Efficiency of different imaging methods in detecting ocular foreign bodies.

BACKGROUND: Ocular foreign bodies (OFBs) are a relatively common occurrence in ocular injuries, and a severe risk factor for vision disorders. They are notoriously challenging to identify and localize precisely to allow surgical removal, even with the most recent technological advancements. PURPOSE: To compare the efficiency of different imaging methods in detecting and localizing OFBs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients with OFBs, detected by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and confirmed during surgery. Patients who presented to our medical cent

Utility of video-fundoscopy and prospects of portable stereo-photography of the ocular fundus in neurological patients.

BACKGROUND: Proper evaluation of ocular fundi is an integral part of neurological examination. Unfortunately, neurology residents are increasingly uncomfortable performing fundoscopy and interpreting findings because of diminishing skills and lack of experience. This became more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic as fundoscopy requires proximity to the patient. With the recent dramatic improvement of smartphone cameras, fundus photography using the PanOptic Ophthalmoscope (Welch Allyn, Skaneateles Falls, NY) with a smartphone adapter offered an alternative to direct fundoscopic examination

Multi-parametric evaluation of autologous cultivated Limbal epithelial cell transplantation outcomes of Limbal stem cell deficiency due to chemical burn.

BACKGROUND: The sparsity of established tools for the grading of limbal stem cell deficiency hinder objective assessments of the clinical outcome of cultivated limbal epithelial cell transplantation. To advance towards the development of standards for the comparison of the outcomes of these bio-surgical protocols we have now applied a battery of recognized objective and patient-declared subjective outcome criteria to the autologous modality of cultivated limbal epithelial cell transplantation. METHODS: The prospective study involved ten patients (M/F = 9/1; mean age = 42.1 years) displaying o

Lymphoma of the ocular adnexa.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decades, the incidence of ocular adnexal lymphomas has been increasing. Over the last decade advances in the imaging of ocular adnexal lymphomas have enabled precise biopsies of the tumors. Biopsies are necessary for immunophenotyping, correct molecular classification and the immediate start of the appropriate treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, we collected data from 16 patients (19 eyes) treated for lymphoma of the ocular adnexa between 2006 and 2011 with various tumor sites. We evaluated ocular symptoms of the patients in correlation to the

From Blinding Vitreous Hemorrhage to 20/20: Multimodal Management of Presumed Tubercular Retinal Vasculitis in a Tuberculosis-Endemic Setting.

Tubercular retinal vasculitis (TRV) is an ocular manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis that can lead to vision-threatening complications such as recurrent vitreous hemorrhage and cystoid macular edema (CME). Even after completing a full course of anti-tubercular therapy (ATT), persistent intraocular inflammation may drive delayed recurrences of CME, highlighting the need for vigilant, escalation-based management. We report a case of a 31-year-old Indonesian woman who presented with sudden-onset hand motion vision in her left eye. Fundus examination was obscured by dense vitreous hemorrha

Clinical Vignettes, Part II: Eyes, Teeth, and Bone.

Microvascular occlusions caused by sickle cell disease (SCD) can affect all ocular and orbital structures. Sickle cell retinopathy (SCR) is the most common ophthalmic manifestation of SCD. Fortunately, most individuals with SCR are visually asymptomatic. Vision loss in SCD most commonly occurs as a consequence of proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR), in which pathologic retinal neovascularization occurs. To prevent significant vision loss and blindness, which can occur from complications of PSR, regular retinopathy surveillance screening examinations and consistent follow-up with a reti
