Hydatidiform mole (HM) is a human pregnancy with no embryo but cystic degeneration of chorionic villi. The common form of this condition occurs in 1 in every 1500 pregnancies in western societies and at a higher incidence in some geographic regions and populations. Recurrent moles account for 2% of all molar cases and a few of them occur in more than one family member. By studying a familial form of recurrent moles, a recessive maternal locus responsible for this condition was mapped to 19q13.4 and causative mutations identified. Familial recurrent hydatidiform moles are a rare recessive condition in which molar tissues have biparental contribution to their genome. One maternal locus responsible for this condition has been mapped to 19q13.4 and the causative gene, NALP7, identified (HUGO-approved nomenclature is now NLRP7). The current study investigates the clinical characteristics of patients with partial molar pregnancy who developed persistent gestational trophoblastic tumor (GTT). Between January 1979 and January 1989, 16 of 240 (6.6%) patients, who were followed for partial mole, developed persistent GTT. The protoporphyrinemia of iron deficiency is well recognized. Clinically, information on the protoporphyrin/heme molar ratio in whole blood offers certain advantages over protoporphyrin measurement alone. A procedure for determining this ratio is reported. Protoporphyrin is extracted, solubilized, and measured fluorometrically. Incidental radiopacities of the jaws are commonly identified on routine intraoral and extraoral radiographs. Dentists should be able to develop a differential diagnosis of these lesions. This article presents 2 cases in which mandibular radiopacities associated with external root resorption were identified incidentally and discusses the differential diagnosis of these lesions. Both patients were referred by their general practitioners to dental specialists for further evaluation of homogenous osteosclerotic foci surrounding and resorbing the roots of the permanent mandibular right first molar.
