Percutaneous treatments, such as ethanol injection and radiofrequency, have been recently proposed for the treatment of liver metastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of these treatments in a series of 8 patients who subsequently underwent liver resection. These patients had been treated with percutaneous methods between December 1995 and May 1997. BACKGROUND: Embryonic sarcoma of the liver is uncommon in adults. We report an unusual case presenting as a cyst-like formation of the liver.
CASE REPORT: The pre-operative and also the peroperative histology diagnosis was remodelled biliary cyst. The patient was treated accordingly. The final diagnosis of embryonic sarcoma of the liver was made when a local recurrence developed. The patient underwent hepatic resection followed by a chemotherapy and radiotherapy protocol. Tumor markers were measured within the tumor and gave a positive result for CA-125.

A 6-month-old boy presented with a large abdominal mass that proved to be a cystic hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma occupying both hepatic lobes. During fetal life, a bulky, abnormal, cystic placenta had been present, which on histological examination was diagnosed as mesenchymal stem villous hyperplasia. This association has not previously been reported.

The results of surgical treatment of more than 600 patients with liver echinococcosis are analysed. The accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosis of the character of the damage is 88%; the combination of ultrasound methods with serology tests and computer tomography has increased the accuracy to 98-100%. New treatment approaches have been proposed depending on a character, location and extent of liver damage. The improvement of surgical technique made it possible to decrease the frequency of postoperative morbidity to 17.4% and mortality-to 3%.

Delineation of the portal vein and its major attributes is essential for assessing portal hypertension and its complications. MR imaging appears to be well-suited for such an evaluation. This article provides an overview of the MR imaging techniques used to assess the portal system as well as highlights of the more common etiologies associated with altered portal venous flow.

There are numerous causes of fulminant hepatic failure including acetaminophen, viral etiologies, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, ischemic hepatitis, and acute Budd-Chiari syndrome. One of the rare causes of fulminant hepatic failure is toxic mushroom poisoning. This article describes one case in which ingestion of a toxic mushroom, Amanita phalloides, caused a patient severe liver damage ultimately requiring organ transplantation. Early identification of live dysfunction and referral to a liver transplant center for evaluation may be critical to save such a patient's life.

From 1986 to 1995, 97 patients older than 65 years of age underwent hepatic resection at the Department of General Surgery, Hospital Lainz, Vienna. The population consisted of 39 men and 58 women with a mean age of 74 +/- 5.5 years. Primary neoplasia was the cause of resection in 35 patients, gallbladder cancer in 16 patients, and metastatic disease to the liver in 40 patients. BACKGROUND: The shortage of cadaveric donor livers is the rate-limiting step in clinical liver transplantation. Split liver transplantation provides a means to expand the cadaveric donor pool. A 33-year-old multiparous woman in the 34th gestational week presented with severe upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Clinical examination revealed severe epigastric tenderness. Liver metastases imply a major problem in patients with carcinoid tumors. Patients with localized disease should always undergo resection for cure. Patients with distant metastatic disease can also undergo resection for potential cure or symptom palliation because of the slow growth rate of many carcinoid tumors.
