PURPOSE: This is a unique case report of a self-inflicted orbital injury that presented as a simple upper vestibulum laceration. A 43-year-old man presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit with a small laceration in his mouth and complaints of pain in his left eye due to a snooker cue penetration. Upon admission, clinical findings included a small laceration on the upper left vestibulum and a subdermal hematoma in the left eye lid with restricted movements of the left eye. Further examination revealed remote trauma to the orbit, penetrating through the oral cavity, passing the maxil…

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic orbital haemorrhage is an uncommon complication of the alloplastic implants used in post-traumatic orbital floor repair. The small case series or individual reports provide no definite causative explanation for this delayed bleeding around silicone implants. It is likely that it is related to the disruption of fine capillaries within the pseudocapsule surrounding the implant, since the material does cause low-grade irritation with evidence of chronic inflammation.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient who developed a spontaneous periprosthetic bleeding 18 yea…

Adult orbital xanthogranulomatous disease (AOXGD) is a rare granulomatous disorder, which has four subtypes: adult-onset xanthogranuloma (AOX), adult-onset asthma with periocular xanthogranuloma, necrobiotic xanthogranuloma and Erdheim-Chester disease. We report a 42-year-old woman who presented with yellowish nonulcerative nodules on her eyelids. On histopathological examination of a nodule, mild degeneration of collagen fibres was seen, with surrounding infiltration of numerous foam cells and Touton giant cells in the deep dermis. Lymphoid follicles were seen in the reticular dermis. There w…

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify the clinical presentation of idiopathic non-specific orbital inflammations (NSI) in relation to the anatomic pattern of involvement in the orbit and to evaluate the treatment options.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 35 cases of patients with NSI were retrospectively reviewed. In all cases the diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy of the lesion. 10 patients exhibited a severe amount of fibrosis in biopsy specimens in terms of an idiopathic sclerosing non-specific orbital inflammation (SNSI). The patients were treated with corticosteroids, radiotherapy or sur…

Feline orbital aspergillosis is increasingly described in the published reports and may be an emerging disease. Orbital mycotic infections were diagnosed in three cats with exophthalmos, significant dorso-temporal globe deviation and pronounced resistance to retropulsion. Advanced imaging was performed in all three cases to evaluate the extent of disease as well as to obtain guided orbital biopsies in two cases. Surgical intervention in the form of a lateral orbitotomy was pursued in the first case with the other two cases treated with enucleation or medical management alone. The available pub…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment of minor exophthalmos by enlargement of orbital volume through conjunctive approach.
METHODS: Through the conjunctive approach medial to the eye ball, the dissection was performed subperiosteally to expose the ethmoid bone at the medial orbital wall. The exposure bone was 2.5-3.0 cm in length and 2.0-2.5 cm in width. Then the ethmoid bone was fractured to enlarge the orbital volume. From June 2006 to April 2008, 3 cases were treated.
RESULTS: The patients recovered in a short time with no visible skin scar. The technique was mini-invasive, and didn't a…

Commercial sub-orbital operators will soon offer the excitement of traveling to space to thousands of people. Based on previous experience in space flight and parabolic flight, sensorimotor disruptions in eye movements, postural stability, and motor coordination are likely in these travelers. Here we propose a framework for developing strategies to overcome these sensorimotor disruptions. We delineate how approaches should differ from those applied to orbital flight and between sub-orbital passengers and pilots based on differing frequency of flights and mission objectives. Sensorimotor adapta…

A new model of orbital implant, matching the low cost of acrylic implants (PMMA) with the advantages of medpor (Porex) is presented herein. The new implant model consists of a PMMA implant with a dura mater scrap adhered on its anterior face of the same diameter of the acrylic implant and a medpor snip adhered on its posterior face by sterile cyanoacrylate. Dura mater was fixed to medpor with 6.0 mono-nylon. One patient who presented previous extrusion of the implant was submitted to surgery and was evaluated on the 1st, 7th, 15th, 30th postoperative days, and 3 and 6 months after surgery when…

Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a complex disease caused by a variety of pathological factors, and trauma is one of the main factors/causes. Clinical data of 17 cases of traumatic OAS treated by nasal endoscopic surgery in our department from January 2002 to April 2009 were gathered and reviewed. Among them, the six patients presented with OAS after injury to the lateral wall of orbital apex. Seven other patients exhibited OAS after injury to the medial wall of orbital apex, two displayed OAS after zygomatic trauma, while OAS manifested in the other two patients with craniocerebral trauma 3 day…

Orbital floor fractures, often combined with zygomatic fractures, are common fractures of the midface. Surgery of orbital fractures is done to free incarcerated or prolapsed orbital tissue and to restore the anatomic skeletal size of the orbit. Lyodura was a standard for the reconstruction of the orbital floor until cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were reported, so that polydioxanone (PDS) is widely used today. However, infections around the implant are reported. In a randomized controlled clinical study on 24 patients with orbital floor defects of approximately 1 cm, we evaluated the use o…
