The electroacoustic characteristics of an experimental master hearing aid are determined by the choice of transducers and settings of 26 controls which include a preamplifier, the gains and limiting levels in each of 12 channels as well as the gain of a final power amplifier. Here, a computer program which aids in the fitting of the electroacoustic characteristics of this aid to the characteristics of a patient's residual hearing is described. An evaluation of Betahistine hydrochloride treatment of 92 patients suffering from Menière disease and Menière-like syndrom is presented. Observed for more than one year 54 (89%) patients showed complete relief of vertigo-attack symptoms. 7 (12%) patients showed a distinct improvement in their hearing as reflected in their audiograms, only 7 (12%) patients showed a further loss of hearing. The history and current misusage of the term presbycusis is discussed and current knowledge of pathology associated with presbycusis and aging are reviewed. A study involving retrospective analysis of audiometric data and clinical information on three groups was performed. Results suggest that a group of individuals previously identified as "presbycusic" probably represent undiagnosed cases of familial or genetic related hearing loss. Four or more generations of three Oklahoma-Kansas families in which multiple members have been found to have glomerulonephritis or interstitial nephritis have been studied. Twenty-five of 146 members in kindred A, 16 of 50 members in kindred B, and 33 of 156 members in kindred C were identified as probably to definitely afflicted. Abnormalities of the cochlear portion of the bony labyrinth may often be suspected but are inadequately demonstrated by conventional tomography in the antero-posterior position. Further views are necessary. The authors demonstrate this by means of a comparison between tomographic and histological sections of the inner ear of an anencephalic with a unilateral Mundini defect. Submento-vertical tomograms give a good demonstration of the cochlea.

The effect of obturator treatment of cleft palate on middle ear disease and hearing loss has not been established. This study serves as an otologic and audiologic review of a previously reported adult population with cleft palate. A substantial improvement in hearing levels subsequent to obturation was demonstrated; however, it was believed to be based on stabilization of pathologic features of the ear with age. A lightweight accelerometer has been used to obtain a waveform related to the glottal acoustic output when attached to the neck of a speaker, and to provide an indication of acoustic coupling to the nasal cavities when attached to the external surface of the nose. Examples of signals produced by the accelerometer are shown, and possible clinical applications are discussed.
