Home-based low-field magnetic stimulation as an adjunctive treatment for bipolar depression: A randomized double-blind study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar depression (BD-D) is associated with high morbidity and suicide risk, yet effective non-pharmacological interventions remain limited. Low-field magnetic stimulation (LFMS), an ultra-low intensity whole-brain neuromodulation, offers potential for home-based therapy. This first randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluated repeated home-based LFMS efficacy and safety in BD-D. METHODS: Sixty patients with ICD-10-defined bipolar depression (current depressive episode) were randomized to adjunctive active LFMS or sham stimulation (1:1), delivered twice daily for 2 weeks (28 sessi

Patient preferences for medications to treat opioid use disorder in carceral settings: Implications for tailored implementation and service delivery.

BACKGROUND: A critical lack of knowledge exists about incarcerated individuals' preferences for the provision of medications to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) in carceral settings (i.e., jail, prison) and of multilevel factors that influence preferences (e.g., health needs, institutional policies). This gap limits the ability to tailor MOUD programs effectively to patient needs and optimize outcomes within correctional systems. METHODS: In 2025, 28 adults receiving MOUD in the community in the Northeastern United States and who previously received MOUD while incarcerated completed an in-dep

Spinal Anesthesia and Digital Anxiolysis (SPIDA) for the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis - a feasibility study.

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a prevalent condition, particularly in elderly patients, characterized by a clinical syndrome that includes buttock or lower extremity pain, commonly associated with sensory and motor dysfunction. The surgical management of these patients is challenging due to higher rates of comorbidities and increased risks of experiencing complications such as postoperative delirium, leading to intensive care and prolonged hospital stays. Awake surgery under spinal anaesthesia (SA) has been associated with advantages concerning the occurrence of complications and the clinical

The C2H2 transcription factor SltA is required for germination and hyphal development in Aspergillus fumigatus.

Germination of inhaled Aspergillus fumigatus conidia is a necessary sequitur for infection. Germination of conidia starts with the breaking of dormancy, which is initiated by an increase of the cellular perimeter in a process termed isotropic growth. This swelling phase is followed by polarized growth, resulting in the formation of a germ tube. The multinucleate tubular cells exhibit tip growth from the hyphae, after which lateral branches emerge to form the mycelial network. The regulatory mechanisms governing conidial germination are not well defined. In this study, we identified a novel rol

Clitoral anesthesia disrupts paced copulation in the female rat.

Clitoral stimulation produced by sexual contact with a partner or during manual stimulation is associated with pleasure in humans, and produces conditioned place preference in rats. The present experiment investigated the effect of blocking genitosensory stimulation of the clitoris with lidocaine during copulation in female rats on a measure of female sexual motivation: pacing behavior. Sexually naïve, ovariectomized female rats were treated with 10μg estradiol benzoate 48h and 500μg progesterone 4h prior to a 30-min copulatory trial with a sexually vigorous stimulus male scheduled every 4days

A phase-aware Cross-Scale U-MAMba with uncertainty-aware segmentation and Switch Atrous Bifovea EfficientNetB7 classification of kidney lesion subtype.

Kidney lesion subtype identification is essential for precise diagnosis and personalized treatment planning. However, achieving reliable classification remains challenging due to factors such as inter-patient anatomical variability, incomplete multi-phase CT acquisitions, and ill-defined or overlapping lesion boundaries. In addition, genetic and ethnic morphological variations introduce inconsistent imaging patterns, reducing the generalizability of conventional deep learning models. To address these challenges, we introduce a unified framework called Phase-aware Cross-Scale U-MAMba and Switch

Major depletion of insulin sensitivity-associated taxa in the gut microbiome of persons living with HIV controlled by antiretroviral drugs.

BACKGROUND: Persons living with HIV (PWH) harbor an altered gut microbiome (higher abundance of Prevotella and lower abundance of Bacillota and Ruminococcus lineages) compared to non-infected individuals. Some of these alterations are linked to sexual preference and others to the HIV infection. The relationship between these lineages and metabolic alterations, often present in aging PWH, has been poorly investigated. METHODS: In this study, we compared fecal metagenomes of 25 antiretroviral-treatment (ART)-controlled PWH to three independent control groups of 25 non-infected matched individua

Propofol improves sleep deprivation-induced sleep structural and cognitive deficits via upregulating the BMAL1 expression and suppressing microglial M1 polarization.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation (SD) is a growing global health problem with many deleterious effects, such as cognitive impairment. Microglia activation-induced neuroinflammation may be an essential factor in this. Propofol has been shown to clear sleep debt after SD in rats. This study aims to evaluate the effects of propofol-induced sleep on ameliorating sleep quality impairment and cognitive decline after 48 h SD. METHODS: Almost 8-12-week-old rats were placed in the SD system for 48 h of natural sleep or continuous SD. Afterwards, rats received propofol (20 mg·kg-1·h-1, 6 h) via the tail o
