Hypogyrification and its association with cognitive impairment in children with 22q11.2 deletion Syndrome: A preliminary report.

22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22qDS) is a neurogenetic disorder resulting in cognitive deficits and hypogyrification, but relationships between these processes have not been established. 22qDS youth and healthy controls (HC) were administered a battery of cognitive tasks. Gyrification measurements were extracted from structural T1 scans using Freesurfer, contrasted between groups, and correlated to cognition. Data was adjusted for age, sex, socio-economic status and intracranial volume. 22qDS displayed significant hypogyrification which was associated with poorer executive functioning and verbal

[Presbyacusis].

In the world, the spread of hearing loss due to age is an important socio-medical problem. Age-related hearing loss is the result of the biological process of aging of the tissue elements of the auditory analyzer. Changes in hearing develops by a complex of factors associated with both genetic, environmental and social aspects. Presbycusis is one of the causes of human cognitive disorders. Recent studies on hearing impairment prove a correlation with cognitive processes that increase the risk of dementia in the elderly. Timely rehabilitation of hearing with the use of hearing aids allows you t

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors need both cardiological and neurological rehabilitation!

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Most survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) suffer from cardiologic symptoms and approximately half of them experience cognitive problems because of hypoxic brain damage. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are also common. This review aims to give an overview of recent literature on rehabilitation treatment aiming at improvement of quality of life after OHCA. RECENT FINDINGS: Existing cognitive screening tools are now validated for OHCA survivors. OHCA patients with cognitive deficits may have lower exercise capacity. Cardiac rehabilitation seems to be well tole

[Mild cognitive impairment as a heterogeneous condition: From diagnostic algorithm - to individualized therapeutic approaches].

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prevalent syndrome affecting approximately 10-15% of the global population. In the Russian Federation, the estimated number of individuals with MCI may reach 5 million, with continued growth projected. Subjective cognitive deficits are linked to an increased risk of dementia, although memory complaints are often regarded as a normal aspect of aging. Standard neuropsychological assessments, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Mini-Cog, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), often lack sufficient sensitivity to detect MCI, particularly in i

GLP-1 at the Metabolic-Cognitive Interface: Reward, Affect, and Memory.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a nutrient-responsive hormone classically associated with glucose homeostasis and food intake control, yet its receptor is broadly expressed throughout the central nervous system (CNS) in circuits governing complex cognitive processes. Here, we synthesize emerging evidence from preclinical models and human studies demonstrating that GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) signaling modulates multiple cognitive domains, including reward and motivational processes relevant to obesity and substance use disorder, affective-related behaviors, and learning and memory. We propose a

Association Between Changes in Perceived Neighborhood and Cognitive Performance Within Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS) Black Adults.

Perceived neighborhood characteristics are related to cognitive performance. However, limited studies have examined how changes in neighborhood characteristics relate to cognitive performance, particularly among Black adults who are likely to experience changes in their residential social and physical environments. This study examined the association between changes in perceived neighborhood quality and concurrent, cross-sectional cognitive performance. An analytic sample of 592 Black adults (Mage = 56.22; 58% female) recruited from 13 predetermined neighborhoods in Baltimore City, Maryland, f

Neural and Behavioral Markers of Negative Symptoms and Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Psychosis.

Negative and cognitive symptoms impair functioning in patients with psychotic illnesses [i.e., schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZ) and bipolar I disorder with psychotic features (BD)]. Disruptions in mesocorticolimbic circuitry are hypothesized to underpin negative symptoms and cognitive impairment in patients with psychosis and may also facilitate reward-motivational deficits. In male and female patients with psychosis (N = 44) and healthy controls (HC = 27), we used neuroimaging to define gray matter morphology and white matter microstructure. We examined negative symptom severity with the

Cerebellar GluN2C protects against sleep deprivation-induced cognitive impairment and motor incoordination.

