BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Few studies have investigated the feasibility of using pudendal neuromodulation to regulate bladder function in spinal cord-injured (SCI) animals. The present study aimed to determine the effects of electrical activation of the pudendal sensory branch on improving voiding functions in rats 6 weeks after a spinal cord injury and to explore the underlying neuromodulatory mechanisms.
METHODS: Two urodynamic measurements were used to assess the effects of electrical stimulation (ES) on bladder and urethral functions: simultaneous recordings of the intravesical pressure (IVP) d

PURPOSE: We determined whether transfer of a primarily motor nerve (femoral) to the anterior vesicle branch of the pelvic nerve would allow for more effective bladder reinnervation than transfer of a primarily sensory nerve (genitofemoral).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 41 female mongrel dogs underwent bladder decentralization and then bilateral nerve transfer, or served as sham operated or unoperated controls. Decentralization was achieved by bilateral transection of all sacral roots that induced bladder contraction upon electrical stimulation. Retrograde neuronal labeling dye was inject

Neural activity often becomes rhythmic during mental processing. But there has been no direct proof that rhythmicity, per se, is important for mental function. We assessed this issue in relation to the contribution of hippocampal theta-frequency rhythmicity to learning in the Morris water maze by blocking theta (and other septal inputs to the hippocampus) and then using electrical stimulation to restore rhythmicity. We injected tetracaine into the medial septal area, and so blocked septal input to the hippocampus in rats throughout 16 consecutive trials in a Morris water maze. Rats with no hip

OBJECTIVE: The mechanisms underlying chronic pain after whiplash injury are usually unclear. Injuries may cause sensitization of spinal cord neurons in animals (central hypersensitivity), which results in increased responsiveness to peripheral stimuli. In humans, the responsiveness of the central nervous system to peripheral stimulation may be explored by applying sensory tests to healthy tissues. The hypotheses of this study were: (1) chronic whiplash pain is associated with central hypersensitivity; (2) central hypersensitivity is maintained by nociception arising from the painful or tender

When botulinum toxin (BT) is administered for the first time at fixed doses, variable clinical responses can be observed in patients with the same form of dystonic disorder. Many factors may contribute to this phenomenon, including the variability rate of absorption of the drug. Animal experimental models (rat diaphragm preparation) have demonstrated an increased absorption of BT in the terminal nerve endings of the muscle under repetitive electrical stimulation, suggesting that "muscle activity" also may play an important role. The aim of our study was to evaluate in humans the role of the mu

INTRODUCTION: Headache is thought to be generated by nociceptive processes within the meninges, followed by activation of trigeminal neurons within the brainstem. The noxious stimuli initially involved in these nociceptive processes are unknown. A preparation was developed in the barbiturate-anesthetized rat, in which the activation of trigeminal brain stem neurons by selective local stimulation of the dura mater could be observed.
METHODS: The dura mater encephali was exposed by trepanizing the parietal bone up to the sagittal superior sinus. The surface of the dura was stimulated with elect

Effects of fenoldopam, a selective DA1 dopamine receptor agonist, and dipropyl dopamine and propylphenethyl dopamine, preferential DA2 dopamine receptor agonists, on ganglion transmission were studied in pentobarbital-anesthetized, open-chest dogs. Tachycardia induced by electrical stimulation (supramaximal voltage, 0.5 ms duration, 1-2 Hz) of the preganglionic cardio-accelerator nerves was monitored as a measure of ganglionic transmission. Drugs were injected into the costocervical artery (i.a.) close to the arterial supply of the ganglion. Doses required to produce 30-40% inhibition of gangl

We have performed single unit analysis of the activity of cells located in the ventral nuclear group of thalamus in a patient with dysesthetic pain below the level of a clinically complete traumatic spinal cord transection at C5. Cells located in the parasagittal plane 14 mm lateral to the midline responded to tactile stimulation in small facial and intraoral receptive fields, which were characteristic of patients without somatosensory abnormality [30]. In this patient the 16 mm lateral parasagittal plane contained cells with receptive fields located on the occiput and neck instead of the uppe

The proliferation of wireless communications, high-power microwave (HPM) sources, radar, and other microwave technology has necessitated research into potential HPM bioeffects. Here we present a multi-physics simulation study to probe the possible generation of thermoacoustic pressure waves from incident electromagnetic pulses, in a layered dielectric representation of the human head. The model is designed to offer flexibility with customizable pulse length, rise and fall times, repetition rates, applied electric field value, and user-defined directional orientation. Our results suggest that p

This article challenges the dominant interpretation of early twentieth-century vibrators as inherently sexual objects. Rather than reading vibrators retrospectively through the lens of the modern sex toy industry, it examines hand-cranked and early electric devices from the perspective of design, use, and medical context. Drawing on artifacts, manuals, advertisements, and medical literature from Britain and the United States, the article argues that early vibrators were shaped primarily by therapeutic and cosmetic practices linked to massage medicine, gynecological therapy, and orificial philo

