Predicting response to transdiagnostic iCBT for emotional disorders from patient and therapist involvement.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic iCBT has been shown to be effective for the treatment of emotional disorders. Less is known about the optimal level of therapist and patient involvement in these interventions. Specific characteristics of Internet-delivered interventions include treatment adherence (e.g., amount of review of the materials) and guidance (e.g., amount of therapist support). Exploring the importance of these elements in treatment outcome may help to maximize the efficiency of Internet-delivered psychological interventions. AIM: In this study, we aimed to analyze the relationship betwe

Child and adolescent mental health disorders in the GCC: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with a predominant 'youth bulge' among its 54 million people, has witnessed an exponential increase in research pertinent to child and adolescent mental health (CAMH). Aside from a few narrative reviews, to date, no critical appraisal examining the magnitude of CAMH has emerged from this region. AIMS: This study aimed to report the prevalence rates of CAMH disorders in the GCC through a systematic review of the existing literature followed by a meta-analysis. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature from the six GCC countries (Bahrain, Ku

Trauma informed interventions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Health inequities remain a public health concern. Chronic adversity such as discrimination or racism as trauma may perpetuate health inequities in marginalized populations. There is a growing body of the literature on trauma informed and culturally competent care as essential elements of promoting health equity, yet no prior review has systematically addressed trauma informed interventions. The purpose of this study was to appraise the types, setting, scope, and delivery of trauma informed interventions and associated outcomes. METHODS: We performed database searches- PubMed, Emba

Medical cannabis use in the United States: a retrospective database study.

INTRODUCTION: Growing interest in the medicinal properties of cannabis has led to an increase in its use to treat medical conditions, and the establishment of state-specific medical cannabis programs. Despite medical cannabis being legal in 33 states and the District of Colombia, there remains a paucity of data characterizing the patients accessing medical cannabis programs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a registry with data from 33 medical cannabis evaluation clinics in the United States, owned and operated by CB2 Insights. Data were collected primarily by face-to-face interviews for

The Effects of Waiting for Treatment: A Meta-Analysis of Waitlist Control Groups in Randomized Controlled Trials for Social Anxiety Disorder.

UNLABELLED: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent mental disorder. However, little is known about how SAD changes in subjects who do not receive treatment. Waitlist control groups (WLCGs) are frequently included in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the treatment of mental disorders. Data from WLCGs are of value as they provide information on the untreated short-term course of a disorder and may serve as disorder-specific norms of change (benchmarks) against which treatment outcomes of SAD can be compared. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis focusing on the effects occurring i

A randomised controlled trial comparing standard or intensive management of reduced fetal movements after 36 weeks gestation--a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Women presenting with reduced fetal movements (RFM) in the third trimester are at increased risk of stillbirth or fetal growth restriction. These outcomes after RFM are related to smaller fetal size on ultrasound scan, oligohydramnios and lower human placental lactogen (hPL) in maternal serum. We performed this study to address whether a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the management of RFM was feasible with regard to: i) maternal recruitment and retention ii) patient acceptability, iii) adherence to protocol. Additionally, we aimed to confirm the prevalence of poor perinatal

Role of corticotropin-releasing factor pathways in stress-related alterations of colonic motor function and viscerosensibility in female rodents.

BACKGROUND: Clinical reports have shown that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is comorbid with anxiety/depression and stress-related events, and that the disorder is more prevalent among women than among men. In rodents, colorectal distention (CRD) induces abdominal contractions, and this visceromotor response is used to assess visceral pain. The activation of brain corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) pathways has a key role in the behavioral and visceral responses to stress. OBJECTIVE: In this review of experimental studies that delineate the underlying mechanisms of the stress response, we f

Neural oscillations serving abstract reasoning are differentially associated with inflammatory markers in people with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Despite living a normal lifespan, people with HIV (PWH) are at a much greater risk of developing cognitive impairment. While the precise mechanisms are not fully understood, persistently high inflammation levels are thought to be a key contributor, as multiple studies have linked cognitive impairment and elevated inflammation. In contrast, evidence of a relationship between neural function and inflammatory activity is extremely limited in PWH and/or controls. Thus, in the current study, we integrate state-of-the-art dynamic functional brain mapping with measures of three inflamma

Applying machine learning to understand factors predicting pharmacotherapy for mental health support among adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience health disparities, including in their mental health. This often leads to disproportionate use of psychotropic medications, sometimes leading to serious side effects. We used machine learning to analyze an integrated dataset (years 2018-2022) from one U.S. state with 2907 observations and 850 variables to determine what factors were most predictive of pharmacotherapy use to support mental health needs among people with IDD. Our algorithm performed strongly, with the presence of mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, d

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures in the older adult.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, as a functional neurological symptom disorder. This disorder is often misdiagnosed as epilepsy, with the consequence that older adults may have been treated for years for epilepsy before they learn their seizures are non-epileptic. Video electroencephalography monitoring, which is the standardized approach for ruling out epilepsy, is often performed in a specialized epilepsy monitoring unit where the patient lies in bed 24 hours per day waiting for a seizure to be

[The organic disorders in the course of Lyme disease].

In the last decade the number of patients with Lyme disease has been continuously growing worldwide including Poland. Psychiatric examinations with the help of psychometric tests were performed in the group of 77 patients with arthritis, in 20 with neuroborreliosis and 26 with erythema migrans. First evaluations started before antibiotic therapy, second 5-6 months after the treatment, third one year since the first assessment. Mental state examinations and psychometric testing revealed in majority of the patients, mainly in those suffered from neuroborreliosis and erythrema migrans evidence of

Changes in heart rate and respiration rate in patients with vestibular dysfunction following head movements which provoke dizziness.

Patients with vestibular dysfunction often complain of additional symptoms typical of panic disorder and/or hyperventilation. This study investigated whether autonomic and respiratory symptoms reported by patients with vestibular disorders were associated with objective changes in heart and respiration rate following head movements provoking dizziness. Subjective ratings of symptoms and anxiety and objective measures of heart and respiration rate were obtained from 29 patients and 16 healthy controls immediately before and after the subjects performed three standardised sets of vigorous head m

Responses to smoking-related stimuli and early relapse to smoking.

Prior to engaging in treatment for smoking cessation, subjects were tested for their responsiveness to cigarette smoking cues. Subjects performed a role-play with a confederate who lit their preferred brand of cigarette. Heart rate (HR) and galvanic skin conductance were assessed continuously, while urge to smoke and anxiety were rated subjectively after the role-play. Three months after treatment ended, subjects were divided into groups of continuous quitters, verified by expired carbon monoxide measurement, and relapsers. The results showed a significant difference between the groups in the
