Characteristics of fungaemia caused by Trichosporon species in South-Eastern Europe.

The incidence of fungaemia caused by rare yeasts, particularly Trichosporon species, is rising globally, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges-especially in immunocompromised patients. This systematic review aims to analyse the epidemiology, diagnostic approaches, antifungal susceptibility, and clinical outcomes of Trichosporon fungaemia (TF) in South-Eastern Europe, including Turkey. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus in August 2025. A total of 59 cases from 12 studies were identified, with Trichosporon asahii being the most prevalent species (86.4%). Cases origi

Characterization of flavor metabolites of cocultured fermented high acidity fruit wines, and the correlation between organic acids and esters.

High acidity is a major challenge in producing high-quality fruit wines, particularly those derived from Prunus mume (greengage). This study investigated the physicochemical properties, organic acids, and flavor profiles of high-acidity greengage wines fermented by four Saccharomyces yeasts, followed by coculture fermentation with Torulaspora delbrueckii to evaluate flavor modification. Among the single cultures, ScBV818 exhibited the strongest fermentation capacity, achieving an alcohol content of 13.27%, total acidity of 54.55 g L-1, and significantly enhanced levels of esters, aldehydes, an

Probiotics in Autoimmune Disease: Strain-specific Mechanisms and Therapeutic Perspectives.

The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in human health and is increasingly recognized as a potential therapeutic target for various diseases. Current standard-of-care treatments for autoimmune diseases often include immunosuppressive agents aimed at controlling immune activation and limiting tissue injury rather than solely suppressing autoantibody production. However, systemic immunosuppression can be associated with dose- and duration-dependent adverse effects, underscoring the need to explore adjunctive and alternative therapeutic strategies. This review summarizes the putative mechanisms

Evaluation of the antifungal potential of N, N chelating iridium(III) complexes.

Candida species are opportunistic yeasts and the leading cause of invasive fungal infections in hospitals. These infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality and impose a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems. Their severity is exacerbated by the limited number of effective therapeutics and the growing prevalence of antifungal resistance, underscoring the urgent need for agents with novel mechanisms of action. In this work, we synthesized two half-sandwich iridium(III) complexes with the general formula [Ir(η⁵-Cp*)Cl(N, N)]X, where the N, N-chelating ligand is 1,

Low Zoonotic Pathogen Burden in Free-Roaming Cats Revealed by 18S rRNA Metabarcoding: A Baseline Study from an Insular Natura 2000 Site in Spain.

Free-roaming cats may contribute to zoonotic risk via parasites and other eukaryotic taxa, yet surveillance in protected island settings is limited and conventional coprology can miss low-intensity or degraded signals. We conducted a cross-sectional 18S rRNA metabarcoding survey to establish a baseline profile of potentially pathogenic eukaryotes in community cats from La Graciosa (Natura 2000, Canary Islands, Spain) prior to large-scale antiparasitic interventions. We analysed 152 faecal samples, including fresh samples collected during a high-throughput TNR campaign (n = 37) and dry environm

Iteratively Designed Phospholipid-Targeted Supramolecular Sonosensitizers for Precision Treatment of Pulmonary Infections.

Fungal infections represent a significant global health threat, exacerbated by the scarcity of new therapeutic options, increasing drug resistance, and host toxicity. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) offers a promising approach to overcoming antimicrobial resistance by enabling the localized generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) within deep-seated lesions. Nevertheless, reports of SDT for in vivo antifungal treatment remain scarce, largely due to suboptimal ROS generation efficiency, poor biofilm penetration, and a lack of fungal specificity. Herein, we report the iterative design of

Clinical strains of Cryptococcus neoformans VNI non-wild type for azoles from Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil.

Cryptococcosis is a concerning fungal disease caused by encapsulated yeasts of the Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii species complexes, which can spread systemically, leading to meningitis with a high mortality. Treatment of cryptococcosis is a time-consuming process, relies on antifungals of limited distribution, and varies in effectiveness due to differing susceptibility profiles, particularly to azoles. This research aimed to evaluate the antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus spp. strains to amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole, and itraconazole, using clinical strains. Cryptococcu

Bacteriophages Improve the Effectiveness of Rhamnolipids in Combating the Biofilm of Candida albicans.

Biofilms formed by Candida albicans pose therapeutic challenges due to their resistance to conventional antimicrobials, highlighting the need for more effective treatments. Rhamnolipids (RLs) are biosurfactants with diverse antimicrobial properties. Bacteriophages are viruses that target specific bacterial strains. Recent studies have shown that they may affect biofilm formation by fungi and yeasts. This study investigated the combined antimicrobial effects of RLs and bacteriophages against C. albicans biofilms, focusing on their anti-adhesive and inhibitory effects on biofilm development. RT-

Influence of Ubiquitin Mutations over Molecular Markers Contributing to Pathogenesis of Candida albicans.

The emergence of Candida albicans as a life-threatening pathogen and its resistance to available antifungal drugs is a significant global health concern. Previous findings have established that the ubiquitin mutations UbEP42, UbL50P and UbI61T interfere with morphogenesis of C. albicans from commensal yeasts to pathogenic hyphae. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of ubiquitin mutations on the molecular markers of morphogenesis and virulence of C. albicans to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention. The auxotrophic strain BWP17 of C. albicans was t

Gastric Candidiasis in Five Horses: A Case Series.

Candida spp. are ubiquitous yeasts that are part of most mammals' microbiota and can become opportunistic pathogens under predisposing conditions. Interestingly, recent studies in human medicine report an increased abundance of Candida spp. in association with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Gastrointestinal candidiasis has been primarily reported in neonatal foals, but not in adult horses. The aim of this study is to describe the morphological, histopathological, and microbiological features of gastric lesions associated with Candida infiltration in five horses referred to two tertiary hosp

Flies use acetic acid to protect their offspring from parasitoids.

Plants and fungi often produce toxic metabolites, but herbivores and fungivores that evolve resistance to these toxins gain access to underutilized resources. An additional benefit of living in and consuming toxins is that animals can gain protection against non-resistant predators and parasites. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster consumes yeasts growing on rotting fruit and has evolved resistance to toxic fermentation products such as ethanol and acetic acid. We tested whether acetic acid protects flies from one of their most common natural enemies, parasitoid wasps, which infect fly larva

Travelers From the Intestine to the Skin: A Useful Clue to Diagnose a Cryptic Histoplasma Infection.

A 53-year-old woman from Missouri (United States) with a 2-year history of kidney transplant presented to our dermatology department with multiple acneiform lesions on the face and numerous erythematous papules and nodules on both arms and legs. Biopsies revealed a very atypical florid pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, at first interpreted, in light of the history of immunosuppression, as an invasive squamocellular carcinoma, associated with an unusual dense histiocytic infiltrate and nodular aggregates of foamy histiocytes. After the acute onset of fever, pancytopenia, and signs of ulcerativ

New and emerging drugs for the treatment of invasive fungal infections.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of invasive fungal infections (IFI) is increasing globally, with approximately 6,500,000 cases of IFI per year and 3,800,000 deaths. Most IFI deaths are attributable to opportunistic mycoses, such as Aspergillus and Candida. However, changes in climate and travel are leading to rising rates of endemic mycoses. Compounding this burden is the rise of antifungal drug resistance, requiring the development of new agents. AREAS COVERED: Data were identified using PubMed searches for the terms 'antifungal,' 'olorofim,' 'SUBA-itraconazole,' 'ibrexafungerp,' 'rezafungin,'
