Recent developments in organoid technology are revolutionizing our knowledge about the biology, physiology, and function of various organs. Female reproductive biology and medicine also benefit from this technology. Organoids recapitulate features of different reproductive organs including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, as well as trophoblasts. The genetic stability of organoids and long-lasting commitment to their tissue of origin during long-term culture makes them attractive substitutes for animal and in vitro models. Despite current limitations, organoids offer a promising platf

To better evaluate HIV-1 vaccines and therapeutics, the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control of China developed a panel of HIV-1 pseudoviruses including 462 viral strains derived from China, covering the majority of contemporaneous subtypes and circulating recombinant forms. Compared with the standard pseudovirus panels derived from other countries/regions, the Chinese isolates are more susceptible to neutralization by the sera obtained in China, revealing the strain/subtype specificity. Some of these pseudoviruses have already been used for the evaluation of HIV vaccines and drug can

: The opioid epidemic has brought with it an increasing focus on the incidence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) (also known as Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome) in neonates prenatally exposed to opioids, and recently, in the putative long-term effects of NAS on child development. The purpose of the present paper is three-fold: (1) outline shortcomings regarding the current research relating NAS to child development; (2) propose solutions to minimize these shortcomings; and (3) recommend an alternative conceptual framework to understanding developmental problems in later childhood presu

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) classification separates vascular anomalies into vascular malformations and vascular tumors. However, misdiagnoses and misperceptions still persist around the use of the term "hemangioma." We assessed whether the term "haemangioma" (British spelling) was used as part of ISSVA terminology in the literature.
METHODS: We searched PubMed for all English-language publications containing the British spelling "haemangioma" in the title or abstract from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016. Each paper was jud

The 2013-2016 epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) that originated in West Africa underscored many of the challenges to conducting clinical research during an ongoing infectious disease epidemic, both in the most affected countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, as well as in the United States and Europe, where a total of 27 patients with EVD received care in biocontainment units. The Special Pathogens Research Network (SPRN) was established in the United States in November 2016 to provide an organizational structure to leverage the expertise of the 10 Regional Ebola and Other Special

BACKGROUND: Inherent to clinical research is the informed consent process, with the informed consent form (ICF), a key component of human participant protections. We wished to examine whether a shortened and simplified ICF, accompanied by an appendix, improved participant understanding of a study compared with a conventional ICF.
METHODS: A shortened ICF was developed from an existing conventional ICF for a neonatal study. Either the shortened or conventional ICF was randomly distributed to members of two parental advocacy groups. Participants answered survey questions about the form they rec

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review summarizes research on the use of sheep and goats as large animal models of human osteoporosis for preclinical and translational studies.
RECENT FINDINGS: The most frequent osteoporotic sheep model used is the ovariectomized sheep with 12 months post-operatively or more and the combined treatment of ovariectomized sheep associated to calcium/vitamin D-deficient diet and glucocorticoid applications for 6 months, but other methods are also described, like pinealectomy or hypothalamic-pituitary disconnection in ovariectomized sheep. The goat model for osteoporo

Diverse groups of factors are leading to increased weight gain and obesity, such as certain genetic phenotypes, neuroendocrine disturbances, the administration of some drugs, behavioral, social and environmental factors. The progressively escalating rates of overweight and obesity worldwide have led to an introduction of a new term "globesity". Excessive accumulation of body fat and especially of visceral adipose tissue is the main predisposing factor for the development of metabolic syndrome and other obesity related co-morbidities. At the present moment only few pharmacotherapeuticals are us

After more than 28,000 Ebola virus disease cases and at least 11,000 deaths in West Africa during the 2014⁻2016 epidemic, the world remains without a licensed vaccine or therapeutic broadly available and demonstrated to alleviate suffering. This deficiency has been felt acutely in the two, short, following years with two Ebola virus outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and a Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda. Despite billions of U.S. dollars invested in developing medical countermeasures for filoviruses in the antecedent decades, resulting in an array of preventative, diagnostic

A critically important gap in knowledge surrounds the health consequences of exposure to radiation received gradually over time. Much is known about the health effects of brief high-dose exposures, such as from the atomic bombings in Japan, but the concerns today focus on the frequent low-dose exposures received by members of the public, workers, and, as addressed in this paper, astronauts. Additional guidance is needed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for planning long-term missions where the rate of radiation exposure is gradual over years and the cumulative amount

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is an inherited renal disease characterized by bilateral renal cyst formation. ADPKD is one of the most common rare disorders, accounting for ~10% of all patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ADPKD is a chronic disorder in which the gradual expansion of cysts that form in a minority of nephrons eventually causes loss of renal function due to the compression and degeneration of the surrounding normal parenchyma. Numerous deranged pathways have been identified in the cyst-lining epithelia, prompting the design of potential therapies. S

Microfracture of cartilage defects may induce alterations of the subchondral bone in the mid- and long-term, yet very little is known about their onset. Possibly, these changes may be avoided by an enhanced microfracture technique with additional application of bone marrow aspirate. In this study, full-thickness chondral defects in the knee joints of minipigs were either treated with (1) debridement down to the subchondral bone plate alone, (2) debridement with microfracture, or (3) microfracture with additional application of bone marrow aspirate. At 4 weeks after microfracture, the loss of s

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endothelial cells dysfunctions are crucial determinants of several human diseases. We review here the most recent reports on endothelial cell defects in cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs), particularly focusing on adherens junctions. CCM is a vascular disease that affects specifically the venous microvessels of the central nervous system and which is caused by loss-of-function mutation in any one of the three CCM genes (CCM1, 2 or 3) in endothelial cells. The phenotypic result of these mutations are focal vascular malformations that are permeable and fragile causing neu

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease is the most frequent congenital malformation in humans and affects almost 1 % of all newborns. Thanks to advances in diagnostics and treatment, over 90 % of those affected reach adulthood today. Patient numbers are therefore growing constantly. The majority of those affected, however, remain chronically ill throughout life and require continuous specialized care. The spectrum of different clinical pictures is vast. Since this is a relatively young patient group, both research and care are lacking relevant knowledge and experience.
OBJECTIVE: The Competence
