The effect of a corticosteroid drug on type I reactions in the nose was studied in eighteen hay fever patients. They were treated with a daily dosage of 800 microng beclomethasone dipropionate intranasally for I week, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over trial. Allergen challenge on the last day of each treatment period showed that steroid treatment diminished sneezing and rhinorrhoea, but the effect was not statistically significant (P = 0-10). The term dyshidrosis describes a nonspecific tissue pattern reaction characterized by a noninflammatory, pruritic (and sometimes burning) intraepidermal vesicular dermatosis involving selected areas of the fingers, palms, and soles. A double-blind trial in twenty-nine patients with rosacea showed that, after 6 weeks' treatment, metronidazole was therapeutically superior to a placebo (P less than 0-02). It was particularly effective against papules and pustules. The mode of action of metronidazole and other antibiotics in rosacea is not known.

Nineteen patients with symmetrical ocular hypertension and symmetrical cupping of the optic nerves were made asymmetric with respect to intraocular pressure for one to five years by unilateral topical treatment with epinephrine hydrochloride. A report is made on 80 male patients aged 19-25 and suffering from common acne, who were treated with vitamin A acid (Eudyna) partly as inpatients and partly as outpatients. All stages were present from acne comedonica to acne conglobata. The preparation was available in the form of cream and jelly, each containing 0.05% tretinoin. As a rule, the drug was applied once daily. At the end of the tretinoin treatment lasting for a maximum of 9 weeks, a decrease in comedones of more than 90% is reported. Up to date, the treatment of palmar/plantar hyperkeratoses presents a therapeutic problem. The known therapeutic procedures result in short-term improvement only, if any at all. 15 patients with melasma were treated with betamethasone 17-valerate in a cream base containing DMSO. One patient with secondary pigmentation was also entered in the trial. In nine patients results were favourable and in three results were moderate. This effect could be ascribed to the steroid.

El Tor Ogawa C14-S5 and EW-6, two live vaccine candidate strains, were given to volunteers in varying doses with and without bicarbonate. BACKGROUND: Few studies have correlated maternal and neonatal Vit D (25(OH)D) levels at birth in Greece. We investigated this potential association, taking into account the administration or not of low doses (400-800 IU) of prenatal Vit D supplements.
