A 26-year-old male presented with sudden right-sided sensorineural hearing loss after injection of heroin into the right neck. The hearing loss was found to be profound with no other associated abnormalities on examination or investigation. There was no change at 3-month follow-up. This was most probably due to arterial injection and is a previously unreported complication of heroin abuse.

Skin popping refers to the practice of injecting drugs beneath the skin without concern for vascular access. We describe a male HIV seropositive injecting-drug user with chronic cutaneous ulcerations on the legs at sites of skin popping. Treatment with antiretroviral drugs and stanozolol was associated with a striking clinical improvement of the ulcer in two weeks. The mechanism of action, improvement of immune function by the antiretroviral treatment or activity of stanozolol on collagen and transforming growth factor-beta1 synthesis, remains unknown.

BACKGROUND: Recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rG-CSF) has been suggested as a treatment for certain varieties of neonatal neutropenia, but little is known about the pharmacologic disposition of rG-CSF in that population.

PURPOSE: To examine an unusual cause of periorbital cellulitis, Pasteurella multocida.
METHODS: Case report, review of the literature.
RESULTS: We treated a 13-year-old previously healthy child who developed Pasteurella preseptal cellulitis secondary to a cat bite and cat scratch. After receiving a dose of intravenous antibiotics and starting oral antibiotics, the child had delayed onset of several abscesses around the right eye, with marked pain and erythema. After incision and drainage, he improved.

During a period of 1 year from July 95 to June 96, 60 patients with falciparum malaria were treated with quinine at Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Mangalore. Of these, 24 patients developed adverse effects to quinine. They were cinchonism (15) cardiotoxicity (10) hypoglycemia (9) hyperventilation (3) hypersensitivity reactions (3) and hypokalemia (1).
