INTRODUCTION: Restoring function and esthetics are essential aspects of periodontology and restorative dentistry. Depending on their extension and the tissues involved, the treatment of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) associated with gingival recessions may require a multidisciplinary approach, and different periodontal and restorative techniques have been described.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents an innovative approach to treat a deep NCCL combined with a gingival recession in a canine region of a female patient. A Computer Aided Design - Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/

Capillary hemangiomas and pyogenic granuloma (PG) are well-recognized benign entities of the oral cavity which are vascular in origin. PG is said to have a predilection for gingival area, whereas capillary hemangioma involves the lips, cheek, and tongue. They may mimic more serious conditions such as malignancies making the clinical diagnosis quite challenging. There have been cases reported where PG was found on extra-gingival sites such as the palate, lips, and tongue. We present the two cases of lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) on extragingival sites, namely the palate and buccal mucosa,

With the increase of adult patients seeking for orthodontic treatment, the influence of periodontal tissue on orthodontic treatment has gradually become the focus. For patients with periodontitis, it is essential to controlling the severity of periodontitis prior to orthodontic treatment. Periodontal disease can cause additional bone loss and make the orthodontic treatment complicated. Reducing the risk of orthodontic treatment in this situation is our major concern. In addition to periodontitis, orthodontic treatment may also cause gingival recession. On the other hand, the alveolar bone defe

In order to determine the association between oral health and oral hygiene conditions and nutritional status in children using a health facility in the Huánuco region, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 118 children who attended the Growth and Development Control (CRED) of the health clinic "La Esperanza." Oral health and hygiene conditions were evaluated by visible bacterial plaque, simplified oral hygiene, simplified bleeding, and gingival inflammation indices. Nutritional status was obtained from the last CRED control recorded in the clinical history. Acute malnutrition (A

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Lingual eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors in the early mixed dentition can result in a traumatic anterior crossbite, causing mobility and gingival recession to the opposing mandibular incisors.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report presents a common finding of a 7-year-old boy with a dental crossbite and pseudo-Class III malocclusion caused by lingual eruption of the maxillary central incisors. An interceptive phase of orthodontic treatment was provided by bonding a beveled resin turbo on the mandibular incisors. The crossbite was corrected in 3 months

The aim of this study was to histologically examine any epithelial cell inclusions in submerged subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) after clinical healing was achieved. A total of 16 patients with Miller Class I or II gingival recessions were consecutively treated with a bilaminar procedure. At 2 months after surgery, a gingival tissue specimen was harvested from all SCTG-treated sites and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The histologic evaluation revealed connective tissue in active reorganization without epithelial inclusions in 14 of the 16 tissue specimens. In the remaining 2 speci

Orthodontic extrusion with multidisciplinary treatment can provide predictable outcomes in selected situations, reducing the costs and the adaptation times of gingival tissues after implant integration. Forced orthodontic extrusion is strongly related to interactions of teeth with their supportive periodontal tissues. This article reports a case of orthodontic extrusion of the maxillary incisors for later implant rehabilitation in a patient with periodontal disease. Slow forces were applied for 14 months. After this time, the teeth were extracted, and the implants were placed on the same day.

Dental therapy in general and periodontal therapy in particular is directed increasingly at the esthetic outcome for patients. Gingival recession is one of the most common esthetic concerns associated with periodontal tissues. Although various treatment modalities have been developed, subepithelial connective tissue grafting remains the most successful and predictable technique for treatment of gingival recession. Harvesting a connective tissue graft from the palate is many times not only traumatic, but also very painful for the patient. Use of single incision to harvest the subepithelial conn

In order to determine whether adequate attention is paid to the maintenance of good oral health in patients at risk of developing infective endocarditis, we studied 44 black patients with severe rheumatic heart disease before they had cardiac surgery. Plaque and gingival index scores were calculated and panoramic radiographs were done in all patients. There were 17 males and 27 females (mean age: 30.6 years). The plaque and gingival index scores were classified as poor in 31.8 and 54.6% of patients, respectively. Panoramic radiographic findings included caries in 56.8% of patients, peri-apical

BACKGROUND: Oral focal mucinosis (OFM) and cervical external root resorption are both rare lesions with an unknown etiology. In this article we report on a rare occurrence of OFM associated with cervical external root resorption.
METHODS: A 44-year-old female patient presented with sharp pain while drinking cold beverages and a firm localized gingival overgrowth adjacent to the buccal aspect of tooth #19. An excisional biopsy of the gingival lesion was taken and a deep cavity was found in the buccal aspect of the root. The cavity was restored with an amalgam filling.
RESULTS: The histologica

