Tick-borne encephalitis.

We review the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of tick-borne encephalitis, and summarise biological and virological aspects that … limatic and ecological conditions suitable for circulation of the virus. Climate change and leisure habits expose more people to tick-bites and have contributed to the increase in number of cases despite availability of effective vaccines. The serological diagnosis is usually straightforward. No specific treatment for the disease exists, and immunisation …

LEP, LDLR and APOA4 gene polymorphisms and their relationship with the risk of overweight, obesity and chronic diseases in adults of the State of Sucre, Venezuela.

INTRODUCTION: Overweight, obesity and some chronic diseases have become more prevalent recently. It is well known that their causes may be genetic, epigenetic, environmental, or a mixture of these. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between nine single nucleotide polymorphisms of genes LEP (rs2167270), LDLR (rs885765, rs688, rs5925, rs55903358, rs5742911) and APOA4 (rs5095, rs675, rs5110) with obesity-related phenotypes and other comorbidities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We recruited 144 adults (76 males and 68 females, with average ages of 29.93±8.29 and 32.49±11.15 years, respectively) in t

Asymmetrical distalization of maxillary molars with zygomatic anchorage, improved superelastic nickel-titanium alloy wires, and open-coil springs.

INTRODUCTION: In nongrowing patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion, premolar extraction or maxillary distalization can be used as camouflage treatment. Zygomatic anchorage enables distalization in uncooperative or noncompliant patients. We describe 1 such procedure in a 24-year-old woman. METHODS: We used novel improved superelastic nickel-titanium archwires combined with nickel-titanium open-coil springs to provide a constant and continuous low force to the dentition. RESULTS: We were able to successfully eliminate the protrusive profile and correct the Class II molar relationship usi

[Hygiene practices and contamination risks of surface waters by schistosome eggs: the case of an infested village in Northern Senegal].

The transmission of intestinal schistosomiasis presumes that faecal materials containing viable schistosome eggs reach natural water bodies infested with snail intermediate host. So far there is little knowledge about the contamination dynamics of streams with schistosome eggs. We conducted a pilot study on defecating behaviour and hygienic practices in an Schistosoma mansoni endemic focus in Northern Senegal. Questionnaires were used to obtain quantitative data on hygienic practices and the use of latrines in 59 children. Although the community was well endowed with pit latrines, most of the

Collapsibility of the internal jugular veins in the lateral decubitus body position: A potential protective role of the cerebral venous outflow against neurodegeneration.

Recent research has revealed that patients with neurodegenerative disease sleep longer in the supine position, while healthy controls prefer sleeping in the lateral decubitus position. Thus, sleeping in the lateral position seems to be protective against neurodegeneration. It has also been suggested that a protective role of this body position could be associated with better cerebral venous drainage in this body position, which results in more active glymphatic system of the brain (the system responsible for clearance of the cerebral tissue from waste products, e.g. amyloid-β). Since no publis

Burning mouth syndrome: a review and update.

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is mainly found in middle aged or elderly women and is characterized by intense burning or itching sensation of the tongue or other regions of the oral mucosa. It can be accompanied by xerostomia and dysgeusia. The syndrome generally manifests spontaneously, and the discomfort is typically of a continuous nature but increases in intensity during the evening and at night. Although BMS classically has been attributed to a range of factors, in recent years evidence has been obtained relating it peripheral (sensory C and/or trigeminal nerve fibers) or central neuropath

Cosleeping in urban families with young children in the United States.

The prevalence and correlates of sleeping in the parental bed among healthy children between 6 months and 4 years of age are described. One hundred fifty children were enrolled in an interview study on the basis of "well-child" care appointments in representative pediatric facilities. The sample created was similar in demographic characteristics to census data for the Cleveland area. In this cross section of families in a large US city, cosleeping was a routine and recent practice in 35% of white and 70% of black families. Cosleeping in both racial groups was associated with approaches to slee

Sleep and hypnotic drugs.

In recent years the effectiveness of hypnotic drugs has had to be assessed in terms of a greatly increased knowledge of the physiology and pathology of sleep. The normal pattern of sleep and wakefulness involves a cyclic alternation between three rather than two basically dissimilar states of the brain and body - alert wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. The pattern of this alternation in individual people results from the interaction of many influences - biological (including genetic, early developmental and later degenerative influences), psyc

These bodily habits were reflected in colonial building culture, whose darkened rooms and labour needs highlight the instrumentality of medical technologies in solidifying and spatializing imperial authority.

Optimising Robotic Radical Gastrectomy: A Technical Roadmap for Bipolar Forceps-Assisted Lymphadenectomy and Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Robotic surgeries offer technical advantages over laparoscopic surgery, including enhanced precision and ergonomics. However, optimal utilisation requires overcoming the 'carryover effect' of laparoscopic habits and adapting techniques to the robotic platform's unique capabilities. Here we introduce an approach regarding robotic gastrectomy, focusing on instrument selection and lymphadenectomy. METHODS: This technical report synthesises our experience with robotic gastrectomy. Key innovations include: (1) preferential use of Maryland bipolar forceps for lymphadenectomy; (2) a robo…

Insulin pens are a necessity, not a luxury: Addressing inequitable access to diabetes treatment in South Africa's public sector.

Diabetes is a growing public health crisis in South Africa (SA), driven by urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits and an ageing population. The country has one of the highest diabetes prevalence rates in sub-Saharan Africa, with millions affected, many of whom remain undiagnosed. The disease disproportionately impacts low-income communities, where limited healthcare access and late diagnoses lead to severe complications and economic strain. While insulin pens improve glycaemic control and patient adherence, they remain largely inaccessible in the public sector owing to high co…

Macao Guangdong music through the lens of ethnography of musical performance.

This study adopts the ethnography of musical performance as its methodological framework. Taking the Macao Guangdong Music Friendship Association as its primary field site, it employs a three-tiered "body-event-context" model to examine the living practices of a traditional music society in an urban setting. Through participant observation of rehearsals, teaching sessions, community festivals, and international performances, the research focuses on a micro-ethnographic thick description of the musicians' embodied practices, including playing postures, aural habits, and non-verbal interactions.…

The antimetastatic effects of calorie restriction are negated by voluntary exercise in an aggressive breast cancer mouse model.

The role of lifestyle interventions in treatment success has become essential for nearly every disease. Healthy dietary habits, regular exercise, and stress management are key pillars that can improve quality of life during treatment, as well as delay disease onset and progression. In this study, we focus on the combination of mild calorie restriction (CR) and voluntary exercise as coadjuvants to chemotherapy in the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer using the 4T1 mouse model. In this model, voluntary exercise did not add benefits beyond chemotherapy plus CR in terms of primary tumor s…
