Relationship Factors and Condom Use Among Women with a History of Intimate Partner Violence.

Women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) are at increased risk for HIV infection. To further the understanding of the dyadic factors that impact condom use among women, we investigated the impact of three relationship factors (i.e., power, fear, and dependence) on the association between HIV-related information, motivation, and behavioral skills [constructs from the information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model] and condom use among abused women. Data from 133 urban, low-income women recruited from several community-based agencies (e.g., domestic violence agencies, women's h

Overviewing a Nurse-Led, Community-Based HIV PEP Program: Applying the Extant Literature in Frontline Practice.

This clinical concept paper overviews a program to facilitate access to postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. The project, which was a collaborative initiative involving the local School of Nursing, public health unit, AIDS service organization, hospital-based HIV clinic, and an outpatient pharmacy, was implemented to circumvent common barriers to care identified in the literature. In this project, persons who present to one of the two participating clinics after having come, or likely having come, into contact with HIV within the previous 72 hr

Leucodepletion for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) have been recognised around the world for many years. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), one of the human forms of TSE, has been studied widely and thus far has not proved a great threat to human health. The emergence of two new TSEs--bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans in the UK--has caused great concern. BSE has had an economic impact and vCJD is a threat to human health. It has been shown that these two diseases are caused by the same prion agent and are linked. Research indica

[Management in sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis (chronic respiratory failure)].

1. The high risk groups for chronic respiratory failure due to pulmonary tuberculosis were identified based on the chest X-ray sketches on the TB Registration Cards in a health center. They showed 10.8-14.8% of mortality which was highly related to respiratory failure (ca 64%). To prevent developing acute exacerbation, they were educated collectively in daily care at the health center and were introduced to medical services immediately upon demand. 2. The 248 patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure or pre-respiratory failure due to pulmonary tuberculosis were divided into three gro

Immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases among pregnant employees in Germany. A situation analysis before the introduction of the Measles Protection Act.

BACKGROUND: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases prior to pregnancy is an important measure of primary prevention both for the mother and the unborn child. We analyzed immunity rates against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and pertussis in pregnant employees in Germany prior to significant changes in legal conditions in 2020, to provide a basis of comparison for future research. METHODS: We analyzed occupational-medical routine data in three collectives of pregnant women with an occupational risk of infection in the years 2018 and 2019: 1: hospital staff with regular access t

Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards hepatitis B virus among healthcare workers: a cross-sectional, hospital-based study in Montserrado County, Liberia.

Prevention is critical in safeguarding against the spread of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare workers (HCWs) regarding the disease play an important role in its prevention or spread, yet in this regard, data in Liberia remains scarce. Hence, determining the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) level of HCWs toward HBV infection becomes necessary. A descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted among 251 HCWs at two major health facilities in Monrovia. KAP regarding HBV was assessed using a standardized structured ques

"It's burning down there": A Mixed-Methods Study on Sexually Transmitted and Other Vaginal Infections Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally, with adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) disproportionately affected due to intersecting biological, behavioral, structural, and social determinants. While HIV prevention receives sustained attention, other STIs remain under-addressed despite high prevalence and increased HIV transmission risk. This study explored STI- and vaginal infection-related knowledge, attitudes, experiences, and health-seeking behaviors among South African AGYW. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods app

"It's Finding the Time to Prioritize Ourselves": Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explore Young Black Women's Attitudes, Norms, and Beliefs Toward Mental Health Care.

Across the United States, Black women are likely to have unmet mental health needs, with greater personal, social, and structural barriers to mental health treatment compared to other groups. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may help to conceptualize young Black women’s mental health beliefs and help-seeking behaviors. The current study aimed to use the TPB framework and a concurrent mixed methods approach to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs toward seeking mental health care among a sample of young Black women from community settings. The sample consisted of 33 Black wome

Strengthening Health Science Communication in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Policy and Technology Perspective.

Effective health communication remains a critical challenge across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where systemic barriers hinder disease prevention and healthcare equity. This evidence synthesis evaluates communication interventions through a comprehensive analysis of behavioral strategies, mobile health innovations, and community engagement approaches. Our findings reveal short message service (SMS)-based systems significantly improve malaria management outcomes, while demonstrating limited efficacy for chronic disease contexts. Behavioral interventions show particular promise for maternal care de

Advancing early and equitable detection of dementia: key learnings/challenges, recent innovations, and future directions.

Worldwide, over half of all individuals with dementia are undiagnosed. In the United States, racial, ethnic, and economic inequities mirror global findings, with higher rates of missed and delayed diagnosis and poorer diagnostic quality among minoritized and disadvantaged groups. For example, delayed diagnosis is more prevalent among people identifying as non-Hispanic Black or Latino than non-Hispanic White. Systematic efforts to improve detection can increase diagnosis rates; there is broad consensus that earlier detection and initiation of focused care and support services benefit both affec

Addressing health equity in pediatric surgical care in the United States- Progress and challenges.

There are notable inequities in health outcomes for children based on their social determinants of health (SDOH), including where they are born and live, their primary language, their race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and more. These health inequities are not restricted to resource limited settings; here we highlight three broad topics that are relevant to pediatric surgeons in the United States (US): access to care and disparities, and examples of inequities in firearm-related injuries and appendicitis. Most of our patients will at some point require operative interventions, yet there

Working towards a master patient index and unique identifiers to improve health systems: the example of Myanmar.

In the health systems of many countries, there is neither a requirement to collect a minimum set of demographic information during patient registration nor a standard way of identifying patients. This impedes the provision of integrated, good-quality care for individual patients and, at the system level, prevents generation of the high-quality data necessary for effective management and continuous improvement. Assigning each patient a unique identifier (UID) to create a master patient index (MPI) is therefore essential to ensure data interoperability across all the points of patient care withi

Factors Affecting the Referral Rate of the Hoarding Disorder at Primary Mental Health Care in Quebec.

Hoarding disorder (HD) places an important burden on people with HD, on their family members and society. In this paper we evaluate help-seeking in HD at primary mental health, measured in referral rate, together with its individual, environmental and structural correlates. We conducted an aggregate study by combining existing official data with our own survey data at the catchment area level. We found a mean annual referral rate of 1.58 (SD = 1.79) cases of HD in primary mental health facilities per 10,000 of adult population. The referrals rate correlated with socio-demographic characteristi
