Hydatidosis is an anthropozoonosis mainly encountered in pastoral areas. It mostly affects the liver, lung, and rarely the bone and the soft tissues. Skeletal involvement is usually secondary to visceral hydatidosis. We report a case of a 49-year-old man presenting with one-year history of a progressive left hip pain. On local examination, there was tenderness in the left gluteal region with reduction in the hip range of motion. Pelvic X-ray revealed an expansive bone destruction involving the left hemi pelvis without periosteal reaction. A magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple cystic les

Bone cystic echinococcosis is rare disease and its management remain difficult to treat due to frequent recurrences, related to certain locations such as proximal femur and ilium, where radical surgery is difficult to achieve. Medical therapy using Mebendazol can be an ultimate way to insure stabilization and remission of the parasitosis. We present a case of a 37-year-old male who had complaints of pain in left hip and limp four years after surgical management of pertrochanteric fracture of his right lower limb. The first clinical and radiological diagnosis was osteoarthritis of proximal femu

BACKGROUND: Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare benign lesion of vascular origin with a pathological characteristic of multiple blood-filled cavities in the liver parenchyma. It is commonly misdiagnosed due to its lack of specificity in clinical presentation and laboratory test results. Herein, a case of a patient with PH who was misdiagnosed with hepatic echinococcosis before operation to remove the lesions was analyzed, with an emphasis on the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of PH.
CASE SUMMARY: We outline the case of a 40-year-old Chinese female who was admit

Clinical presentation of liver hydatidosis can vary from asymptomatic forms to lethal complications. We report herein a rare case of a 27-year-old male from a rural Tunisian region who presented with large-abundance haematemesis, haemodynamic instability, and marked biological data of hypersplenism. Endoscopy showed bleeding esophageal varicose veins that were ligated. Abdominal ultrasound concluded the presence of three type CE2 hydatic liver cysts causing portal cavernoma with signs of portal hypertension. Despite resuscitation, the patient died of massive rebleeding leading to haemorrhagic

The peritoneum is a unique serosal membrane, which can be the site of primary tumors and, more commonly, secondary pathologic processes. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common malignant condition to affect the peritoneal cavity, and the radiologist plays an important role in making the diagnosis and assessing the extent of disease, especially in sites that may hinder surgery. In this review, we address the role of the radiologist in the setting of peritoneal pathology, focusing on peritoneal carcinomatosis as this is the predominant malignant process, followed by revising typical imaging

This 8-year (from 2008 to 2016) retrospective study calculated the percentage of carcass and organ (lung and liver) condemnations and estimated the direct financial costs at four slaughterhouses in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Southeastern Iran. Each carcass and organ (lung and liver) was thoroughly examined through inspection, palpation and incision following the standard protocol. Identification of the parasites was performed macroscopically. The total direct economic loss due to meat's condemnation was estimated by adding weights of each organ or carcass part and multiplying individual orga

OBJECTIVE: CD8+ T cells can participate in immune action by secreting various cytokines, which have a killing effect on certain viruses, tumor cells, and other antigenic substances. However, in studies such as chronic viral infections and some parasitic infections, CD8+ T lymphocyte showed functional depletion, and its immune dysfunction was an important reason for the persistence of infection. Tim-3 has been shown to be a negative regulator of CD8+ T cell function, causing depletion of CD8+ T cells in cancer and chronic infection. However, the relationship between Tim-3 and CD8+ T cells in Ec

The cestode Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of a severe zoonotic disease: alveolar echinococcosis (AE). The parasite is distributed over a vast area in northern Eurasia and North America, but the impact of AE on human health is highly uneven between different regions. One hypothetical reason for this difference in virulence may be the genetic structure of E. multilocularis which-based on mitochondrial sequences and EmsB microsatellite profiles-forms four distinct clades. These clades correspond approximately to their continents of origin: Asia, Europe, and North America, wit

A key element to understanding parasite epidemiology is assessing their prevalence in the respective wild reservoir hosts. The tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis circulates between canid species (definite hosts) and small mammals (mostly rodents; intermediate hosts). Prevalence rates of Echinococcus multilocularis in the intermediate host are most exclusively determined through macroscopic examination of the liver generally followed by molecular or histological diagnostic for parasite species confirmation. The overall objective of the study was to investigate the suitability of Real-Time PCR

Echinococcus multilocularis eggs are deposited on the ground with the faeces of the carnivore definitive hosts. A reliable assessment of the spatial distribution of E. multilocularis eggs in environments used by humans is crucial for the prevention of alveolar echinococcosis (AE). This study was conducted in 192 rural and 71 urban vegetable gardens in AE endemic areas of north-eastern France. Its objective was to explore the relationship between the spatial distribution of E. multilocularis estimated from the collection and molecular analysis of two types of samples: faeces and soil. A total o

Introduction: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a rare parasitic disease caused by the infection of Echinococcus multilocularis. AE may mimic malignancy both in clinical presentation and radiological imaging, which is often misdiagnosed as metastatic tumor. Recently, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies are increasingly being used to address a diverse range of biological questions. Here, we describe a rare case of alveolar echinococcosis diagnosed by pan-pathogen screening, using next-generation sequencing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of AE which was de

Substance P binds to the Neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptors found in the emetic center of the central nervous system (CNS) to induce emesis. Maropitant is a selective NK-1 receptor antagonist that inhibits the binding of substance P to NK-1 receptors and is commonly used to prevent and treat vomiting in dogs. This review study aimed to discuss and analyze the therapeutic potential of substance P (Neurokinin-1 receptor) antagonist with a particular focus on the drug maropitant in canine medicine. A systematic literature review was performed to identify the existing literature on the subject during t

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Cardiac involvement is rare especially without liver and lungs tissue involvement. We describe a 12-year-old male patient referred to Mofid Children's Hospital, Tehran, Iran in Jul 2020 due to chronic pericardial effusion and suspected tuberculosis infection from Afghanistan. Echocardiography revealed a cystic lesion in the interventricular septum. Thoracic and abdominal computed tomography showed no similar cystic lesion in the lungs and liver. The patient underwent open-heart surgery for cystectomy and medical treatm

INTRODUCTION: Osseous hydatidosis is a rare condition most commonly involving the spine. Among spinal segments, sacrococcygeal involvement is even rarer. Moreover, the lesion is more prone to recurrence owing to the infiltrative nature of microvesicular lesions involving the spine. In this case report, we describe an effective multimodal management approach toward the management of primary sacrococcygeal cystic echinococcosis.
CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old female presented with complaints of severe back pain and urinary incontinence for 3 months. She presented with a slow-onset cauda equina synd
