[Correction of enteral distress syndrome in acute intestinal obstruction].

OBJECTIVE: On the basis of a comprehensive assessment of the functional state of the intestine in acute mechanical small bowel obstruction, to justify adequate schemes of its protection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A clinical and laboratory study of 48 patients with acute small bowel obstruction developed against the background of abdominal adhesions, strangulated abdominal hernia was conducted. The first group (n=25) of patients who underwent laparotomy, removal of intestinal obstruction (adhesiolysis and/or herniation, hernial gate plastic surgery), intestinal intubation, standardized therapy aft

Mucor and Malignancy: A Double-Hit Case of Intestinal Ischemia.

Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection due to molds in the order Mucorales. These opportunistic pathogens found in soil or decaying organic matter mostly affect immunocompromised hosts. Rhino-orbital-cerebral, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and disseminated patterns are possible. We describe a case of angioinvasive colonic mucormycosis in a patient with recent diabetic ketoacidosis and undiagnosed colon adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis was made on histopathology after the patient developed intestinal ischemia and underwent hemicolectomy. This case highlights the potentially diverse

Intestinal mucormycosis in a patient with COVID-19: A case report.

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to all the continents posing a serious threat to global health. It can present with myriad symptoms and complications including susceptibility to fungal co-infections. We hereby describe a case of mucormycosis in a 17 year old COVID-19 positive female with no known comorbidities presenting with abdominal pain and distention and ultimately developing intestinal perforation. Early identication of the symptoms is essential to make a correct and early diagnosis to prevent complications.

Pseudo-intestinal obstruction after transsphenoidal surgery for craniopharyngioma.

Craniopharyngioma surgery is frequently associated with the occurrence of central diabetes insipidus, and oral rehydration therapy is reliable for postoperative management if the patient's thirst is normal. A 61-year-old Japanese male patient underwent extended endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for craniopharyngioma. He was undergoing acute treatment for postoperative central diabetes insipidus and hypopituitarism in the intensive care unit. Two days after the surgery, he started to vomit occasionally, despite receiving oral rehydration therapy for central diabetes insipidus. Despite increasi

Lactobacillus and intestinal diseases: Mechanisms of action and clinical applications.

The gut microbial ecosystem, which is a collection of the host-microbiota interactions and the inter-species interplay among bacteria-dominated microbiota, has become a research hotspot due to its contribution to host health in recent years. Lactobacillus, which has worldwide usage in fermented dairy products, has aroused increasing attention and becomes one of the commonly used probiotics given its promising applications in intestinal health and disease, though it occupies a relatively small proportion of the intestinal microbiota. In the review, we first update the current understanding of d

Intestinal ischemia in a patient with vascular malformation: a recipe for disaster.

Anatomical variations of the celiac and mesenteric artery have been described over the past two centuries; many of these variations will have no clinical repercussions and will only be found incidentally or during imaging studies. However, these variations can lead to severe complications if undetected during surgery, transplantation or when they are affected by ischemia. Therefore, prompt treatment is needed to overcome these dangerous scenarios. We present the case of a 71-year-old patient who had a celiacomesenteric trunk and developed transient intestinal ischemia; however, he suffered sev

Intestinal Ewing sarcoma: An unusual presentation in the pediatric age.

BACKGROUND: Ewing's Sarcoma (ES) is the second most common type of bone cancer, with an annual incidence of 2.9:100,000. Extraosseous cases represent 15%; however, there are no reported cases of ES located in the intestine in the pediatric population. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 14-year-old male patient, previously healthy, who started with an anemic syndrome, weight loss, and diaphoresis of 8 weeks of evolution. After visiting a physician, who documented the presence of anemia, the patient was referred to the National Institute of Pediatrics. Physical examination showed grade III-

Aquaporin 8ab is required in zebrafish embryonic intestine development.

