Soils represent one of the largest and most diverse reservoirs of microbial life on Earth, yet their associated RNA viruses remain underexplored compared to animal and aquatic systems. Viral discovery in soils has been further limited by technical hurdles, particularly difficulties in obtaining sufficient yields of high-quality RNA for sequencing. To address this, we evaluated a range of storage and preservation strategies, including the use of commercial preservative solutions and ultra-cold snap-freezing, followed by standardized RNA extraction, sequencing, and virus discovery pipelines. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) remains a persistent zoonotic threat more than a decade after its first detection, with Saudi Arabia continuing to be the global epicenter of human infections and the main reservoir interface through dromedary camels. Despite ongoing surveillance, advances in molecular diagnostics, and research on vaccines and therapeutics, sporadic zoonotic spillovers and healthcare-associated outbreaks still occur, showing that current prevention strategies are still not enough. This review compiles current evidence from epidemiological studies, camel r

The ruminant gut microbiome is central to feed conversion efficiency, nutrient utilisation, and animal health, yet how pasture diversity and management shape its composition over time under real, working farm conditions remains poorly understood, as most previous studies have relied on short-term or more tightly controlled comparisons. A multi-year study (2022-2025) investigated gut microbial dynamics in cattle and sheep grazing on different pasture management systems; standard pastures under contemporary management (Std-Con), standard pastures under regenerative management (Std-Reg), diverse

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) exposure remains a major global public health concern, especially in low-resource countries where biomass fuels are commonly used for household energy. In these environments, extended indoor cooking and poor ventilation increase pregnant women's vulnerability to PM₂.₅ exposure. However, no study in Ethiopia has directly measured personal PM2.5 exposure among pregnant women. Therefore, this study aimed to assess personal PM₂.₅ exposure level and associated factors among pregnant women residing in rural Butajira, Ethiopia.
METHODS: A community-based l

Acoustic, olfactory, and visual predator cues trigger various adaptive responses among a variety of prey species even when they are under human protection since birth. Previous studies have found that domesticated animals show increased vigilance, stress, flight, and aggregation behaviors in response to predation threats. These investigations, however, did not directly test visual threatening cues alone in animals that communicate more with body language than vocalizations while considering individual temperament and social status. The current study aims to address this issue. Eighteen horses

UNLABELLED: Parainfluenza virus is a significant respiratory pathogen affecting both humans and animals, capable of causing acute respiratory tract infections in infants and immunocompromised individuals. Recently, parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) has been frequently detected in swine diarrheal samples. However, experimental infections revealed that PIV5 alone induces only mild clinical symptoms. Further analysis suggested that co-infection with porcine sapelovirus (PSV) may underlie the observed disease severity. This hypothesis was confirmed through animal studies. Co-infection was shown to occu

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f. [Celastraceae] glycosides (TWG) are used in RA treatment, but their dose-response relationship and involvement of the gut-lung axis in RA-ILD remain unclear.
METHODS: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was established in Wistar rats. Animals were assigned to normal control (NC), model, TWG-L (9 mg/kg), TWG-M (45 mg/kg), TWG-H (90 mg/kg), and prednisolone (Pred, 5 mg/kg) groups. Treatments were admini

Commercial pork production is practiced worldwide and represents a major source of protein for global populations. Pigs, however, are plagued by various diseases that affect their productivity. A common practice is to administer antibiotics in the feed to reduce infections and promote growth. However, antibiotic utilization in pig production has been identified as a source of spread of antibiotic resistance genes, prompting the need for antibiotic alternatives in swine production. Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) are two

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), continues to cause significant human disease, especially in endemic regions. Chronic carriers of typhoid fever are a significant contributor to the perpetuation of disease in these communities, and treatments for elimination of the carrier state remain a challenge to clinicians and researchers. S. Typhi is host-restricted to humans and has been shown to be rapidly cleared by immunocompetent mice, which led to the use of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium infection of susceptible mice as a model for S. Typhi and typhoid fever.

