[The effect of alpha-tocopherol on conditioned reflex activity in adrenaline-induced myocardial dystrophy in rats].

Adrenolytic heart defect (AHD) proceeds with the breaking of higher adaptational reactions, i.e. the change of latent period of conditioned active prevention reaction and arising of retrograde amnesia. alpha-Tocopherol--antioxidant prevents the breaking of conditioned reflex activity and sharply reduces the mortality rate in AHD. More effective is the prophylaxis of the brain function breaking and lethality.

Adaptation to telescopic spectacles: vestibulo-ocular reflex plasticity.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a mechanism for the production of rapid compensatory eye movements during head movements. To investigate the adaptation of this reflex to spectacle magnifiers, the effect on the VOR of a brief period of wearing telescopic spectacles during head rotation was studied in normal subjects. VOR gain, as measured in darkness, was defined to be the ratio of compensatory slow phase eye velocity to head velocity. Initial VOR gain as measured for vertical axis sinusoidal head rotation at 0.1 Hz, amplitude 60 degrees/sec, was about 0.7. After 15 min adaptation by sinus

Adaptation to low dietary calcium in magnesium-deficient rats.

To determine if adaptation to low calcium (Ca) diets is impaired by magnesium (Mg) deficiency, weanling rats were pair-fed control (700 mg Mg/kg diet) or low Mg (70 mg Mg/kg diet) diets containing 5000 mg Ca/g diet for 7 or 10 d. Half of the animals from each group were then killed; the remainder continued on their previous Mg intakes and were subjected to low (500 mg Ca/kg diet) dietary Ca for 7 or 15 d. After 10 d of Mg deficiency, rats fed adequate Ca were hypomagnesemic and hypercalcemic, relative to controls, and had elevated circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) but normal 1,25-dihydroxy

Protein-energy malnutrition in pregnant rats improves the adaptation of the endocrine pancreas in malnourished offspring and induces insulin resistance after rehabilitation.

1. In developing countries, malnutrition begins during pregnancy and lactation. Glucose intolerance is a problem of importance during protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). We therefore studied glucose homeostasis in rats weaned from undernourished mothers. 2. On weaning, 156 male Wistar rats, born from deprived mothers (75 g casein/kg diet), were fed ad lib on either a balanced diet (180 g casein/kg; group DR), or a protein-deficient diet (50 g casein/kg; group DD). At seven time intervals (weeks 0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 16 and 23) twelve rats were weighed, fasted overnight and then decapitated. Blood gluc

Functional properties of vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons.

The interaction of an odorant with the chemosensitive membrane of olfactory receptor neurons initiates a sequence of molecular and membrane events leading to sensory transduction, impulse initiation, and the transmission of sensory information to the brain. The main steps in this sequence are summarized in Figure 6. Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that the initial molecular events and subsequent stages of transduction are mediated by odorant receptor sites and associated ion channels located in the membrane of the cilia and apical dendritic knob of the olfactory receptor neuro

Instability of the patellofemoral joint in Down syndrome.

The knees of 210 institutionalized patients with Down syndrome were evaluated to determine the prevalence of patellofemoral instability and to assess the value of orthotic and surgical treatment. The cases of 151 non-institutionalized patients with Down syndrome were also reviewed. The patella was dislocatable or dislocated in thirty-five knees (8.3 per cent) in the institutionalized group and in twelve knees (4.0 per cent) in the non-institutionalized group. This interfered with walking in some patients, but only three of the patients were unable to walk because of patellofemoral instability.

Induction of protective immunity against Schistosoma mansoni by a non living vaccine. I. Partial characterization of antigens recognized by antibodies from mice immunized with soluble schistosome extracts.

A single intradermal injection of frozen and thawed schistosomula in conjunction with the bacterial adjuvant Mycobacterium bovis strain Bacille Calmette Guerin, Phipps substrain (BCG) induced significant levels of resistance to challenge Schistosoma mansoni infection in C57BL/6 mice. Immunization with the aqueous fraction remaining after 100,000 X G centrifugation of the larval lysate was also protective under these conditions, suggesting that some immunogenic determinants may not be membrane associated. Frozen-thawed cercariae and soluble components of adult worms also protected against chall

Structural adaptation to altered electrolyte metabolism by cortical distal segments.

The four different renal cell types in the cortical segments beyond the macula densa--distal convoluted tubule (DCT) cell, the connecting tubule (CNT) cell, the principal (P) cell, and the intercalated (I) cell--each respond to prolonged specific stimuli with changes in cell membrane area. Increases in basolateral cell membrane area, reflecting the transport capacity of the cell, are associated in DCT cells with luminal, chronically high sodium load, in CNT cells with mineralocorticoids and tubular solute load, and in P cells with mineralocorticoids. In I cells the luminal cell membrane area s

Thyroid function in nonthyroidal illnesses.

Alterations in thyroid physiology and thyroid function tests occur in some patients with nonthyroidal illnesses. Low concentrations of serum triiodothyronine (T3) usually occur in nonthyroidal illnesses and are attributable largely to reduced extrathyroidal conversion of thyroxine (T4) to T3. Concentrations of serum total T4 may be low, normal, or high; alterations in serum binding of T4 explain the abnormality in most cases. Concentrations of serum reverse T3 are usually high because metabolic clearance is reduced. Whether patients with nonthyroidal illnesses with low T4 or T3, or both, are h

[Reactivation of renin secretion by a contralateral kidney in the chronic phase of experimental renovascular hypertension].

When one renal artery is markedly narrowed, the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is only suppressed at the initial stage of vasorenal hypertension in the contralateral kidney, and is reactivated during the chronic stage as manifested in normalized or increased total tissue content of active renin, its enhanced secretion and its activity in the outflowing blood. This kidney's RAS begins to have a prevailing effect on systemic RAS, while that of the ischemized kidney makes a smaller contribution. Similar changes can be observed in some animals with a moderately narrowed renal artery.

Biochemical modulation of blood-brain barrier permeability.

Hydrophilic substrates necessary for brain function cross the capillary by facilitated diffusion. The facilitation has many features in common with enzyme-catalyzed reactions and is probably subserved by protein entities in the endothelial wall. The proteins act as receptors, recognizing substrate molecules, and as translocators, giving the molecules access to an aqueous path through the endothelium. These receptor-translocators can be saturated, and the transport is subject to competitive inhibition by substrate analogs. Thus, amino acids inhibit the transport of each other, and galactose can

Nausogenic properties of various dynamic and static force environments.

Motion sickness can occur when an accelerating force acting on the human body repeatedly changes amplitude and direction or both. It also can occur without any motion after transfer into a constant force field significantly different from Earth-gravity. Dynamic and static causes of motion sickness can be distinguished accordingly. Space sickness, too, has dynamic as well as static aspects. Dynamic space sickness might depend on increased bilateral differential sensitivity of the peripheral and central vestibular apparatus, whereas static space sickness may be caused by erroneous compensation o

Mineral Accumulation and Physiological Responses of Two Halophytes, Caroxylon vermiculatum and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum: Implications for Phytoremediation in Contaminated Coastal Environments.

Halophytes are recognized for their adaptive capacity and potential applications in phytomanagement and ecosystem restoration. This study investigates the comparative physiology and antioxidant responses of two native halophytes, Caroxylon vermiculatum (L.) and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum L., growing naturally in saline and metal-affected coastal environments. A comprehensive set of physiological and biochemical parameters was assessed, including macro- and microelements (Na, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cd), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids), soluble sugars, and protei
