Facial palsy following cochlear implantation.

Owing to its anatomical location, the facial nerve (FN) is at risk of damage during cochlear implantation, especially during posterior tympanotomy. The aim of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the risk of FN palsy following cochlear implantation surgery via mastoidectomy and posterior tympanotomy approach (facial recess). This is a retrospective study. The data bank of patients who received a cochlear implant between 2000 and 2012 was analyzed. 3403 surgeries were done during this period. Records of the patients who had suffered from FN palsy were evaluated and the type of FN palsy, the s

Quantification of gait in dystonic Gunn rats.

Spontaneously jaundiced Gunn rats exposed to sulfadimethoxine develop bilirubin encephalopathy (kernicterus) with hearing loss and dystonia, closely resembling the human syndrome. We recently characterized the electromyographic activity in this animal model supporting our clinical impression of dystonia. The objective of this study was to develop a simple, non-invasive method to quantify the motor deficits in dystonic rodents. On postnatal day 16, Gunn rats were treated with 100mg/kg of sulfadimethoxine or saline. On postnatal day 31, the ventral view of the animals was videotaped while the an

Tactile-associated recruitment of the cervical cord is altered in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the brain have shown that cortical reorganization might contribute to a more favourable clinical outcome of multiple sclerosis (MS). In order to assess whether fMRI changes can also be detected in the spinal cord from patients with MS, and to investigate their nature and extent, twenty-five patients and 12 matched healthy controls were scanned during a tactile stimulation of the palm of the right hand. The task-related mean signal change was computed for all activated voxels within the cervical cord and, separately, in the right and left

The neurobiological basis of reading.

The results from studies using positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in adults have largely revealed the involvement of left-hemisphere perisylvian areas in the reading process, including extrastriate visual cortex, inferior parietal regions, superior temporal gyrus, and inferior frontal cortex. Although the recruitment of these regions varies with the particular reading-related task, general networks of regions seem to be uniquely associated with different components of the reading process. For example, visual word form processing is associated wi

Vagal stimulation for reciprocal coupling between glottic and upper esophageal sphincter activities in the canine.

Glottic adduction couples with relaxation of the tonically contracted upper esophageal sphincter (UES) to constitute the end point of pharyngeal swallowing. Together with deglutitive laryngeal elevation, this reciprocal relationship contributes to protecting the lungs from aspiration. Degrees of uncoordination between glottic and upper esophageal sphincters can be seen under diverse circumstances of neurologic damage such as stroke, gastroesophageal reflux, and in the growing elderly population presenting with weaker musculature. We hypothesized that reciprocal coupling between glottic closure

[Central depressant effect of l-tetrahydroberberine-d-camphor sulfonate (THB-CS). Electroencephalographic study].

Effects of l-tetrahydroberberine-d-camphor sulfonate (THB-CS) on spontaneous EEG, arousal response and recruiting response were investigated in rabbits and rats in comparison with those of chlorpromazine. The spontaneous EEG recorded from the motor cortex and hippocampus showed a prominent resting pattern 3-5 min after intravenous administration of THB-CS in doses more than 0.01 mg/kg in rabbits and 30 min after oral administration of the drug in doses more than 1 mg/kg in rats. These effects lasted for 30-60 min after i.v. administration and 60-90 min after oral administration; however, the e

Cognitive state monitoring for neuroadaptive information visualization.

In today's digital world, we face an overwhelming influx of information daily. Information Visualisation (InfoVis) serves as a promising approach to alleviate this "information overload" issue by providing timely, effective, and adaptive visual representations. Despite its potential, previous research has under-explored the critical role of users' cognitive states in facilitating more natural interactions. This article bridges this research gap by first presenting a comprehensive review of current methodologies for assessing cognitive states through neurophysiological signal analysis. Specific

Core Stability Training for Post-Stroke Recovery: A Multifaceted Approach to Enhance Postural Control and Motor Function.

Stroke survivors commonly experience deficits in postural control and motor function, significantly impacting their independence and quality of life. Core Stability Training (CST) has emerged as a promising intervention to address these challenges. This review explores the multifaceted mechanisms by which CST promotes recovery, including: Biomechanical: CST strengthens the core musculature, providing a stable foundation for limb movement and optimizing force transmission throughout the kinetic chain. Neurophysiological: CST drives neural plasticity through repetitive, task-specific sensorimoto

The effect of hand dominance on results in the Functional Head Impulse Test.

OBJECTIVE: The vestibulo-ocular reflex is essential for maintaining visual stability during head movements. Individual neurophysiological characteristics, such as hand dominance, may influence vestibular responses through hemispheric lateralisation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hand dominance on functional vestibulo-ocular reflex performance using the Functional Head Impulse Test. METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy volunteers were classified as right- or left-handed using the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory. Functional Head Impulse Test reading scores were obtained during passive ri

Map-based spatial perspective taking reveals frontal late negativity loss and posterior delta gain in mild cognitive impairment.

Spatial disorientation represents a clinically meaningful vulnerability during aging and is an early manifestation along the Alzheimer's disease continuum. Understanding how aging-related central nervous system (CNS) changes affect the neural computations required for spatial perspective taking (SPT) is essential for characterizing early neurodegenerative processes. In this study, older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) completed a simplified map-based SPT paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Although behavioral accuracy was

From normative values to pain assessment models: A large-scale study of laser-evoked brain responses.

Accurately assessing pain remains challenging due to its inherently subjective nature, highlighting the need for normative and objective neural indicators to support pain diagnosis. Using large-scale electroencephalography (EEG) datasets (N = 936), the present study establishes normative values for laser-evoked brain responses (LEP) and develops a predictive model of perceived pain intensity. Three major findings emerged. First, we characterized the typical EEG features elicited by nociceptive laser stimuli and constructed their normative reference ranges using normative modeling. Second, with

Roles in brain stimulation, recording and interpreting neuroimaging data: a systematic survey of 26 countries on current practices in EEG, MRI, TCD, TMS and FUS.

INTRODUCTION: Clear role definitions in performing and interpreting neurophysiological and neuroimaging procedures are essential for patient safety and diagnostic accuracy. There is currently no comprehensive overview of the international landscape of health professionals responsible for these tasks. In the present review, we aimed to summarize local practices for electroencephalography (EEG), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial Doppler (TCD), and focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS). METHODS: We systematically searched scientific lite