A diversified diet in early childhood that comprises plant and animal source foods contributes to better health outcomes throughout the life course. However, inadequate infant and young child-feeding practices are serious public health problems in Africa. Evidence on the magnitude and determinants of inadequate animal source food consumption (ASF) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is not yet well established. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the pooled magnitude and determinants of ASF consumption in SSA. A total weighted sample of 92,309 children aged 6-23 months from the Demographic and Health

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis poses a serious threat to human and animal health, particularly in developing countries such as China. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is one of the most severely brucellosis-endemic provinces in China. Currently, the host immune responses functioning to control Brucella infection and development remain poorly understood. The aim of this study is to further clarify the key immunity characteristics of diverse stages of brucellosis in Inner Mongolia.
METHODS: We collected a total of 733 blood samples from acute (n = 137), chronic (n = 316), inapparent (n = 35), reco

Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of Q fever, is an intracellular zoonotic pathogen transmitted via the respiratory route. Once released from infected animals, C. burnetii can travel long distances through air before infecting another host. As such, the ability to detect the presence of C. burnetii in air is important. In this study, three air samplers, AirPort MD8, BioSampler, and the Coriolis Micro, were assessed against a set of predetermined criteria in the presence of three different aerosolized C. burnetii concentrations. Two liquid collection media, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS

Antimicrobial resistance is a major public health concern worldwide affecting humans, animals and the environment. However, data is lacking especially in developing countries. Thus, the World Health Organization developed a One-Health surveillance project called Tricycle focusing on the prevalence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in humans, animals, and the environment. Here we present the first results of the human community component of Tricycle in Madagascar. From July 2018 to April 2019, rectal swabs from 492 pregnant women from Antananarivo, Mahajanga, Ambatondrazaka, and Toamasina were

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies and research on laboratory animals link radiofrequency radiation (RFR) with impacts on the heart, brain, and other organs. Data from the large-scale animal studies conducted by the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the Ramazzini Institute support the need for updated health-based guidelines for general population RFR exposure.
OBJECTIVES: The development of RFR exposure limits expressed in whole-body Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), a metric of RFR energy absorbed by biological tissues.
METHODS: Using frequentist and Bayesian averaging modeling of

Atorvastatin has been shown to be a safe and effective non-surgical treatment option for patients with chronic subdural hematoma. However, treatment with atorvastatin is not effective in some patients, who must undergo further surgical treatment. Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, and low dosages are safe and effective for the treatment of many diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis and community-acquired pneumonia. However, the effects of atorvastatin and low-dose dexamethasone for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma remain poorly understood. Hematoma s

BACKGROUND: Synovial membrane-derived factors are implicated in arthritis-related bone changes. The route that synovial factors use to access subchondral bone and the mechanisms responsible for these bone changes remain unclear. A safety study involving intra-articular injection of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2)/calcium phosphate matrix (CPM) or CPM addresses these issues.
METHODS: Knee joints in 21 monkeys were injected with CPM or 1.5 or 4.5 mg/mL BMP-2/CPM and were evaluated at 1 and 8 weeks. Contralateral joints were injected with saline solution. Knee joints in 4 animals each were

Vibrio cholerae is an aquatic Gram-negative bacterium that causes severe diarrheal cholera disease when ingested by humans. To eliminate competitor cells in both the external environment and inside hosts, V. cholerae uses the type VI secretion system (T6SS). The T6SS is a macromolecular contact-dependent weapon employed by many Gram-negative bacteria to deliver cytotoxic proteins into adjacent cells. In addition to canonical T6SS gene clusters encoded by all sequenced V. cholerae isolates, strain BGT49 encodes another locus, which we named auxiliary (Aux) cluster 4. The Aux 4 cluster is locate

Enriched environment (EE) with a complex combination of sensorimotor, cognitive and social stimulations has been shown to enhance brain plasticity and improve recovery of functions in animal models of stroke. The present study extended these findings by assessing whether the three-phase EE intervention paradigm would improve neurovascular remodeling following ischemic stroke. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). A three-phase EE intervention paradigm was designed in terms of the different periods of cerebral ischemia by periodically rear

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goals of this review are two folds: (1) to describe the recent understandings on the roles of calcitonin gene-related peptide-α (CGRP) in bone homeostasis and the underlying mechanisms of related neuronal regulation and (2) to propose innovative CGRP-modulated approaches for enhancing bone regeneration in challenging bone disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: CGRP is predominantly produced by the densely distributed sensory neuronal fibers in bone, declining with age. Under mechanical and biochemical stimulations, CGRP releases and exerts either physiological or pathophysiologica
