Breast feeding, bottle feeding and dental caries in Kuwait, a country with low-fluoride levels in the water supply.

A study was carried out in Kuwait, a country with low levels of fluoride in the water supplies, to determine the prevalence and extent of caries in early childhood, and enquire into associated factors. Mothers of pre-schoolchildren were interviewed, and their children aged 18 to 48 months received a dental examination. Of the 227 children examined, 107 (47 per cent) were caries free, and 41 (18%) had five or more dmf teeth. 'Nursing caries', affecting at least two maxillary incisors, was seen in 19 per cent of the sample. Breast fed children were significantly more likely to be caries free tha

Design and implementation of a theory of planned behavior-based nutrition education intervention for adolescent girls in rural Nepal: a school-based cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Adolescence is a pivotal period of physical, psychological, and cognitive development during which individuals are highly vulnerable to nutritional deficiency. Undernutrition, overweight/obesity, and anemia are prominent public health concerns in low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal. Anemia affects nearly one-quarter of individuals aged 10-24 years globally, with a disproportionately high burden in resource-constrained settings. This study primarily aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-driven school-based nutrition education intervention in improving dietary behaviors, h

A Multicomponent Behavioral Intervention to Reduce Stroke Risk Factor Behaviors: The Stroke Health and Risk Education Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Stroke Health and Risk Education Project was a cluster-randomized, faith-based, culturally sensitive, theory-based multicomponent behavioral intervention trial to reduce key stroke risk factor behaviors in Hispanics/Latinos and European Americans. METHODS: Ten Catholic churches were randomized to intervention or control group. The intervention group received a 1-year multicomponent intervention (with poor adherence) that included self-help materials, tailored newsletters, and motivational interviewing counseling calls. Multilevel modeling, accounting for clustering

Research Note: Effects of environmental sound stimulus on behavioral responses, cortisol levels, and horizontal immunity of transferred pullets.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prolonged exposure to varying levels of music or noise on the behavioral, physiological, and immune responses of pullets following their transfer to an egg-laying facility. A total of 240 one-day-old Hy-Line Brown pullets were randomly assigned to five groups: 0 dB sound stimulation, low-decibel music (65-75 dB), high-decibel music (85-95 dB), low-decibel noise (65-75 dB), and high-decibel noise (85-95 dB) stimuli. Pullets received music or noise stimuli 10 h per d from 1-day-old to 16-wk-old and were then transferred to the egg-laying fa

The prevalence of early childhood caries in 12- to 36-month-old children in Recife, Brazil.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of early childhood caries among preschool children aged between 12 and 36 months from poor communities in the city of Recife, Brazil. This prevalence was evaluated along with the type and duration of feeding, supplementary diet in terms of cariogenicity and quantity of sugar intake. Of the 468 children studied, 28.46% presented caries and the association between the variable of a cariogenic diet and caries was strongly significant (x2 = 13.36 and p < 0.001). From the results of the present study it is possible to draw the followin

Effect of probiotic Bacillus cereus PKA18 on the overall growth, gut microbiome, and immunity in Clarias magur (Hamilton, 1822).

The current study evaluated the probiotic potential of Bacillus cereus PKA18, isolated from indigenous Clarias batrachus, as a dietary supplement for the cultivation of Clarias magur fingerlings (In India, the species Clarias batrachus was reclassified as the neotype Clarias magur). Prior to application in fish, Bacillus cereus PKA18 was subjected to safety evaluation, which confirmed negative enterotoxin production, non-hemolytic (γ-hemolysis) behavior on sheep, fish, and human blood agar, and the absence of pathogenic effects or adverse impacts on fish growth following intraperitoneal admini

A stress-activated mid-insula to BNST pathway regulates susceptibility to abstinence-induced negative affect in female mice.

Stress is central to many neuropsychiatric conditions, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Stress influences the initiation and continued use of alcohol, the progression to AUD, and relapse. Identifying the neurocircuits activated during stress, and individual variability in these responses is critical for developing new treatment targets for AUD, particularly to mitigate stress-induced relapse. Using a longitudinal approach, this study examined the relationship between sub-chronic stress exposure and negative affect during protracted abstinence following chronic ethanol exposure. Sub-chroni

Exploring animal protein sources against prevent age-related short-term memory decline in mice: Dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein exhibits superior protective effects.

Dietary factors, particularly proteins, have been extensively explored to combat cognitive impairment. We have previously reported that dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein (APP) is more effective than casein (CAS) or fish oil in maintaining short-term memory in senescence-accelerated mice prone 10 (SAMP10). To examine the specificity of the protective effect of APP intakes against short-term memory decline, we assessed the impact of various dietary animal proteins, including APP, CAS, chicken breast protein (CP), and whey protein (WP), against age-related cognitive function in SAMP10 mice. A

Tadpoles rely on mechanosensory stimuli for communication when visual capabilities are poor.