Sleep loss, particularly long-term sleep insufficiency or clinical sleep disorders, is a global health problem that affects millions of people and has been linked to accelerated cognitive decline and increased dementia risk. The cerebellum, traditionally viewed as a motor-control center, is now recognized to modulate emotion, cognition and sleep. Emerging evidence indicates that the cerebellum exhibits sleep stage-dependent activity and is closely associated with learning and memory processes. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit GluN2C is highly expressed in cerebellar granule cel

Ketamine's Influence on Magnetoencephalography Patterns During a Working Memory Task in Treatment-Resistant Depression: An Exploratory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains a challenge, necessitating novel interventions that address associated cognitive deficits. The glutamatergic modulator ketamine exerts rapid antidepressant effects, prompting investigators to assess its impact on cognitive function, specifically working memory. This study explored ketamine's influence on working memory and magnetoencephalography (MEG) patterns during a working memory task in individuals with TRD. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of ketamine on working memory, attention, and concentration, and to study MEG patterns d

Microglial Modulation as a Therapeutic Avenue for Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorders: Unveiling Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) encompass a spectrum of cognitive impairments that arise from the preoperative phase and can persist for months after surgery, with a prevalence of up to 50% in elderly patients. These disorders, including postoperative delirium and sustained cognitive decline, significantly reduce patient quality of life and impose substantial burdens on healthcare systems. Despite extensive research, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain inadequately understood, limiting the development of effective treatments. Increasing evidence highlig

Sex differences in the affective-cognitive dimension of neuropathic pain: Insights from the spared nerve injury rat model.

Over 40% of neuropathic pain patients experience mood and cognitive disturbances, often showing reduced response to analgesics, with most affected individuals being female. This highlights the critical role of biological sex in pain-related affective and cognitive disorders, making it essential to understand the emotional and cognitive circuits linked to pain for improving treatment strategies. However, research on sex differences in preclinical pain models is lacking. This study aimed to investigate these differences using the spared nerve injury (SNI) rat model, conducting a comprehensive se

Objective sleep data as predictors of cognitive decline in dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) prognosis depends on cognitive function evolution. Sleep disorders, as objectivated by polysomnography (PSG), are intimately connected with PD and DLB pathophysiology, but have seldomly been used to predict cognitive decline. METHODS: 20 DLB and 49 PD patients underwent one-night in-lab video-PSG. Sleep variables were defined, including REM sleep motor events, Tonic and phasic REM sleep muscular tone and RBD diagnosis. Cognitive state (assessed with the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) was collected from case files for

The association between cognitive coping strategies and treatment outcomes in smokers with PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous researchers have suggested that certain coping styles (e.g., maladaptive cognitive coping strategies) interfere with recovery from traumatic experiences and contribute to the onset/maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, given that individuals with PTSD have a high rate of smoking (e.g., Mahaffey et al., 2016) and that maladaptive coping strategies in general are associated with lower smoking quit rates, it is possible that use of maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are particularly problematic for the recovery of smokers with PTSD. The present stu

Carbamoylated erythropoietin modulates cognitive outcomes of social defeat and differentially regulates gene expression in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus.

Cognitive deficits are widespread in psychiatric disorders and frequently as debilitating as the affective component. Widely prescribed antidepressants for treating depressive disorders have limited efficacy in normalizing cognitive function. Erythropoietin (Epo) has been shown to improve cognitive function in schizophrenia and treatment resistant depressed patients. However, the potent elevation of red blood cell counts by Epo can cause hematological complications in non-anemic patients. We investigated a chemically engineered, posttranslational modification of Epo, carbamoylation, which rend

Cognitive Control, Learning, and Clinical Motor Ratings Are Most Highly Associated with Basal Ganglia Brain Volumes in the Premanifest Huntington's Disease Phenotype.

OBJECTIVES: Huntington's disease (HD) is a debilitating genetic disorder characterized by motor, cognitive and psychiatric abnormalities associated with neuropathological decline. HD pathology is the result of an extended chain of CAG (cytosine, adenine, guanine) trinucleotide repetitions in the HTT gene. Clinical diagnosis of HD requires the presence of an otherwise unexplained extrapyramidal movement disorder in a participant at risk for HD. Over the past 15 years, evidence has shown that cognitive, psychiatric, and subtle motor dysfunction is evident decades before traditional motor diagnos
