The take-it-or-leave-it option allows small penalties to overcome social dilemmas.

Self-interest frequently causes individuals engaged in joint enterprises to choose actions that are counterproductive. Free-riders can invade a society of cooperators, causing a tragedy of the commons. Such social dilemmas can be overcome by positive or negative incentives. Even though an incentive-providing institution may protect a cooperative society from invasion by free-riders, it cannot always convert a society of free-riders to cooperation. In the latter case, both norms, cooperation and defection, are stable: To avoid a collapse to full defection, cooperators must be sufficiently numer

Child sex moderates the association between negative parenting and childhood conduct problems.

Although multiple dimensions of negative parenting behavior are associated with childhood conduct problems (CP), there is relatively little research on whether the association is equally robust in boys and girls. To improve the specificity of current models of negative parenting and offspring CP, we explored the potential moderating role of child sex in a sample of 179 5- to 10-year-old ethnically diverse boys and girls with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were assessed using multiple methods (i.e., rating scales, semistructured interviews) and informants (i.e.,

Neurocognitive mechanisms of gaze-expression interactions in face processing and social attention.

The face conveys a rich source of non-verbal information used during social communication. While research has revealed how specific facial channels such as emotional expression are processed, little is known about the prioritization and integration of multiple cues in the face during dyadic exchanges. Classic models of face perception have emphasized the segregation of dynamic vs. static facial features along independent information processing pathways. Here we review recent behavioral and neuroscientific evidence suggesting that within the dynamic stream, concurrent changes in eye gaze and em

Mood as input and perseverative worrying following the induction of discrete negative moods.

Previous research has demonstrated that a combination of negative mood and rigorous "as many as can" stop rules can be used to help explain a range of perseverative psychopathologies such as pathological worrying, compulsive checking, and depressive rumination (known as the mood-as-input hypothesis). The aim of the present study was to extend this work and examine whether specific emotions of the same valence will have similar or differential effects on task perseveration. The study experimentally induced discrete moods and manipulated task stop rules in an analog population. Results showed th

Amount of earnings during prize contingency management treatment is associated with posttreatment abstinence outcomes.

Contingency management (CM) treatments that provide patients with the opportunity to earn chances of winning prizes of varying magnitudes are becoming increasingly popular. In the CM literature, magnitude of reinforcement is linked with effect sizes, such that CM treatments that provide larger magnitude reinforcement are more efficacious than those that provide lower magnitude reinforcement. With prize CM, even when magnitudes of overall expected prize earnings are constant, some patients win more prizes than others. Thus, patients who win larger overall amounts of prizes during treatment may

Individual differences in nucleus accumbens dopamine receptors predict development of addiction-like behavior: a computational approach.

Clinical and experimental observations show individual differences in the development of addiction. Increasing evidence supports the hypothesis that dopamine receptor availability in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) predisposes drug reinforcement. Here, modeling striatal-midbrain dopaminergic circuit, we propose a reinforcement learning model for addiction based on the actor-critic model of striatum. Modeling dopamine receptors in the NAc as modulators of learning rate for appetitive--but not aversive--stimuli in the critic--but not the actor--we define vulnerability to addiction as a relatively lo

Pathological gambling and compulsive buying: do they fall within an obsessive-compulsive spectrum?

Both compulsive buying (CB) and pathological gambling (PG) have been proposed as members of a spectrum of disorders related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The spectrum hypothesis originated in the early 1990s and has gained considerable support, despite the lack of empirical evidence. Interest in this hypothesis has become critical because some investigators have recommended the creation of a new category that includes these disorders in DSM-5, now under development. In this article, the authors describe the origin of the obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum and its theoretical underpin

Treating the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia with alpha4beta2 neuronal nicotinic receptor agonists.

Schizophrenic patients exhibit debilitating impairments of intellectual function. Typical and atypical antipsychotic medications are largely ineffective at treating the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia (CDS), and efforts to discover compounds that treat these symptoms are ongoing. Considerable tobacco use in schizophrenic patients, genetic linkage, and receptor binding studies suggest the involvement of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in schizophrenia. Neuronal alpha4beta2 nAChRs are widely distributed in the mammalian brain, and are implicated in normal cognitive functioning in

Behavioral and neurochemical studies in distinct animal models of ethanol's motivational effects.

