The authors presented results of retrospective epidemical and clinical evaluation of 101 patients with carcinoma of hypopharynx. 42 of them were treated surgically or combined method. 29.7% of them survived 3 years and 23.5%--5 years. Radiotherapy was applied in 52 cases--25.6% of them survived 3 years, and 19.9%--5 years. 28.4% of the patients survived 3 years and 21.5%--5 years.

The medical records of 45 horses treated for suspected squamous cell carcinoma of the penis and/or prepuce were reviewed. The age of 40 horses was known, and these had a mean age of 17.4 years. 8 cases of supraglottic or transglottic carcinoma with neck lymphatic metastasis received a modified laryngectomy or subtotal laryngectomy combined with radical neck dissection. Laryngeal function was reconstructed in 3 of them. No postoperative complication occurred. All cases survived uneventfully through a five-year following up, except one who died of neck lymphatic and lung metastasis. The indication, procedure and advantage of this operation are discussed in this article.

Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (Bazex syndrome) is a rare but distinctive dermatosis associated with carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract with possible cervical lymph node metastases. The cutaneous lesions occurring in the syndrome are non-metastatic skin involvement that parallels (as cutaneous marker) the evolution of the malignancy. Since only a few case reports have been published in the otolaryngologic literature, we present our experience and review some of the findings previously reported.

We present the results of a retrospective study of 467 patients treated with conservative surgery for glottic carcinomas at the ENT department of the "Gregorio Maranon" Hospital between 1962-1993. The disease was staged using the criteria set forth in 1988 by the AJCC, and 27.7% patients were intermediate to advanced stages. Our theoretic treatment protocol is presented. The 5 years uncorrected actuarial survival related to stage was 85.6%, 71.4% and 71% for stages I, II and III respectively. In stages I and II local failure occurred in 22.4% when patients were treated by laryngofisure and 10.

Our study focuses on a series of 1344 cases of carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx treated between 1973 and 1992. Brachytherapy was always performed with iridium 192, either alone or in combination with external-beam irradiation or with surgery for the treatment of the primary tumor. In a search for clues to the origin of squamous cell skin cancer (SCC), the authors investigated the pattern of new cancers in a cohort of 5,100 SCC patients whose tumors were diagnosed during the years 1978-1989 and recorded in the Danish Cancer Registry. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs with great frequency in Asia. It is an infiltrative tumor that often produces no symptoms early in its course. However, the proximity of the nasopharynx to the nasal cavity, eustachian tubes, masticatory muscles, and cranial nerves can allow extension of the lesion into these structures, resulting in numerous maxillofacial abnormalities. We report a case of secondary squamous cell carcinoma of the appendix causing spontaneous extravasation of urine and urinoma formation. On the basis of clinical findings, we interpret this rare lesion as metastatic from a cervical carcinoma surgically resected 8 years earlier. Ureteral continuity was restored by retrograde catheterization and the urinoma was drained percutaneously. The final diagnosis was made at laparotomy.
