INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the knee ligaments, menisci, and cartilage are possible in high-velocity trauma as in road traffic accidents. Similarly, these structures can be disrupted in proximal tibia fractures. We present a series of three cases which had a previously undescribed injury combination.
CASE PRESENTATION: The first and second patients presented primarily to us following fall from motorbikes. Both these patients had injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral meniscus body and posterior root tear, and osteochondral fracture of postero

BACKGROUND: Surgical fixation of tibial plateau fracture in elderly patients with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) provides inferior outcomes compared with younger patients. Primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be of benefit in elderly patients with a combination of osteoporotic bone and metaphyseal comminution. However, there continues to be conflicting evidence on the use of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau fracture. This systematic review was performed to quantify the outcomes and perioperative complication rates of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau frac

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis, characterized by poikiloderma, small stature, juvenile cataracts, sparse hair, skeletal abnormalities, and a predisposition to osteogenic sarcomas and skin cancers. Although numerous skeletal abnormalities have been described in patients with Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, to our knowledge, only 1 study has shown evidence of delayed fracture healing in a patient with Rothmund-Thomson syndrome. We present the case of a 13-year-old female diagnosed with Rothmund-Thomson syndrome who demonstrated delayed union of her fifth metata

OBJECTIVE: Fractures of the capitellum and trochlea constitute less than 1% of all elbow fractures and a shear fracture involving the capitellum and extending medially into most of the trochlea is rarely reported. Type IV capitellum fracture is still controversial in regard to its radiographic appearance, surgical approach and osteosynthesis. We report 10 cases of type IV capitellum fracture with a view to elucidating its clinical features and treatment outcome.
METHODS: We treated 10 patients of type IV capitellum fracture with a mean age of 32 years. A uniform surgical approach and postoper

We reported a 23-year-old man who was involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident. He sustained a closed fracture at the right distal femur. The primary fracture happened on February 2008. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation with cloverleaf plate. And one hundred days after the surgery, the proximal screws were pulled-out, but the bone union was not achieved. Treatment consisted of exchanging the cloverleaf plate with a locking compression plate and using an auto-iliac bone graft to fill the nonunion gap. In July 2009, the patient had a sharp pain in the right lower limb. The X-

We report here a rare case of insufficiency fracture at the distal diaphysis of the radius in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after synovectomy combined with the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure. A 71-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with RA had been consecutively treated with several disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. She had undergone synovectomy of the right wrist combined with the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure, due to a tendon rupture, 2 years before the current presentation (first visit). Although she had not experienced any recent trauma, the wrist pain had increased after she had l

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) is widely used for femoral neck fractures, particularly in elderly patients. However, complications such as the rare dissociation of the bipolar cup can severely impact outcomes. This study aims to investigate iatrogenic BHA dissociation following closed reduction, identify risk factors, and discuss preventive strategies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent BHA for femoral neck fractures at our institution between 2019 and 2024. Included patients had a minimum post-operative survival of 3 months. Para

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is one of the autosomal dominant spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) diseases characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia, muscle atrophy, and peripheral neuropathy. We report the management of a 43-year-old man with SCA1 who underwent general anesthesia for open reduction and internal fixation of a mandibular fracture. Although anesthesia-induced vocal cord paralysis has been reported in patients with SCD, nasotracheal intubation was performed uneventfully with video laryngoscope. After taking into consideration the increased risk of postoperative respir

A 60-year-old female sustained a distal radius fracture and underwent open reduction internal fixation with a volar locking plate. The patient had an uneventful recovery until four months postoperatively when the patient clinically regressed, and an expansile, radiolucent metaepiphyseal lesion was found. Further workup revealed this was a giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB). Definitive management consisted of extensive curettage, cryoablation, and cementation of the lesion, and the hardware was left intact. The current case presents an uncommon presentation of GCTB. The case illuminates the import

Arthroscopy of the wrist has gained popularity among hand and wrist surgeons for diagnosing and treating wrist pathologies. In general, it is a minimally-invasive procedure which can be performed in day care surgery. It has a higher diagnostic accuracy compared to conventional imaging modalities such as CT or MRI. Simultaneous therapeutic intervention can be performed such as ligament repair, fracture reduction, ganglion cyst removal or synovectomy of the wrist. Recent studies have shown better functional outcomes and fewer complications compared to open surgical interventions. Prospective stu

Charcot arthropathy is a progressive condition primarily affecting the lower limbs in patients with diabetes mellitus. It is a rare complication of diabetic neuropathy and if left untreated can lead to severe limb destruction necessitating major amputation. Here, we report the case of a 41-year-old female who presented with rapidly progressive Charcot foot over a 10-day period, necessitating open reduction and internal fixation of Lisfranc-type fracture dislocations. Her presentation with a rapidly progressing red, swollen foot with a blister on the plantar aspect prompted initial treatment on

A bioresorbable syndesmotic screw was used successfully for fixation in 4 patients, 3 with a bimalleolar Weber type-C ankle fracture and 1 with a Maisonneuve-type injury. The 5-mm screw consisted of a polyglycolic acid/polylactic acid copolymer placed in standard fashion at the time of open reduction and internal fixation. The patients healed without difficulty, and follow-up radiographs showed anatomic maintenance of the syndesmotic space. There were no resorption problems. Signs of minimal irritation were noted at the screw-head site in 2 patients at 3 to 4 months after surgery, but the irri