In the last decades, the goal of creating a unique and complete model of alcohol use and alcoholism has been replaced by a myriad of different animal models, each addressing a specific feature of problematic alcohol consumption. This mini-review highlights selected findings in the field of alcohol abuse and dependence, as found through the use of animal models. There are models (e.g., drinking in the dark, drinking after alcohol adulteration or alcohol deprivation) in which animals self-administer alcohol, that are useful to analyze determinants and consequences of binge drinking, progression

Uncoupling of reading and IQ over time: empirical evidence for a definition of dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is defined as an unexpected difficulty in reading in individuals who otherwise possess the intelligence and motivation considered necessary for fluent reading, and who also have had reasonable reading instruction. Identifying factors associated with normative and impaired reading development has implications for diagnosis, intervention, and prevention. We show that in typical readers, reading and IQ development are dynamically linked over time. Such mutual interrelationships are not perceptible in dyslexic readers, which suggests that reading and cognition develop more i

Anxiety sensitivity and perceived control over anxiety-related events: evaluating the singular and interactive effects in the prediction of anxious and fearful responding to bodily sensations.

The present investigation examined the singular and interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and perceived control over anxiety-related events in the prediction of panic symptoms using a CO(2)-enriched air biological challenge. Two hundred and twenty-nine adult participants (M(age)=21.02, SD=7.55, 124 females) were recruited from the greater Burlington, Vermont community. Results indicated that pre-challenge anxiety sensitivity, but not perceived control over anxiety-related events, significantly predicted post-challenge panic attack symptoms, anxiety focused on bodily sensations, and, inter

Drugs for relapse prevention of alcoholism: ten years of progress.

Multiple neurochemical pathways are involved in mediating craving and relapse to alcohol. Opioidergic and glutamatergic systems have a key role in alcoholism, as demonstrated by the clinically effective compounds naltrexone and acamprosate acting through these systems. The dopaminergic system has long featured in alcoholism research; hitherto disappointing results from clinical studies could improve following the discovery that dopamine D3 receptor antagonism produces consistent and robust results in preclinical studies. Corticotropin-releasing factor signalling and the endocannabinoid system

The structure of disgust: domain specificity in relation to contamination ideation and excessive washing.

The primary goal of the present study was to employ confirmatory factor analysis to compare two theoretical models regarding the factor structure of disgust (N=307). The two-factor model of Animal Reminder and Core disgust proposed by Rozin et al. (2000) demonstrated superior model fit over a one-factor model that has been implicated in prior research. However, contrary to theoretical predictions, categorizing Hygiene disgust as Core disgust rather than Animal Reminder disgust provided an overall better fit for the two-factor model. The second aim of the study was to investigate the relationsh

Associations of psychosocial factors with the stress of infertility treatment.

This study investigated psychosocial factors thought to be associated with perceived stress over the course of infertility treatment. The research was based on secondary analysis of data from the Study of Marriage, Family, and Life Quality with a sample of 128 people who completed an infertility-related stress instrument at all three measurement intervals (1988, 1999, and 1990). Self-esteem and perceived health were associated with stress at the study baseline, importance of a biological family and extent of spousal support associated with stress at the 12-month follow-up, and factors pertaini

Age-dependent changes of gap detection in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).

Gap detection using broadband noise was characterized in a group of young gerbils from the breeding colony of the University of Regensburg (RB gerbils), old RB gerbils, and old gerbils from the breeding colony of the University of South Carolina (SC gerbils). Data from old RB and old SC gerbils were not significantly different and were subsequently combined for a comparison with data from the group of young RB gerbils. Level dependence of gap-detection thresholds in young and old domesticated gerbils resembled the typical mammalian pattern of level dependence. Gap-detection thresholds of old g

Clinical perfectionism: a cognitive-behavioural analysis.

This paper reviews the characteristics of clinical perfectionism and proposes a new definition of the phenomenon. It is suggested that the defining feature of clinically significant perfectionism is the overdependence of self-evaluation on the determined pursuit (and achievement) of self-imposed personally demanding standards of performance in at least one salient domain, despite the occurrence of adverse consequences. It is suggested that such clinical perfectionism is maintained by the biased evaluation of the pursuit and achievement of personally demanding standards. Specifically, it is sug

Threat processing in women with bulimia.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments are the most commonly used approaches for bulimia nervosa. However, these treatments tend to produce only moderate remission rates. Therefore, it is useful to consider how experimental cognitive approaches can help to revise current cognitive-behavioral models of bulimia. Information processing models highlight the role of attentional biases and schema avoidance in the etiology and maintenance of pathology. This review considers how these processes relate to bulimia. In particular, a growing body of evidence suggests that bulimic behaviors may function to "block

Can contrast sensitivity functions in dyslexia be explained by inattention rather than a magnocellular deficit?

We examined whether data demonstrating contrast sensitivity losses in dyslexia that have been interpreted as evidence for loss of magnocellular visual function could be explained by inattention. Computer simulations of observers with poor concentration yielded inflated estimates of threshold that were a constant proportion of the true threshold across spatial frequencies. Data from many, but not all, studies supporting the magnocellular deficit theory are well described by these simulations, which predicted no interaction between observer group and spatial frequency. Some studies have reported
