UNLABELLED: Acetazolamide (AZ) has been found to be effective in inducing vasodilatation. To evaluate the mechanism by which AZ acts, we compared the effects of this agent on vascular PGI2, endothelin (ET-1), and NOx, with those induced by CO2 gas inhalation.
METHOD: Blood flow (BF) was measured in the liver, kidneys, stomach wall, and abdominal muscle of anesthetized white rabbits with a laser flow meter at baseline and again after sequential doses of AZ (4 mg/kg) or CO2 inhalation. Inhalation of nitric oxide (NO) is known to dilate preconstricted airways. In asthmatics, there are large variations in the effect of NO on airway tone. One explanation of these variations may be different degrees of airway wall oedema. The effect of NO inhalation on methacholine (meth)-induced airway constriction was investigated in a rabbit model. BACKGROUND: Reports about side effects from cromolyn sodium (DSCG) are few and only a minority of them indicate the possibility of an immediate type I hypersensitivity reaction.
METHODS: We report an 8-year-old boy with a history of seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. The patient reported two immediate episodes of acute asthma following inhalation of a cromolyn sodium (DSCG) capsule with an interval of 6 months. Using adult mongrel dogs, experiments were performed to elucidate the relationship between the changes in the myocardial oxygen tension (PmO2) in anoxia and disturbances of cardiac function. Dogs, forced to inspire 100% N2, suffered from a respiratory arrest after 5 min, and developed acute anoxia. Pregnant hamsters were exposed to acetonitrile by inhalation, ingestion, or ip injection during the early primitive streak stage of embryogenesis. The aim of the present study was to establish a novel method for inducing deep hypothermia in rats. Cooling rats anesthetized with isoflurane caused a time-dependent decrease in rectal temperature, but cardiac arrest occurred before their body temperature reached 20 °C when isoflurane inhalation was continued during the cooling process. The effects of a beta 2-sympathomimetic (salbutamol or fenoterol) and the anticholinergic SCH 1000 administered both in combination and with placebo were compared in a double-blind random crossover design. Thirty-three patients with atopic, non-atopic and psychogenic asthma were studied.
