Position Statement of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery on Focused Ultrasound Lesioning of the Brain by Non-neurosurgeons.

Since its US Food and Drug Administration approval in 2016, magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy has grown into … y. At present, all high-level evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of MRgFUS lesions to treat movement disorders derives from procedures performed by neurosurgeons, so those results may not be generalizable to other physicians. Based on these considerations and potential liability issues, the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, which …

Objective Depression Detection Using EEG and Eye Movement Signals Induced by Oil Paintings.

Depression is a mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest, which has become one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There are currently no objective diagnostic standards for depression in clinical practice. Previous studies have shown that depression causes both brain abnormalities and behavioral disorders. In this study, both electroencephalography (EEG) and eye movement signals were used to objectively detect depression. By presenting 40 carefully selected oil paintings-20 positive and 20 negative-as stimuli, we were able to successfully evoke emotio

Consensus on Virtual Management of Vestibular Disorders: Urgent Versus Expedited Care.

The virtual practice has made major advances in the way that we care for patients in the modern era. The culture of virtual practice, consulting, and telemedicine, which had started several years ago, took an accelerated leap as humankind was challenged by the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID19). The social distancing measures and lockdowns imposed in many countries left medical care providers with limited options in evaluating ambulatory patients, pushing the rapid transition to assessments via virtual platforms. In this novel arena of medical practice, which may form new norms beyond the cu

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia: clinical features, incidence, and risk factors.

Symptoms of Parkinson's disease have been controlled with levodopa for many years; however, motor complications consisting of wearing off of medication effect and dyskinesias tend to occur within a few years of starting levodopa. Motor complications can begin a few months after taking levodopa, with the average time to onset estimated to be 6.5 years. Dyskinesias can be troublesome and require intervention. Levodopa-induced dyskinesia can be composed of a variety of movement disorders including chorea, dystonia, ballism, myoclonus, and akathisia. Based on the clinical pattern, the most common …

Climbing Fiber Development Is Impaired in Postnatal Car8 wdl Mice.

The cerebellum is critical for an array of motor functions. During postnatal development, the Purkinje cells (PCs) guide afferent topography to establish the final circuit. Perturbing PC morphogenesis or activity during development can result in climbing fiber (CF) multi-innervation or mis-patterning. Structural defects during circuit formation typically have long-term effects on behavior as they contribute to the phenotype of movement disorders such as cerebellar ataxia. The Car8 wdl mouse is one model in which early circuit destruction influences movement. However, although the loss of Car8 …

Approach to a tremor patient.

Tremors are commonly encountered in clinical practice and are the most common movement disorders seen. It is defined as a rhythmic, involuntary oscillatory movement of a body part around one or more joints. In the majority of the population, tremor tends to be mild. They have varying etiology; hence, classifying them appropriately helps in identifying the underlying cause. Clinically, tremor is classified as occurring at rest or action. They can also be classified based on their frequency, amplitude, and body part involved. Parkinsonian tremor is the most common cause of rest tremor. Essential…

A Medical Food Formulation of Griffonia simplicifolia/Magnesium for Childhood Periodic Syndrome Therapy: An Open-Label Study on Motion Sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) is a disabling condition dominated by disagreement between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement, with symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and nausea, and other autonomic disabling symptoms. Preparations of Griffonia simplicifolia, containing high concentrations of 5-HTP, might be effective for serotonin-related disorders, including MS. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to assess the efficacy and safety of the G. simplicifolia/magnesium complex in a pediatric population with MS. The Griffonia/magnesium complex (50 and 200 mg, resp

[Genetics of dystonia].

The dystonias comprise a heterogeneous group of movement disorders. In contrast to the frequent sporadic forms, a variety of rare familial forms are caused by genetic mutations with mendelian inheritance. In recent years, significant progress has been made with regard to the identification of genes causing dystonia, and to the molecular pathophysiology underlying dystonic symptoms. Currently, 18 gene loci have been described causing primary dystonia, dystonia-plus syndromes or paroxysmal dystonia. The most frequent form of inherited dystonia, according to current knowledge, is early-onset gene…

Modulation of symptomatic palatal tremor by magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex.

OBJECTIVES: Magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex can be used to determine the involvement of the cortex in rhythmic movement disorders. Symptomatic palatal tremor (SPT) is thought to come from a pacemaker that is relatively resistant to internal and external stimulation. In this study, we investigated the effect of magnetic stimulation of motor cortex on SPT. METHODS: Five male patients, aged 67-79 years, with SPT after brain stem infarction or hemorrhage, all had a synchronous mouth angle twitch with the palatal movement. Electromyographic activity was recorded with a monopolar needle el…

[The role of the hyoid bone in the act of deglutition after horizontal epiglottic laryngectomy].

Results of ++roentgeno-cinematographic studies of the deglutition act in patients after horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy are presented. The analysis of the material has been expected to provide an answer to what an extent the removal or the preservation of hyoid bone does influence the disorders that involve the swallowing. The entire elaborated material comprises 51 deglutition acts, having been divided into 3 groups. In the I group of studied subjects it was observed that there was a more sizable shortening of the pharynx, as well as a greater upward and forward movement of the remaining

Capsular constriction of the hip: arthrographic and clinical considerations.

Orthodox radiological examination of patients presenting with disorders of the hip, usually on account of pain and limitation of movement, may vary in diagnostic value. As a supplementary study we have employed arthrography. During this procedure we have, since 1970, routinely assessed the capacity of the joint capsule. The normal capacity varies from 20 ml in a large adult male to 14 ml in a small adult female. Significant reduction of this volume has been observed as a secondary complication of certain organic lesions, including four cases of synovial chondromatosis, one case of an intra-art

Relationship between finger movement characteristics and brain voxel-based morphometry.

BACKGROUND: Aging is the most significant risk factor for dementia. Alzheimer's disease (AD) accounts for approximately 60-80% of all dementia cases in older adults. This study aimed to examine the relationship between finger movements and brain volume in AD patients using a voxel-based reginal analysis system for Alzheimer's disease (VSRAD) software. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with AD at the Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders were included. The diagnostic criteria were based on the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association. A finger-tapping device was u

Low-frequency oscillations in cortical level to help diagnose task-specific dystonia.

Task-specific dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that abnormal contractions of muscles result in the twisting of fixed postures or muscle spasm during specific tasks. Due to the rareness and the pathophysiology of the disease, there is no test to confirm the diagnosis of task-specific dystonia, except comprehensive observations by the experts. Evidence from neural electrophysiological data suggests that enhanced low frequency (4-12 Hz) oscillations in the subcortical structure of the globus pallidus were associated with the pathological abnormalities concerning β and γ rhythms in mot
