The authors present a retrospective study of 87 patients treated by normovolemic hemodilution associated to hyperbaric oxygenation. This paper reports findings in a pair of temporal bones from a patient with clinical evidence of Lermoyez's syndrome, a rare variant of Meniere's disease. Endolymphatic hydrops is limited to the basal turn of the cochlea and saccule in Lermoyez's syndrome, but more generalized in Meniere's disease.

An 18-year follow-up of a case of bilateral Lermoyez's syndrome is presented. The left ear having reached a stabilized hearing loss about 9 years after the onset of the disease, the right ear, apart from some isolated early periods of hearing loss, started to show the full extent of clinical symptoms after about 16 years. Otosclerosis begins in the second and third decades of life but usually does not produce a hearing loss until after the fourth decade. Chalky white plaques in the tympanic membrane may be benign, but when associated with hearing loss may point to tympanosclerosis. Presbycusis is the most common cause of hearing loss. On the basis of this study of 111 patients with herpes zoster and 88 with postherpetic neuralgia, it is suggested that the intradermal injection of triamcinolone in saline is a valuable treatment.
