Cerebellopontine angle meningioma in a patient presented as acute cerebrovascular accident.

UNLABELLED: Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) meningioma is a slowly growing benign tumor of the brain that may compress adjacent neural structures. It has variable clinical presentations that progress very slowly depending on its growth pattern and associated mass effect. A sudden onset clinical presentation is unusual and should prompt consideration of other potential etiologies. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, the authors present a 66-year-old male patient with diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia who presented to the emergency department of our hospital with sudden onset walking difficulty (ata

Surgical Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer: Currently Debated Topics on Vascular Resection.

Vascular resections involving the superior mesenteric and portal veins (SMV-PV), celiac axis (CA), superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and hepatic artery (HA) have multiplied in recent years, raising the resection rate for pancreatic cancer (PDAC) and the related morbidity and mortality rates. While resection is generally accepted for resectable SMV-PV, the usefulness of associated arterial resection in borderline resectable (BRPC) and locally-advanced PDAC (LAPC) is much debated. Careful selection of splenic vein reconstruction is very important to prevent left-sided portal hypertension (LSPH).

Maternal Caffeine Consumption and Its Impact on the Fetus: A Review.

Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for pregnant women and their developing fetuses, including being mindful of caffeine consumption. While consuming caffeine during pregnancy is generally safe, there is a concern among healthcare practitioners about whether it can adversely impact pregnancy. There is a lack of accurate information about the effects of caffeine on fetal development and inadequate education on the risks of excessive caffeine intake during pregnancy. Therefore, to address this gap, our review provides an overview of the current literature on the impact of caffeine consumptio

Bladder stone formation due to neglected double J stent: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Double J (DJ) stents are commonly used in genitourinary procedures, but they can lead to complications including infection, hematuria, encrustation, and stone formation. The longer the duration of encrustation, the greater the risk of complications and renal dysfunction. Forgotten stents pose challenges for patients and can require endourological or open surgical procedures. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old man with hypertension and coronary artery disease had a forgotten DJ stent for 3 years, causing suprapubic pain and dysuria. Kidney, ureter, and bladder (KUB)

Cardio-Metabolic Disease and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): A Narrative Review.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is considered the most common endocrine disorder affecting females in today's world. Although it has been primarily studied and discussed in terms of its reproductive symptoms such as infertility, amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea, acne, hirsutism, and mood disorders, there is yet another unexplored and under-diagnosed category in the PCOS spectrum of diseases: its cardio-metabolic consequences. PCOS patients are prone to these abnormalities from a very young age, increasing their morbidity and mortality rates compared to their regular counterparts. The usual path

Sex differences in maternal odor preferences and brain levels of GAP-43 and sonic hedgehog proteins in infant SHR and Wistar Kyoto rats.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that presents sex differences in the severity and presentation of symptoms, whose neurobiological basis is still unknown. Both Growth-associated Protein 43 (GAP-43) and Sonic hedgehog (Shh) are considered essential proteins for the appropriate brain development, but their participation in ADHD neurobiology have not been investigated yet. In this study, we hypothesized that alterations in these proteins could be related to behavioral traits to ADHD phenotype. Thus, both sexes of infant Spontaneously hypertensive ra

Drug-Drug Interactions in People Living With HIV at Risk of Hepatic and Renal Impairment: Current Status and Future Perspectives.

Despite the advancement of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), drug-drug interactions (DDIs) remain a relevant clinical issue for people living with HIV receiving ART. Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs can be victims and perpetrators of DDIs, and a detailed investigation during drug discovery and development is required to determine whether dose adjustments are necessary or coadministrations are contraindicated. Maintaining therapeutic ARV plasma concentrations is essential for successful ART, and changes resulting from potential DDIs could lead to to

Low serum albumin: A neglected predictor in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Albumin, the most abundant circulating protein in blood, is an essential protein which binds and transports various drugs and substances, maintains the oncotic pressure of blood and influences the physiological function of the circulatory system. Albumin also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic properties. Evidence supports albumin's role as a strong predictor of cardiovascular (CV) risk in several patient groups. Its protective role extends to those with coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease or ischemic stroke,

Priapism caused by partial deficiency of tetrahydrobiopterin through hypofunction of the sympathetic neurons in sepiapterin reductase gene-disrupted mice.

6R-L-erythro-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential cofactor for aromatic L-amino acid hydroxylases, including tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), alkylglycerol monooxygenase, and three types of nitric oxide (NO) synthases (NOS). Sepiapterin reductase (SPR) catalyzes the third step of BH4 biosynthesis. SPR gene-disrupted (Spr-/- ) mice exhibit a dystonic posture, low body weight, hyperphenylalaninemia, and unstable hypertension with endothelial dysfunction. In this study, we found that Spr-/- mice suffered from a high incidence of severe priapism. Their erections persisted for months. The bi

The role of Sphingomyelin synthase 2 (SMS2) in platelet activation and its clinical significance.

BACKGROUND: Sphingomyelin (SM) is an essential component of biological lipid rafts, and it plays an indispensable role in maintaining plasma membrane stability and in mediating signal transduction. The ultimate biosynthesis of SM is catalyzed by two sphingomyelin synthases (SMSs) namely SMS1 and SMS2, which are selectively distributed in the trans-Golgi apparatus and the plasma membrane. It has been demonstrated that SMS2 acts as an irreplaceable molecule in the regulation of transmembrane signaling, and loss of SMS2 has been reported to worsen atherosclerosis and liver steatosis. However, the

Pancreaticoduodenectomy combined with splenectomy for a patient with pancreatic cancer and pancytopenia due to liver cirrhosis: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The incidence of patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) is increasing. Patients with LC are known to have a greater risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality than patients without LC. A treatment option such as pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) has not been validated to be safe for these patients, especially those with pancytopenia due to portal hypertension (PH). Providing an effective treatment option for these patients is essential. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we describe a patient with pancreatic cancer with pancytopenia due to LC that was successfully treated with

Gender Bias in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Detection, and Management, with Specific Reference to Coronary Artery Disease.

Even though cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills more women than men each year and remains a leading cause of death in women, it is a common misconception that women are less likely to develop CVD. Considerable sex difference exists between men and women with regard to prevention, investigations, and management of CVD. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major contributor to CVD morbidity and mortality and hence is specifically addressed in this article. With an explosive increase in the incidence of conventional risk factors for coronary artery disease in India, there has been an alarming increa