The aquaporin 8 (AQP8) is a small integral membrane protein that selectively transports water and other small uncharged solutes across cell plasma membranes. It has been demonstrated that AQP8 is ubiquitously present in various tissues and organs of mammals, and participates in many physiological and pathological processes. Recent studies showed that AQP8 is highly expressed in the columnar epithelial cells of mammalian colonic mucosa facing lumen, indicating that AQP8 plays potential roles in the physiology and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal tract. However, the role of AQP8 during gastro

The impact of the gut microbiome on extra-intestinal autoimmune diseases.

The prevalence of autoimmune diseases (ADs) worldwide has rapidly increased over the past few decades. Thus, in addition to the classical risk factors for ADs, such as genetic polymorphisms, infections and smoking, environmental triggers have been considered. Recent sequencing-based approaches have revealed that patients with extra-intestinal ADs, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and systemic lupus erythematosus, have distinct gut microbiota compositions compared to healthy controls. Faecal microbiota transplantation or inoculation with specific microbes in ani

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis presenting with intestinal obstruction: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare vasculitis. The gastrointestinal symptoms and complications of the disease are rare in GPA patients. One the rarest is intestinal obstruction which when found was always caused by bowel perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report the case of a 14 years-old female patient who is a known case of granulomatosis with polyangiitis presented with intestinal obstruction without perforation and treated conservatively. DISCUSSION: Gastrointestinal involvement is seen in only 5-10 % of the cases and is a poor prognostic factor.

Cross-Talk Between the Intestinal Epithelium and Salmonella Typhimurium.

Salmonella enterica serovars are invasive gram-negative bacteria, causing a wide range of diseases from gastroenteritis to typhoid fever, representing a public health threat around the world. Salmonella gains access to the intestinal lumen after oral ingestion of contaminated food or water. The crucial initial step to establish infection is the interaction with the intestinal epithelium. Human-adapted serovars such as S. Typhi or S. Paratyphi disseminate to systemic organs and induce life-threatening disease known as typhoid fever, whereas broad-host serovars such as S. Typhimurium usually are

Enriched and Decreased Intestinal Microbes in Active VKH Patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the possible microbiome related to Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease in comparison to patients with noninfectious anterior scleritis and healthy people. METHODS: Fecal samples were extracted from 42 individuals, including 11 patients with active VKH, 11 healthy people, and 20 patients with noninfectious anterior scleritis. We amplified the V3 to V4 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) region to obtain the target sequence. Then, the target sequence was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. The obtained target sequences were sequenced by high-throughput 16S rDNA analysis. RESULTS:

Co-infection of intestinal helminths in humans and animals in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: A large number of studies have assessed risk factors for infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STH), but few have investigated the interactions between the different parasites or compared these between host species across hosts. Here, we assessed the associations between Ascaris, Trichuris, hookworm, strongyle and Toxocara infections in the Philippines in human and animal hosts. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from humans and animals (dogs, cats and pigs) in 252 households from four villages in southern Philippines and intestinal helminth infections were assessed by mi

Fucosyltransferase 2: A Genetic Risk Factor for Intestinal Diseases.

The fucosyltransferase 2 gene (FUT2) mediates the synthesis of histoblood group antigens (HBGA) that occur in vivo from multiple organs, particularly on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells and body fluids. To date, many studies have demonstrated that the interaction of HBGA with the host microbiota is the cause of pathogenesis of intestinal diseases, making FUT2 non-secretor a risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to the lack of HBGA. As HBGA also acts as an attachment site for norovirus (NoV) and rotavirus (RV), the non-secretor becomes a protective factor for both viral

14-3-3σ Functions as an Intestinal Tumor Suppressor.

Although the 14-3-3σ gene was initially identified as a p53 target gene in colorectal cancer cells, its potential role in intestinal tumorigenesis has remained unknown. Here we determined that 14-3-3σ expression is significantly downregulated in primary human colorectal cancer when compared with adjacent normal colonic tissue in patient samples. Downregulation of 14-3-3σ in primary colorectal cancers was significantly associated with p53 mutation, increasing tumor stage, distant metastasis, and poor patient survival. Poor survival was more significantly associated with decreased 14-3-3σ expres
