Incontinentia pigmenti: case report.

Incontinentia pigmenti or Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant disorder with characteristic skin, hair, eye, dental and neurologic abnormalities mostly affecting females. We report a case of a female newborn exhibiting characteristic cutaneous and neurologic findings with one-year follow-up.

A 14-year-old girl with an unusual combination of incontinentia pigmenti and conversion disorder.

Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare X-linked neurological-skin genetic disease. Some studies have shown that about 30~40% of patients with IP have varying symptoms of eye/central nervous system which are the major causes of disability. Conversion disorder is one of the most common mental diseases in children and may exhibit the single or multiple neurological symptoms. In this paper, we will report a child with new and rare incontinentia pigmenti accompanied by conversion disorder and explore the relationship of this rare combination.

A nonsense mutation in the IKBKG gene in mares with incontinentia pigmenti.

Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a large and heterogeneous group of hereditary disorders characterized by abnormalities in structures of ectodermal origin. Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an ED characterized by skin lesions evolving over time, as well as dental, nail, and ocular abnormalities. Due to X-linked dominant inheritance IP symptoms can only be seen in female individuals while affected males die during development in utero. We observed a family of horses, in which several mares developed signs of a skin disorder reminiscent of human IP. Cutaneous manifestations in affected horses includ…

Insight into IKBKG/NEMO locus: report of new mutations and complex genomic rearrangements leading to incontinentia pigmenti disease.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an X-linked-dominant Mendelian disorder caused by mutation in the IKBKG/NEMO gene, encoding for NEMO/IKKgamma, a regulatory protein of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kB) signaling. In more than 80% of cases, IP is due to recurrent or nonrecurrent deletions causing loss-of-function (LoF) of NEMO/IKKgamma. We review how the local architecture of the IKBKG/NEMO locus with segmental duplication and a high frequency of repetitive elements favor de novo aberrant recombination through different mechanisms producing genomic microdeletion. We report here a new microindel (c.43…

Incontinentia pigmenti: a newborn with characteristic skin lesions and bilateral optic atrophy: case report and review of literature.

Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP) is a rare X-linked dominant disorder with skin, eye, central nervous system (CNS) and tooth abnormalities. According to the reported cases, it is estimated that there have been nearly 900-1200 affected individuals. In this article, the literature is reviewed and a case of IP with characteristic skin lesions and optic atrophy is presented.

Incontinentia pigmenti diagnostic criteria update.

In 1993 diagnostic criteria for incontinentia pigmenti (IP), a genodermatosis in which skin changes are usually combined with anomalies of other organs, were established. Approximately a decade ago, IKBKG gene mutation was discovered as a cause for IP. This finding has not been included in IP diagnosis so far. In addition, literature data pointed out a few other clinical findings as possible IP diagnostic criteria. Literature facts concerning IP diagnosis were analyzed. Different organ anomalies, their frequency and severity, were analyzed in the context of applicability as IP diagnostic crite…

A case of linear porokeratosis treated with photodynamic therapy with confocal microscopy surveillance.

Linear porokeratosis (LP) is a rare clinical porokeratosis variant, which typically presents at birth, but can also develop in adulthood. Differential diagnosis includes linear lichen planus, lichen striatus, linear verrucous epidermal nevus, incontinentia pigmenti and linear Darier's disease. An LP lesion has an increased risk of transformation into a squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma. The treatment of LP is contradictory and disappointing in general. We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with multiple reddish-brown macules and depressions on the medial aspect of her right arm…

Giant inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus: successfully treated with full thickness excision and skin grafting.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a pruritic, erythematous scaly epidermal nevus which follows a Blaschko's lines. Lichen striatus, linear Darier disease, linear porokeratosis, linear lichen planus, linear psoriasis, and the verrucous stage of incontinentia pigmenti may all have similar clinical presentations as the linear verrucous epidermal nevus. ILVEN can be distinguished from true nevoid psoriasis by pruritus and lack of response to antipsoriatic treatments. Various therapeutic modalities have been described, but no one therapy has been successful consistently. Thou…

Macular epiretinal membrane peeling treatment outcomes in young children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe macular epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling treatment outcomes in young children. METHODS: The medical records of all vitrectomies from 1998 through 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who were selected were 16 years or younger and had primarily macular or posterior pole disease secondary to an ERM. Patients with retinopathy of prematurity, Coats disease, Norrie disease, and incontinentia pigmenti were excluded. Fourteen patients underwent vitrectomy with ERM peeling, and their preoperative and postoperative visual acuities were compar…

Dental and oral anomalies in incontinentia pigmenti: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an X-linked genodermatosis caused by a mutation of the IKBKG gene. The objective of this study was to present a systematic review of the dental and oral types of anomalies, to determine the total number and sex distribution of the anomalies, and to analyze possible therapies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the literature data from 1,286 IP cases from the period 1993-2010. RESULTS: Dental and/or oral anomalies were diagnosed for 54.38% of the investigated IP patients. Most of the anomaly types were dental, and the most frequent of these were dent…

Neurological findings in incontinentia pigmenti; a review.

Incontinentia Pigmenti is a rare X-linked multisystem disorder with well described and pathognomonic skin manifestations. Neurological manifestations are found in 30% of IP patients, forming one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality of the condition. In this review, clinical and brain imaging data of 45 IP patients with a neurological phenotype are reviewed. Several clinical presentations could be identified, comprising seizures, infantile encephalopathy, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and ischemic stroke. Most neurological features presented during the neonatal period. No patie…

Incontinentia pigmenti with ocular involvement: two cases.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare, X-linked dominant disorder that presents at or soon after birth and presents with cutaneous signs and symptoms. Besides its typical skin signs presenting in all patients, central nervous system (CNS), ophthalmologic and dental involvement are encountered as well. In this report, we present two patients at the verrucous stage of IP and review the literature concerning the diagnosis and course of IP.

Serial cytokine expressions in infants with incontinentia pigmenti.

NF-κB dysfunction resulting from NEMO (NF-kappaB essential modulator) mutation can lead to significant alterations in cytokine production. However, little is known about changes in the expression of downstream molecules in patients with incontinentia pigmenti (IP). We aim to investigate serial cytokine expressions during the first 2 years of life in young infants with IP, the period in which skin inflammation and morphological changes are most significant. Gene analysis and X-inactivation test were performed for the two neonates with IP. Peripheral mononuclear cells were obtained after birth a…
