Developments in labour analgesia and their use in Australia.

Since the introduction of chloroform for labour analgesia in 1847, different methods and medications have been used to relieve the pain of labour. The use of heavy sedative medication in the early 1900s was encouraged by enthusiastic doctors and by women empowered by the women's suffrage movement in America. Nitrous oxide by inhalation has been used in Australia since the 1950s and improved methods of administration have made this method of analgesia safe and practical. Caudal epidural analgesia and lumbar epidural analgesia were first made popular in America and by the 1970s these techniques

Phylogeny-based classification of human rhinoviruses detected in hospitalized children with acute lower respiratory infection in Paraguay, 2010-2011.

Human rhinovirus (HRV), a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus, is associated with mild upper respiratory tract infections in children. The aim of this study was to carry out a molecular characterization and phylogeny-based classification of the circulating genotypes of HRV in hospitalized children with clinical manifestations of acute lower respiratory infection in Paraguay. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were collected from 101 children under 5 years of age, hospitalized with symptoms of acute lower respiratory infection, between May 2010 and December 2011, at the largest public pediatric hos

Resolving the roles of immunity, pathogenesis, and immigration for rabies persistence in vampire bats.

Bats are important reservoirs for emerging infectious diseases, yet the mechanisms that allow highly virulent pathogens to persist within bat populations remain obscure. In Latin America, vampire-bat-transmitted rabies virus represents a key example of how such uncertainty can impede efforts to prevent cross-species transmission. Despite decades of agricultural and human health losses, control efforts have had limited success. To establish persistence mechanisms of vampire-bat-transmitted rabies virus in Latin America, we use data from a spatially replicated, longitudinal field study of vampir

Replication of the LINGO1 gene association with essential tremor in a North American population.

A marker in the LINGO1 gene, rs9652490, showing significant genome-wide association with essential tremor (ET), was recently reported in an Icelandic population. To replicate this association in an independent population from North America, we genotyped 15 SNPs in the LINGO1 gene in 257 Caucasian ET cases ('definite,' 'probable' or 'possible') and 265 controls enrolled in an epidemiological study at Columbia University. We observed a marginally significant association with allele G of the marker rs9652490 (P=0.0569, odds ratio (OR)=1.33). However, for 'definite' or 'probable' ET, rs9652490 was

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Hypoderma lineatum.

Cutaneous myiasis is a temporary parasitic infestation of the skin of domestic and wild animals and occasionally of humans by the larvae of flies. Larvae of many flies from various geographic areas can cause myiasis: in Central and South America, human cutaneous myiasis is mainly caused by the larvae of Dermatobia hominis; in Africa, by the larvae of Cordylobia anthropophaga; in the northern hemisphere (North America, Europe, Africa and Asia), by the larvae of Hypoderma spp. A case of cutaneous myiasis in a 47-year-old woman, co-author of the present report, is described. She returned to Slove

Trypanosomosis in goats: current status.

Trypanosomosis is a major constraint on ruminant livestock production in Africa, Asia, and South America. The principal host species affected varies geographically, but buffalo, cattle, camels, and horses are particularly sensitive. Natural infections with Trypanosoma congolense, T. vivax, T. brucei, and T. evansi have been described in goats. Trypanosomosis in goats produces acute, subacute, chronic, or subclinical forms, being T. vivax, T. congolense, and T. evansi, the most invasive trypanosomes for goats. However, the role of goats in the epidemiology of trypanosomosis is largely discussed

[Neurocysticercosis: an imported disease?].

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is the CNS involvement caused by Taenia solium larvae and the most frequent cerebral parasitation. It has a cosmopolitan distribution but endemic in the low income countries. The paper analizes the geographic origin, clinical characteristics of patients and the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Retrospective revision of clinical files in patients with the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis between the period January 1990 to March 2000. RESULTS: Ten patients were included of which only one was of Spanish nationality. The others were immigr

Hyperbaric and hypobaric chamber fires: a 73-year analysis.

Fire can be catastrophic in the confined space of a hyperbaric chamber. From 1923 to 1996, 77 human fatalities occurred in 35 hyperbaric chamber fires, three human fatalities in a pressurized Apollo Command Module, and two human fatalities in three hypobaric chamber fires reported in Asia, Europe, and North America. Two fires occurred in diving bells, eight occurred in recompression (or decompression) chambers, and 25 occurred in clinical hyperbaric chambers. No fire fatalities were reported in the clinical hyperbaric chambers of North America. Chamber fires before 1980 were principally caused

[A case of Paget's disease with progressive sensorineural hearing loss involved in the bilateral bony labyrinths].

Paget's disease of the bone is a chronic, progressive disease of unknown etiology characterized by abnormal bony resorption and deposition. It is a common skeletal disease in Europe and North America, while in Japan it is very rare. Paget's disease of the temporal bone has been reported to cause hearing loss frequently. We report a 50-year-old woman with Paget's disease who had progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and right vestibular dysfunction. CT and 3 Dimensional CT (3D-CT) images demonstrated resorption of the entire bony labyrinth and its surroundings on both sides and that

Hearing Impairment Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

IMPORTANCE: Hearing impairment is common in adults, but few studies have addressed it in the US Hispanic/Latino population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of hearing impairment among US Hispanic/Latino adults of diverse backgrounds and determine associations with potential risk factors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) is a population-based sample of Hispanics/Latinos in four US communities (Bronx, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and San Diego, California). Examinations were conducted from 2008 through 201

Standardization and international multicenter validation of a PulseNet pulsed-field gel electrophoresis protocol for subtyping Shigella flexneri isolates.

Shigella flexneri is one of the agents most frequently linked to diarrheal illness in developing countries and often causes outbreaks in settings with poor hygiene or sanitary conditions. Travel is one of the means by which S. flexneri can be imported into developed countries, where this pathogen is not commonly seen. A robust and discriminatory subtyping method is needed for the surveillance of S. flexneri locally and regionally, and to aid in the detection and investigation of outbreaks. The PulseNet International network utilizes standardized pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) protocol
