Serial measurements of lung function in a cohort of young children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively and longitudinally measure lung function in a cohort of children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) during their first 3 years of life. METHODS: Forty-four children with BPD with a mean (+ or - SD) gestational age of 25.6 (+ or - 1.7) weeks and birth weight of 0.767 (+ or - 0.2) kg underwent serial measurements of lung function (maximum flow at functional residual capacity [V(max)FRC] and functional residual capacity [FRC]) at 6, 12, and 24 months after initial discharge from the neonatal care unit. RESULTS: Compared with normative data, children with

The real-time interplay between identity, emptiness, and nonsuicidal self-injury ideation: An ecological momentary assessment study in treatment-seeking individuals.

Although research has shown that individuals with identity difficulties are at greater risk of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), less is known about the associations between identity, emptiness, and NSSI ideation in daily life. This study addressed this gap using an ecological momentary assessment design with six daily EMA surveys for 28 days in a treatment-seeking sample of 123 adolescents and adults (mean age = 23.07, SD = 5.32), yielding a total of 14,776 longitudinal assessments (median compliance = 77.4%). Results showed that lower-than-usual momentary identity synthesis and higher-than-usu

[Proposals from a French expert panel for respiratory care in ALS patients].

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive diaphragm weakness and deteriorating lung function. Bulbar involvement and cough weakness contribute to respiratory morbidity and mortality. ALS-related respiratory failure significantly affects quality of life and is the leading cause of death. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV), which is the main recognized treatment for alleviating the symptoms of respiratory failure, prolongs survival and improves quality of life. However, the optimal timing for the initiation of NIV is still a matter of

Surface electromyography (sEMG) biofeedback posture training improves the physical and mental health of early adolescents with mild scoliosis: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetry in paraspinal muscle activities is observed in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and may be of value for predicting curve progression. We have reported the effects of the surface electromyography biofeedback posture training program in improving the symmetry of paraspinal muscle activities and reducing the curve progression of early adolescents with mild scoliosis. This study further explored their subjective experience of the training program on posture correction and health-related quality of life. METHODS: Using purposive sampling, 13 early adolescents aged between 11

Disability and its determinants among individuals with onchocerciasis in Southeast Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: although onchocerciasis is rarely a life-threatening disease, it causes chronic morbidity which ultimately leads to disability due to late detection and treatment of the infected people. Disability in Onchocerciasis results in activity limitation and social exclusion of the affected individuals through stigma. This study aimed at assessing the level of disability and its determinants among persons with onchocerciasis. METHODS: multi-stage sampling technique was used to recruit 340 respondents from the randomly selected wards. Disability was assessed using WHO Disability Assessme

Cost Consequence Analysis of the Management of Hyperkalemia by Patiromer and Optimization of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitors Therapy in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients in Saudi Arabia.

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) have been shown to improve outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients but are associated with an increased risk of hyperkalemia in this vulnerable population. Hyperkalemia often leads to patients' downtitrating or discontinuing RAASi which can result in sub-optimal health outcomes. The objective is to evaluate the cost and health benefits of maintaining normokalemia using patiromer, an oral potassium binder while optimizing RAASi therapy in CKD patients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The medium-to long-term costs and health outcom

Development of Nerve Fibre Diameter in Young Infants With Hirschsprung Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Finding thickened nerve fibres is one of the key elements in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease (HD); however, its value at different ages remains uncertain. Nerve fibre diameters <40 μm can be observed in infants younger than 8 weeks, despite the presence of HD. The aim of this study was to identify a change in maximum nerve fibre diameter in HD patients, measured before and after 8 weeks of age. METHODS: Nerve fibre diameter was retrospectively evaluated in tissue of 20 infants treated for definite HD. Rectal suction biopsies (RSBs) obtained within the first 8 weeks of life (

The epidemiology of traumatic event exposure worldwide: results from the World Mental Health Survey Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research has documented that exposure to traumatic events has negative effects on physical and mental health. Much less research has examined the predictors of traumatic event exposure. Increased understanding of risk factors for exposure to traumatic events could be of considerable value in targeting preventive interventions and anticipating service needs. METHOD: General population surveys in 24 countries with a combined sample of 68 894 adult respondents across six continents assessed exposure to 29 traumatic event types. Differences in prevalence were examined wit

Willingness to pay as patient preference to bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: An obesity epidemic is spreading worldwide. In addition to comorbidities, social and emotional problems contribute to reduce the quality of life (QoL) of obese people. Considering the heterogeneity of outcomes from clinical and surgical approaches, it is recommended that severely obese patients participate in their treatment decisions. This study evaluated preferences of severely obese patients for obesity surgical treatment using the willingness to pay (WTP) and to assess the impact of the presence of some clinical disorders, socioeconomic conditions and QoL on their decisions. Bridging the Gap in Laboratory Monitoring of Extended Half-Life Factor VIII and IX: Can Thrombin Generation Assays Overcome Assay Discrepancies?

The management of hemophilia A has been transformed by the introduction of extended half-life factor VIII (EHL-FVIII) products. Similarly, the development of extended half-life factor IX (EHL-FIX) products has also impacted the treatment of hemophilia B, improving treatment adherence and reducing bleeding episodes. These bioengineered molecules, created through Fc-fusion, PEGylation, single-chain technologies, or albumin conjugation (particularly for FIX), offer patients reduced infusion frequency while maintaining effective bleed protection. However, the structural modifications of both EHL-F

Biopower, Necropolitics, and the Afterlives of Infants: Uncovering the Ethics of Historical Anatomical Collections.

OBJECTIVES: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many fetuses and infants were collected for anatomical study. Yet little research has explored their origins or the ethical implications of holding and using these individuals in teaching and research. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper reviews the literature on fetal and infant skeletal collections and presents a case study from the W. D. Trotter Anatomy Museum in Aotearoa New Zealand that uses the lens of biopower and necropolitics to examine the acquisition and use of these individuals in anatomical education. This model highlights how socie

'It showed me that he sensed I was there. . .', The 'relational' use of an electrophysiological tool for evaluating the level of discomfort of people at the end of life: A reflexive thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Analgesia Nociception Index device may serve as a guide to a person's parasympathetic activity via the heart rate variability. It is used to assess the level of discomfort of non-communicative patients at the end of life. Although the index's acceptability in palliative care have been demonstrated, the healthcare professionals and the patient's relatives did not have direct, continuous access to the monitor screen. AIM: To evaluate how healthcare professionals and patients' relatives in a palliative care unit perceived the use of the Analgesia Nociception Index. DESIGN: A qua

Intermediate insights: tracing trematodes infecting amphibians via their first intermediate snail hosts.

BACKGROUND: Amphibians are a prime example of the global biodiversity crisis, as they represent the most threatened group of vertebrates. Yet, amphibian macroparasites remain one of the most poorly described groups of parasites, with the majority of species lacking comprehensive morphological, molecular, or ecological data. Among these, digenean trematodes constitute a dominant group and feature multi-host life cycles. This study examines the first intermediate hosts of trematodes, aquatic gastropods, to assess the occurrence, prevalence, and seasonality of amphibian trematodes. METHODS: A to
