Perceived Race and Ethnicity on CT Use in Children With Minor Head or Abdominal Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether race or ethnicity is associated with computed tomography (CT) use in children after minor blunt head trauma (BHT) or blunt abdominal trauma (BAT). METHODS: This was a prospective secondary analysis of children (<18 years) with BHT and/or BAT at 6 pediatric trauma centers. Injury severity was assessed using the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network prediction rules. We performed multivariable logistic regression, controlling for site, age, sex, Social Deprivation Index, and injury severity. RESULTS: In total, 17 339 patients with BHT were enrolled.

Effects of a culturally tailored intervention on medication adherence in Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with hepatitis B: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Asian Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic hepatitis B (CHB), which is caused by infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). While adherence to antiviral medication is an effective practical approach to managing CHB and preventing liver cancer, medication adherence rates among Chinese and Vietnamese Americans with CHB, two vulnerable yet understudied populations, remain largely unknown. METHODS: We designed and implemented a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the potential improvement of long-term adherence to HBV medication in Asian American populat

Measuring Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis Use Relative to Sexually Transmitted Infection Rates at a San Francisco STI Clinic Reveals Racial Inequities in Disease Prevention Impact.

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) must reach people at high risk for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to reduce STI rates and inequities. PrEP-to-Need Ratios (PNR) identified inequities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by measuring PrEP prescriptions relative to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates. We evaluated a novel application of the PNR framework to doxyPEP for STIs to identify inequities in doxyPEP by race/ethnicity. METHODS: Using cross-sectional clinical and surveillance datasets, we compared doxyPEP use relative to STI diagnoses, a meas

Exploring the mediating role of blood metabolites in the relationship between gut microbiota and gastric cancer risk: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have established correlations between gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis, circulating metabolite alterations, and gastric cancer (GC) risk. However, the causal nature of these associations remains uncertain. METHODS: We utilized summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on GM (European, n=8,956), blood metabolites (European, n=120,241; East Asian, n=4,435), and GC (European, n=476,116; East Asian, n=167,122) to perform a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, investigating the causal effects of GM and metabolites on GC risk. Additionally, we c

Study protocol for low-dose evaluation of aspirin in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (LEAST): a multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin and ticagrelor is standard treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). While the optimal ticagrelor dose is established, the ideal aspirin maintenance dose remains debatable, particularly in East Asian populations who demonstrate enhanced bleeding sensitivity with standard antiplatelet regimens compared to Western populations. METHODS: The Low-dose Evaluation of Aspirin in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (LEAST) trial is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind

Racial and ethnic differences in the risks for reading difficulties across elementary school.

We investigated the early onset, over-time stability, and explanatory factors of racial and ethnic differences in the risks for reading difficulties including repeatedly across elementary school. We did so through analyses of a nationally representative cohort (N = 16,088). Fourteen percent, 17 %, and 14 % of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students compared to about 6 % and 8 % of White and Asian American students, respectively, displayed reading difficulties in kindergarten. Large differences continued to occur through fifth grade. About 26 % of Black, Hispanic, or Native American stude

Association of circulating omentin level and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is closely associated with omentin, a novel adipokine that plays a vital role in metabolic balance. The literature about the relationship between circulating omentin and MAFLD is conflicting. Therefore, this meta-analysis evaluated circulating omentin levels in patients with MAFLD compared with healthy controls to explore the role of omentin in MAFLD. METHODS: The literature search was performed up to April 8, 2022, using PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, CBM, Clinical Trials Database and Grey Literature Database. Thi

Perpetuating and protective factors in insomnia across racial/ethnic groups of veterans.

Few studies have examined racial/ethnic differences in rates and correlates of insomnia among veterans. This study compared rates of insomnia and interest in sleep treatment among veterans of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds. Consistent with the 3P model, we tested racial discrimination as a predictor of insomnia, with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and romantic partners as perpetuating and protective moderators of this association, respectively. A total of 325 veterans (N = 236 veterans of colour; 12% Asian, 36% Black, 14% Hispanic/Latine) completed questionnaires online from remote

Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn caused by anti-sD antibody in a GP.Mur/Mur Thai mother and review of the prevalence of sD in Thai blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Low-prevalence antigen sD (MNS23) is encoded by GYPB c.173C > G. Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to anti-sD is rare. A mother delivered a newborn whose red blood cells (RBCs) were DAT-positive and was later diagnosed with HDFN. Serum from the mother was incompatible with the father's RBCs and was used to screen 184 Thai blood donors. This study aimed to investigate the cause of HDFN in a Thai family and determine the prevalence of sD in Thai blood donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three family members and four blood donors were investigated in the study. Massive

Demographic factors associated with length of stay in hospital and histological diagnosis in adults undergoing appendicectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Appendicectomy remains of the most common emergency operations in the United Kingdom. The exact etiologies of appendicitis remain unclear with only potential causes suggested in the literature. Social deprivation and ethnicity have both been demonstrated to influence outcomes following many operations. There are currently no studies evaluating their roles with regards to severity and outcomes following appendicectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Demographic data were retrieved from health records for adult patients who underwent appendicectomy between 2010-2016 within a single NHS trust