The ways in which animals sense the world changes throughout development. For example, young of many species have limited visual capabilities, but still make social decisions, likely based on information gathered through other sensory modalities. Poison frog tadpoles display complex social behaviors that have been suggested to rely on vision despite a century of research indicating tadpoles have poorly-developed visual systems relative to adults. Alternatively, other sensory modalities, such as the lateral line system, are functional at hatching in frogs and may guide social decisions while ot

Heat ameliorative measures in Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) heifers during summer: effect on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior.

Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is the mainstay of milk production in Asian countries including India. However, the hot climate of the country remains the biggest bottleneck to exploit the potential of this species. Therefore, a study was conducted to assess the effect of heat ameliorative measures on microclimate, thermal comfort, and behavior of Murrah buffalo heifers during summer. Buffalo heifers (n = 24) between the age of 15 and 20 months with a mean body weight of 363.75 ± 11.27 kg were randomly grouped into four treatments based on their age and body weight. The heifers kept in the she

NonREM Disorders of Arousal and Related Parasomnias: an Updated Review.

Parasomnias are abnormal behaviors and/or experiences emanating from or associated with sleep typically manifesting as motor movements of varying semiology. We discuss mainly nonrapid eye movement sleep and related parasomnias in this article. Sleepwalking (SW), sleep terrors (ST), confusional arousals, and related disorders result from an incomplete dissociation of wakefulness from nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Conditions that provoke repeated cortical arousals, and/or promote sleep inertia, lead to NREM parasomnias by impairing normal arousal mechanisms. Changes in the cyclic alternati

Host Plants Affect the Foraging Success of Two Parasitoids that Attack Light Brown Apple Moth Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana is a key pest of wine grapes in Australia. Two parasitoids, Dolichogenidea tasmanica and Therophilus unimaculatus, attack the larval stage of this pest. D. tasmanica is dominant in vineyards, whereas T. unimaculatus is mainly active in native vegetation. We sought to understand why they differ in their use of habitats. Plants are a major component of habitats of parasitoids, and herbivore-infested plants influence parasitoid foraging efficiency by their architecture and emission of volatile chemicals. We investigated how different plant species

The effect of toe trimming on behavior, mobility, toe length and other indicators of welfare in tom turkeys.

Society is increasingly concerned about the welfare of animals kept for food production, for this reason, invasive procedures such as toe trimming in turkeys must be studied to assess the corresponding welfare implications and to ensure such procedures are acceptable for continued use. To this end, research was conducted to evaluate the welfare effects of toe trimming on toms raised to 140 d. The study used 306 Hybrid Converter toms, half of which were toe trimmed using a Microwave Claw Processor (MCP) which group are denoted T, and half of which were sham treated but not trimmed, which group

Winter Activity and Aboveground Hybridization Between the Two Biotypes of the West Nile Virus Vector Culex pipiens.

Culex (Cx.) pipiens mosquitoes are important vectors of West Nile virus (WNV). In Europe, the species Cx. pipiens consists of two biotypes, pipiens and molestus, which are morphologically identical, but differ in behavior. Typical behavior of the molestus biotype is the ability to remain active during winter, whereas the pipiens biotype enters diapause. The current paradigm is that the two biotypes occur sympatrically in southern Europe, but occur in isolated above- and belowground populations in northern Europe. In northern Europe, hybridization between biotypes is considered to be low becaus

Involvement of the opioid system in the orexigenic and hedonic effects of melanin-concentrating hormone.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) exerts an orexigenic effect that resembles that of opioids, suggesting that the MCH and opioid systems could interact in controlling the food intake behavior. Three series of experiments were conducted in male Wistar rats: 1) to test the ability of the κ-, μ-, and δ-opioid receptor antagonists binaltorphimine (nor-BNI-κ), β-funaltrexamine (β-FNA-μ), and naltrindole (NTI-δ), respectively, to block the stimulating effects of MCH on food intake; 2) to verify the ability of MCH to induce a positive hedonic response to a sweet stimulus when injected into the nucl

Changes in diet quality and home food environment in preschool children following weight management.

BACKGROUND: Family-based obesity treatment interventions can successfully reduce energy intake in preschoolers. An implicit goal of obesity treatment interventions is to improve diet quality, but diet quality has been less examined as a treatment outcome in studies of preschoolers. The purpose of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis comparing the change in diet quality and home food environment in preschoolers assigned to a behavioral family-based obesity intervention (LAUNCH), motivational interviewing (MI) condition, or standard care (STC) condition. METHODS: Three 24-h dietary re

Temperament and body weight from ages 4 to 15 years.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In adulthood, conscientiousness and neuroticism are correlates of body weight and weight gain. The present research examines whether the childhood antecedents of these traits, persistence and negative reactivity, respectively, are associated with weight gain across childhood. We likewise examine sociability as a predictor of childhood weight gain and whether these three traits are associated with weight concerns and weight-management strategies in adolescence. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants (N=4153) were drawn from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, an ongoi