The main goal of periodontal therapy is to improve periodontal health and by doing so to maintain the patient's dentition. However, aesthetic, preservation and improvement have become an integral part of today's periodontal treatment. The term "Periodontal Plastic Surgery" was defined by the American Academy of Periodontology in 1996 as "surgical procedures preformed to prevent or correct anatomical, development, traumatic or plaque disease-induced defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, or bone". Gingival recessions present a functional and aesthetic problem which is a major indication for P

Zimmermann-Laband syndrome (ZLS) is a very rare autosomal dominant inherited condition characterized by 3 major clinical findings of which gingival hyperplasia are always present. The great heterogenicity of the syndrome is illustrated by the numerous variable clinical findings described in the literature. The purpose of the study was to examine a patient diagnosed with ZLS and to describe possible new characteristics of this rare syndrome, including the ultrastructural morphology using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) of the gingival and dermal fibroblasts. The ultrastrucutral morphol

Localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) is associated with a destruction of periodontal tissues and the presence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (AA). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from AA was found to induce a significant macrophage production of nitric oxide (NO). Increased nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was found to be negatively correlated with the neutrophil chemotactic response. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence and distribution of inducible NOS (iNOS) in human gingival tissue from LJP patients. The distribution of iNOS was assessed by monoclonal antibody agai

The purpose of this study was to histologically evaluate four teeth with recession defects that were treated with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The amount of root coverage obtained ranged from 16.7% to 50.0%. In one of the defects treated, new bone was formed but none of the new bone was coronal to the original gingival margin. Additionally, in this one case new cementum and connective tissue attachment was formed. However, because the new bone, new cementum, and new connective tissue were not coronal to the original gingival margin, this result could not be classified as regeneration. The

For many years, free autogenous grafts have been used as a method of gaining keratinized tissue around teeth with mucogingival problems. Creeping attachment using autogenous graft material has been actively studied. In addition, biocompatible, acellular connective-tissue material has recently been used as an alternative to free gingival grafts to increase the zone of keratinization. This report presents a patient with bilateral mucogingival defects in the canine and premolar areas. The patient received an autogenous graft on one side and a dermal matrix allograft on the contralateral side. Cre

This study was designed to demonstrate, by use of biotin-labeled hyaluronic acid binding protein (HABP) and an avidin-enzyme system, the localization of hyaluronan (HA) in periodontal tissue of beagle dogs during experimentally induced periodontitis. Experimental periodontitis was induced in the dogs by ligation of the gingival sulcus. Experimental tissue was collected at 0, 3, 7 and 21 days after ligation. HA was revealed by strong staining in the intercellular space around epithelial cells and periodontal ligament, and by light staining in the gingival connective tissue. According to the pro

Salivary and gingival crevicular fluid antibodies and systemic antibodies were analysed for levels and specificity against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans components. The major reactivity of salivary and serum IgA1 and IgA2 antibodies to the periodontal pathogen A. actinomycetemcomitans was against bands between 14 and 83 kD for IgA1 and bands between 14 and 68 kD for IgA2 in Western blot. In addition to specific binding, there was also a hitherto unrecognized Fc-mediated binding of IgG antibodies to an A. actinomycetemcomitans component around 50 kD. Serum IgG antibodies to A. actinomyce

After investigating the literature, we suggest these guidelines for tooth bleaching: If bleaching solutions of high concentration are used, prevent accidental exposure of gingival tissues to the solutions by use of a rubber dam. If using lower concentrations of bleaching solutions, avoid long-term exposures to gingival tissues. To maintain pulp vitality, keep bleaching time and temperatures to a minimum. Check teeth for exposed dentin and enamel fractures. Advise patients that thermal sensitivity may occur after the bleaching procedure and may persist for several days. Prescribe premedication

Survey dental examinations were conducted in 262 dentate elderly people aged 70 and older and residing in two rural Iowa counties. Over 60 percent of the elderly in these countries were dentate. Buccal and mesial sites of all teeth were assessed for gingival recession, pocket depth, and attachment loss. Mean loss of periodontal attachment was 2.1 mm, and was slightly greater in older age groups and in men. More gingival recession was found on buccal sites and deeper pocketing was found on mesial sites regardless of age group, sex, or tooth type. However, the clinical magnitude of these differe

The aim of this investigation was to obtain information about the composition and the morphology of the microorganisms that inhabit the root surface of a patient with chronic neutropenia and severe and progressive periodontitis. In addition, gingival biopsies were studied by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) to look for bacteria within the gingiva. Dark field microscopy (DFM) revealed 50% spirochetes, 30% motile rods, and 20% coccoid forms. Fourteen extracted teeth studied by SEM showed that the distribution of different bacterial morphotypes varies along the roo
