Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that causes loss of the tooth-supporting apparatus, including periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. A broad range of treatment options is currently available to restore the structure and function of the periodontal tissues. A regenerative approach, among others, is now considered the most promising paradigm for this purpose, harnessing the unique properties of stem cells. How to make full use of the body's innate regenerative capacity is thus a key issue. While stem cells and bioactive factors are essential components in the regenerative pr

The treatment of chronic periodontitis consists of conventional mechanical debridement and removal of plaque and calculus'. Topical NSAIDs could be used to complement the therapy as an adjunct to resolve the inflammatory process and clinical signs of the disease more rapidly. A randomized clinical trial was performed on 33 systemically healthy patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis, aged 21 to 40 years. All patients underwent scaling and root planing on one quadrant per week, and sub-gingival gel was applied 48 hours after each session. Patients were grouped into 4 treatment protocols w

Osteosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor whose cancerous cells produce osteoid matrix. It is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, accounting for approximately 20% of the sarcomas, but only 5% of the osteosarcomas occur in the jaws. They present various clinical and histological aspects, as well as variable disease progression and outcome. This article shows a case report of a 20-year-old woman who presented swelling near the mandibular left premolar. After clinical diagnosis of lesion of the dental periapex, the patient initially underwent endodontic treatment of the tooth involv

A cavus deformity of the foot is easily recognizable, but appropriate neurologic assessment can help to determine the etiology. Cavovarus, the most frequent type of cavus foot, presents with an elevated medial longitudinal arch, first ray plantarflexion, and, if rigid, a fixed heel varus. Common causes include progressive motor sensory conditions, typically Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and nonprogressive conditions such as cerebral palsy and poliomyelitis. A calcaneocavus foot may be seen in poliomyelitis, spinal dysraphism, and peripheral neuropathy. Initially, the cavus deformity is flexible

Autosomal dominant juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare disorder and so far only one family has been reported. Genetic linkage studies mapped the disease locus to chromosome 9q34 (ALS4). The diagnosis of ALS in this family is based on the clinical signs with almost exclusively lower motor neurone pathology in combination with less prominent pyramidal tract signs. Atypical features include normal life expectancy, the absence of bulbar involvement and the symmetrical distal distribution of atrophy and weakness. We performed a molecular genetic study in three families that we ha

Catecholamines may play an important role in the control of intrapulpal pressure as mediators of vasoconstriction. A baseline level of catecholamines (dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) in the uninflamed human dental pulp was previously reported using high-performance liquid chromatography. The purpose of this study was to compare the level of catecholamines present in the inflamed human dental pulp with the baseline level established in virgin teeth. Twelve uninflamed pulps were analyzed as a control and to validate previous findings. Pulp tissue was obtained from 10 vital and inflame

The SOX10 transcription factor is involved in development of neural crest derivatives and fate determination in glial cells. SOX10 mutations have been found in patients with intestinal aganglionosis and depigmentation with deafness (Waardenburg-Hirschsprung). Associated neurological signs have been reported in some cases, including a patient exhibiting a central and peripheral myelin deficiency. Therefore, we screened for SOX10 mutations in a large cohort of patients with peripheral and central myelin disorders. 56 were affected by classical demyelinating Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease without id

Two patients with a long history of unexplained thrombocytopenia, eventually diagnosed with von Willebrand's disease (vWD) type 2B are reported. In one patient with platelet counts of 80 x 10(9)/l 1-desamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP) had a favourable effect during bleeding episodes. The second patient received intermediate purity von Willebrand's factor (vWF)/factor VIII concentrate (Haemate HS), which helped haemostasis during tooth extraction. It increased platelet counts from 15 to 30 x 10(9)/l, whereas platelet transfusions produced no increase, nor prevented severe bleeding during

Mutations in the gene encoding the gap junction protein connexin32 (Cx32) cause X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMTX), a common form of inherited demyelinating peripheral neuropathy. To learn more about the pathogenesis of CMTX, we examined the PNS and CNS of cx32-null mice (cx32-/Y males and cx32-/-females) by light and electron microscopy. These mice develop a progressive demyelinating peripheral neuropathy beginning by 3 months of age, and at all ages, motor fibers are more affected than sensory fibers. Like other genes of the X chromosome, the cx32 gene appears to be randomly inactiv

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is an autosomal recessive disease composed of failure of various endocrine glands, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, and an ectodermal dystrophy complex including hypoplasia of the dental enamel. To characterize the enamel defect further, we studied enamel microanatomy by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in clinically affected permanent teeth from three APECED patients. In all three cases, the enamel was partially hypoplastic and morphologically aberrant. Hypoplasia was evident as a horizontal band or as

Dental enamel pitting was studied as a diagnostic sign of pediatric tuberous sclerosis (TSC). Thirteen patients aged 2.5 to 18 years with varying degrees of TSC were evaluated. They were checked for the presence of enamel pitting by the use of two to three drops of dental plaque disclosing stain which was applied to the labial surfaces of dry teeth. This technique provides a remarkable color contrast allowing for the detection of many small and subtle enamel pits. A control group of 39 unrelated patients without TSC were also examined. A total of 77% of TSC patients (10/13) revealed enamel pit

Desmopressin (DDAVP) has gained wide acceptance as the drug of first choice in the treatment or prevention of haemorrhages in the majority of patients with von Willebrand's disease (vWd). However, data concerning the clinical effectiveness of DDAVP refer generally to mild vWd, with factor VIII and vW factor levels usually above 20% of normal. In 14 patients with type I vWd characterized by very low plasma levels of factor VIII coagulant activity (VIII:C) and vWf, measured as ristocetin cofactor activity (lower than 20% and 3% of normal respectively), but with a normal intraplatelet content of

A simple method was devised to measure the F-wave conduction velocity (FWCV) in the central segment (knee to spinal cord) of the peroneal and tibial nerves in contrast to the conventional motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) in the distal segment (knee to ankle). In 33 normal subjects, the FWCV in the central segment (56.3 +/- 4.9 meters/sec for peroneal nerve; 54.4 +/- 3.6 meters/sec for tibial nerve) was slightly faster than the MNCV in the distal segment (49.5 +/- 3.8 meters/sec; 46.8 +/- 3.4 meters/sec) as measured in the conventional manner. In 4 of 14 patients with the Guillain-Barrĕ s

BACKGROUND: The HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study (HCSUS) was conducted by a consortium of private and government institutions centered at the RAND Corp. to provide national estimates of adult medical patients who are HIV-positive. This article presents descriptive oral health findings from that study.
METHODS: The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) conducted four interviews of a nationally representative sample of adults with HIV who made a medical visit for regular care in early 1996. This article uses data from the second interview conducted between December 1996 and July 1997.

Use of matierials of animal or human origin in dentistry (and generally in medicine) these days is regarded as an unusal way of intervention. However in earlier times, different tissues, parts, products and organs of animals were frequently used in healing. Some of these methods were rooted in magical thinking. As analogical treatments--based on similarity or analogy--e.g. powder of horn or teeth of pike was used for the treatment of decayed teeth and different worms, maggots, veenies were applied against "toothworm". By difficult eruption of primary teeth bone marrow or brain mixed with cockr

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare condition that can quickly become life-threatening if appropriate treatment is delayed. This condition is observed as a rapidly progressive infection that causes extensive necrosis of the superficial fascia. This report presents a case of cervicofacial NF with microbiological isolation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a patient with a history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus following a minor scalp trauma. The article also presents two cases of NF secondary to odontogenic infection. The radiographic finding of the presence of
