risks and benefits of treatment. We review the available evidence for the use of SCIG treatment in patients with SID, focusing on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). In most studies, there were improvements to hea

An efficient reparameterized small object detection transformer for thermal infrared images.

Accurate and efficient small object detection in thermal infrared images remains a critical challenge due to inherent issues such as low contrast, limited texture, and deployment constraints on edge platforms like Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This paper presents PWL-RTDETR, an efficient Transformer-based framework specifically designed for infrared small object detection. The proposed model incorporates a novel Partial Convolutional Reparameterization Block (PConvRep-Block), which fuses Partial Convolution and reparameterization to support multi-branch training and single-path inference, sig

A high recognition accuracy tactile sensor based on boron nitride nanosheets/epoxy composites for material identification.

Tactile sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) showed great potential for self-driven sensing in material identification. The existing TENG devices used strongly electrophilic materials as friction layers. For test materials with electrophilicity, their output signals are weak and difficult to efficiently recognize. Here, a TENG-based sensor with boron nitride nanosheets/waterborne epoxy (BNNSs/WEP) composites as the friction layer was proposed for improving the accuracy of identifying negative charged materials. During the process of contact friction with negative charged objec

Converting the residue from an infiltration water treatment plant (Wrocław, Poland) into a hematite red pigment-optimising the process with a Doehlert experimental matrix.

Referring to the concept of a circular economy and using optimal experimental design (OED), the research deals with optimising the conversion of industrial residue from the water de-ironing process into a red hematite pigment. The raw, chemically pretreated sludge was thermally converted into hematite under various conditions established in the optimised procedure. The products were thoroughly characterised using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and SEM EDS to gain better insight into the process. Because of the unambiguous and quantitative definition of colour and it

Molecular basis of quinine-induced feeding suppression in Hyphantria cunea larvae.

BACKGROUND: Feeding behavior in herbivorous insects is profoundly influenced by chemical cues present in their environment, with some compounds serving as deterrents that reduce or completely inhibit feeding. The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, is a highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest that poses significant threats to forestry and agriculture because of its broad host range and high reproductive potential. Despite studies on its feeding ecology, the molecular mechanisms underlying its aversive response to bitter compounds remain largely unexplored. RESULTS: We demonstrate that quinine signif