Self-powered dressings based on triboelectric or piezoelectric systems generate alternating electric stimulation (ES) that induces M1-type macrophage polarization and exacerbates inflammation, limiting therapeutic efficacy. Here, we report a self-powered dressing integrating portable perovskite solar cells to deliver direct ES that activates anti-inflammatory M2-type macrophage polarization, thereby regulating immune responses and reshaping infected-wound microenvironments. Under optimized conditions (130 mV/mm, 30 min), solar cell-derived ES combined with antimicrobial peptide-loaded silk fib

Smart patches based on multimodal wearable devices enable real-time physiologic monitoring and proactive interventions to promote wound healing. Herein, we describe a biodegradable wearable electrotherapy patch (E-patch) that integrates noninvasive self-powered electrical stimulation (ES) therapy for tissue regeneration and a multiplexed electrochemical biosensor array for continuous monitoring of wound status. Custom-developed supercapacitor arrays (SCs) supply stable energy for ES, and constructed wearable biosensors enable sensitive monitoring of biomarkers in the wound exudate. As-fabricat

Increased risk of bone fracture due to bone mineral density (BMD) loss is a serious consequence of spinal cord injury (SCI). Traditionally, pharmaceutical approaches, such as bisphosphonates, have been prescribed to prevent bone loss. However, there is controversy in the literature regarding efficacy of these medications to mitigate the drastic bone loss following SCI. Individuals with SCI are particularly at risk of osteoporosis because of the lack of ambulation and weight bearing activities. In the past two decades, functional electric stimulation (FES) has allowed for another approach to tr

Electric Extradural Motor Cortex Stimulation (EMCS) is a neurosurgical procedure suggested for treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). We report two PD patients treated by EMCS, who experienced worsening of motor symptoms and cognition 5 years after surgery, when EMCS batteries became discharged. One month after EMCS restoration, they experienced a subjective improvement of motor symptoms and cognition. Neuropsychological assessments were carried out before replacement of batteries (off-EMCS condition) and 6 months afterward (on-EMCS condition). As compared to off-EMCS co

The article presents the results of studying the effectiveness of the complex vestibular workouts based on non-invasive neuromodulation technology in 37 healthy patients aged 18-20 years who have symptoms of aerial sickness in 5 or less minutes. Non-invasive neuromodulation wire-familiarize with the apparatus for vestibular rehabilitation "Brain-Port" (USA), performing electric tactile stimulation of the tongue with biofeedback. An indicator of statokinetic stability was considered from time to tolerance to the vestibular load up to development of vegetative manifestations of aerial sickness.

Through the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) individuals with paraplegia can regain lost walking function. However, due to the rapid onset of muscle fatigue, the walking duration obtained with an FES-based neuroprosthesis is often relatively short. The rapid muscle fatigue can be compensated for by using a hybrid system that uses both FES and an active orthosis. In this paper, we demonstrate the initial testing of a semi-active hybrid walking neuroprosthesis. The semi-active hybrid orthosis (SEAHO) supports a user during the stance phase and standing while the electric mo

In isolated detrusor strips, propiverine is known to be effective to decrease contractions elicited by electric field stimulation (EFS). Here we investigated whether the metabolites M-5, M-6 and M-14 of propiverine retain the pharmacological properties of the parent compound also in juvenile organisms. EFS-induced contractions of detrusor strips from juvenile pigs are more sensitive to atropine than strips from mature pigs. The atropine-resistant component of contraction is also significantly larger in juvenile pigs. Propiverine, its metabolites M-5, M-14 and also tolterodine completely reduce

Sixteen chronic back pain (CBP) patients, 16 tension headache (THA) patients and 16 healthy controls (HC) were exposed to four series of ten electric stimuli at perception threshold, pain threshold and 10% below pain tolerance. The EEG was recorded from three sites, in addition, the EMG from the m. frontalis and m. erector spinae, heart rate and skin conductance were assessed. The CBP patients showed significantly lower pain threshold and pain tolerance values than the HC and the THA patients whereas the THA patients displayed a higher pain tolerance. Habituation was reduced in the CBP group.

Myometrial tissue rings from postpartum rats (24 h after delivery) were studied in vitro by electric field stimulation, and the alpha1/beta2-adrenoceptor ratio was determined by a radioligand binding technique. Pregnancy-denervated uterine rings were stimulated by long-duration pulses (100 ms). The contractions were inhibited by beta2-agonists (terbutaline and fenoterol) and alpha-antagonists (phentolamine, urapidil and yohimbine) in a concentration-dependent manner. Their effects were not altered by the adrenergic neuron-blocking agent bretylium. The alpha-antagonists (except phentolamine) el
