Is deinstitutionalization working in our community?

This exploratory study examined the impact of deinstitutionalization on consumers admitted to a regional community care unit (CCU) between 1996 and 2007, and looked at lengths of stay and re-admissions to acute psychiatric care units and the impact this might have on quality of life. The results showed that the original and current residents of CCU have improved quality of life through friendships, a home-like environment, and reduced re-admissions to acute psychiatric care units; however, further improvements can be made with more emphasis on employment/vocational services and social inclusio

Paternal drinking, intimate relationship quality, and alcohol consumption in pregnant Ukrainian women.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) represent a significant public health problem. The influence of the male partner's alcohol consumption patterns and the quality of the partner's intimate relationship might be important factors to consider in the design of successful FASD prevention programs. METHOD: As part of the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, 166 pregnant women in two regions in Ukraine participated in an in-person interview at an average gestational age of 18-19 weeks. Subjects were classifi

Intimate partner violence: the role of the relationship between perpetrators and children who witness violence.

The issue of the father-child relationship has been greatly ignored in the domestic violence research literature. This study investigated whether intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated by biological fathers resulted in higher levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms and behavior problems than violence perpetrated by nonbiological fathers and whether children who witnessed violence perpetrated by multiple father figures had increased levels of posttraumatic stress disorder and behavioral symptoms. Eighty mothers who experienced domestic incidents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL

Social anxiety and disinhibition: an analysis of curiosity and social rank appraisals, approach-avoidance conflicts, and disruptive risk-taking behavior.

We examined how social anxiety is related to appraisals for various disinhibited behaviors and sought to identify potential subgroups of socially anxious people. College students completed trait measures and appraised disinhibited behaviors on their potential for threat, opportunity to satisfy curiosity, and ability to enhance social status. Three months later, participants were asked to report on their frequency of disinhibited behaviors since the initial assessment. People with greater social anxiety demonstrated frequent approach-avoidance conflicts - co-existing recognition of threats and

Long-term psychologic implications of congenital heart disease: a 25-year follow-up.

Patients with various types of congenital heart disease were contacted 25 years after their original examination at the Mayo Clinic. In addition to providing their current health status, level of education achieved, and current occupation, they were asked to complete a detailed standardized questionnaire to assess their degree of psychologic stress. Of the original 463 patients, 168 completed and returned the psychologic questionnaires. These patients had evidence of psychologic stress in excess of that expected on the basis of normative data. Furthermore, the degree of stress was unrelated to

What will others think of me? The longitudinal association between trauma-related shame and guilt and psychopathology after a terror attack.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related shame and guilt have been identified as important factors for mental health following interpersonal trauma. For survivors of terror and disasters, however, the role of shame and guilt remains largely unknown. AIMS: To explore the long-term occurrence of trauma-related shame and guilt among survivors of a terror attack, and the potential importance of these emotions for mental health. METHOD: A total of 347 survivors (48.7% female, mean age at the time of the attack: 19.25 years, s.d. = 4.40) of the 2011 massacre on Utøya island, Norway, participated in face-to-face

The role of relationship impairment on the link between posttraumatic stress severity and heavy episodic drinking varies by sex.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress symptoms are related to higher rates of heavy episodic drinking (HED). Given that women are at higher risk for posttraumatic stress symptoms and long-term health effects from HED, identification of factors related to HED among women with posttraumatic stress symptoms could have important implications for prevention and treatment. One such factor is romantic relationship impairment given the association between posttraumatic stress and greater relationship conflict. Further, women, but not men, are more likely to drink in heavy quantities when exp

Exploring opportunities with activity-based work in Swedish public workplaces-a qualitative analysis based on the socio-ecological model.

INTRODUCTION: Activity-based work (ABW) is a workplace concept that offers different work environments, letting employees choose settings that best support their specific tasks. Although research on ABW is growing, there is limited knowledge about how employees experience opportunities in these environments, particularly from a salutogenic health-promoting perspective. METHODS: A qualitative design was applied using a survey with open-ended questions, completed by 448 employees in administrative roles in one public sector organization in Sweden. A combined deductive and inductive content anal

Childhood interpersonal antecedents of adult romantic relationship adjustment: Prospective evidence from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development.

This report leveraged the subsample of romantically involved participants in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development at the most recent assessment of the cohort (n = 505; Mage = 28.6 years; 58.1% female; 81.7% White/non-Hispanic) to study the role of three theoretically salient childhood interpersonal experiences as potential antecedents of self-reported romantic relationship adjustment in early adulthood. Predictors were measured multiple times prospectively in childhood through adolescence and included (a) direct observatio

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediate the Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Interpersonal Problems in Eating Disorders.

Recent research highlights the role of childhood trauma in the development of eating disorders (EDs), suggesting that adverse experiences can disrupt emotional and cognitive development, leading to early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and interpersonal problems. EMSs are psychological structures encompassing cognition, emotions, images, and bodily sensations. These EMSs are hypothesized to mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and ED pathology. This study aimed to extend the investigation of how childhood trauma leads to interpersonal difficulties, mediated by EMSs. This cross-sectiona

Trauma, resilience and significant relationships: Sex differences in protective factors for military mental health.

BACKGROUND: Military service is historically a male-dominated occupation, as such, the majority of research examining the development of mental disorder in Australian Defence Force members has had primarily male samples. While there have been mixed findings internationally regarding sex differences in rates of mental disorder and subthreshold symptoms among military personnel, across studies, the evidence tends to suggest that female military members are at least as likely as males to experience subthreshold mental health symptoms and have similar or higher rates of posttraumatic stress disord
