Conditions of captivity of primates used in biomedical research may have deleterious effects on the welfare of the animals and consequently on the reliability of the research. We investigated the effects of cage size and cage complexity, two fundamental characteristics of captive conditions, on the behaviour of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus jacchus). We found an increase in the general level of activity and significant variation in the frequencies of specific behaviours with an increase in cage size and also with cage complexity. Stereotyped behaviours, which occurred in the small ca…

It is widely accepted that dyslexics have deficits in reading and phonological awareness, but there is increasing evidence that they also exhibit visual processing abnormalities that may be confined to particular portions of the visual system. In primate visual pathways, inputs from parvocellular or magnocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus remain partly segregated in projections to extrastriate cortical areas specialized for processing colour and form versus motion. In studies of dyslexia, psychophysical and anatomical evidence indicate an anomaly in the magnocellular visual subs

Young rhesus macaques housed in outdoor corn cribs and fed a commercially prepared primate diet became weak, depressed, were reluctant to move, and expressed locomotor abnormalities. Thirteen severely affected animals were hospitalized for evaluation. Physical examination disclosed swellings and instabilities involving the ends of long bones. Radiography confirmed physeal fractures in 11 of 13 animals. Affected bones included the distal femur, proximal humerus, distal tibia/fibula, and distal radius/ulna. Other, less obvious changes were noted on radiographs. Anemia was a consistent finding. A

Degeneration of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons in primate models of Parkinson's disease (PD) leads to an overactivity of excitatory glutamatergic projections from the subthalamic nucleus (STN) to the output nuclei of the basal ganglia resulting in rigidity and akinesia. The selective alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) antagonist 6-nitro-sulfamoyl-benzo-quinoxaline-dione (NBQX) and the competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist 3-carboxy-piperazin-propyl phosphonic acid (CPP) ameliorate parkinsonian symptomatology when co-administered with threshold doses of

The neural mechanisms that mediate a primate model of tardive dyskinesia have been investigated using the 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) uptake technique. Three groups of Cebus monkeys were used. Some of the animals received long-term neuroleptic treatment. These animals were allotted to one of two groups depending on whether they developed tardive dyskinesia or not. A third group of animals served as untreated controls. The neuroleptic-treated dyskinetic animals showed reduced uptake of 2-DG in the medial segment of the globus pallidus and in the ventral anterior (VA) and ventral lateral (VL) nuclei o

Subunit VIIa of mammalian cytochrome c oxidase (COX; EC 1.9.3.1) exists in at least two isoforms, one present in all tissue types ('liver' isoform; COX VIIa-L) and the other specific for cardiac and skeletal muscle (COX VIIa-M). We have isolated a full-length cDNA encoding human COX VIIa-M. The deduced polypeptide represents the human ortholog of COX VIIa-M, as it shares 78% identity with bovine COX VIIa-M, but only 63% identity with human COX VIIa-L. Northern-blot analysis of primate tissues demonstrated that COXVIIa-M mRNA is present only in muscle tissues; in contrast, the COXVIIa-L mRNA is

Removal of a rectus muscle results in permanent interruption of blood flow in the corresponding anterior ciliary artery, predisposing to anterior segment ischemia (ASI). A subhuman primate model of ASI was developed in order to study a novel muscle tuck procedure designed to preserve anterior ciliary artery circulation. Fluorescein angiograms were obtained before and after surgery to determine the effect of the muscle surgery on iris circulation. A total of 12 eyes from 12 cynomolgus monkeys underwent strabismus surgery consisting of tenectomy of all 4 rectus muscles in 3 eyes, tenectomy of 3

Histatins are a group of histidine-rich polypeptides found in human parotid and submandibular gland secretions. These polypeptides are microbiocidal, possibly involved in maintaining the acquired enamel pellicle, and enhance the glycolytic activity of certain oral micro-organisms. Histatins 1, 3 and 5 are homologous proteins with 38, 32 and 24 amino acid residues, respectively; the cDNAs coding for histatins 1 and 3 have now been isolated and sequenced. The cDNA sequences were highly homologous but contained differences throughout their length, indicating that they arise from different genes t

1. Experimental models of ballism, chorea and Parkinson's disease have been developed in the primate, and the underlying neural mechanisms which mediate these disorders of movement have been investigated using the 2-deoxyglucose uptake technique. 2. In ballism, the subthalamic nucleus is either lesioned or underactive. Because of the excitatory nature of subthalamic efferent fibres, this leads to abnormal underactivity of neurons in the medical segment of the globus pallidus which project to the ventral anterior and ventral lateral nuclei of the thalamus, and to the pedunculopontine nucleus of

Antiendomysial antibodies (EmA) of the IgA class are directed against reticulin components of the primate smooth muscle and are markers of gluten-sensitive enteropathy. These antibodies occur in essentially all active cases of celiac disease and in about 70% of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) patients. IgA deposits in the dermal papillae of the skin are the hallmark of DH and are employed routinely in establishing its diagnosis. The incidence of IgA deposits in skin varies depending upon the site and type of biopsy specimen taken. We studied sera and skin biopsy specimens for EmA and for IgA dep

Recent studies have modified remarkably our concepts regarding the hormonal control of the human menstrual cycle. The previously accepted hypothesis was mainly based on rat experiments. It postulated a single integrated hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian feedback system directed by a "CNS clock". Primate investigations now suggest two interrelated, but separable functional elements, i.e. a hypothalamic-pituitary unit and a gonadal-pituitary unit. The continuous pulsatile, yet unvarying hypothalamic secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) facilitates a direct pituitary response to changi

To determine if the endocrine response to microwave exposure was similar in a primate to that reported for other animals, rectal temperature and plasma levels of cortisol, thyroxine (T4), and growth hormone (GH) were measured in rhesus monkeys exposed to 1.29 GHz microwave radiation. Exposures were carried out under far-field conditions with the monkey restrained in a chair. Incident power densities of 0, 20, 28, and 38 mW/cm2 were used, with corresponding specific absorption rates of 0, 2.1, 3.0, and 4.1 W/kg. Blood samples were taken hourly via an indwelling jugular venous catheter over a 24

The hypoxic ventilatory response was determined in twelve unanesthetized newborn monkeys, Macaca nemestrina. Measurements of blood gases and ventilation were made during normoxia and hypoxia at the postnatal ages of 2, 7, and 21 days. Data were collected during quiet sleep. The infant monkey demonstrated a definite but transient hyperventilatory response following exposure to a FiO2 of 0.12 or 0.14 on the second day of life. Baseline ventilation increased 15% (Fi02=0.14) and 28% (Fi02=0.12) after 1 minute of hypoxia; p less than 0.05 in both instances. Return to baseline ventilation occurred b

Rhesus monkeys were experimentally infected with Lassa virus to establish their suitability as a nonhuman primate model for the human disease and to test the protective efficacy of ribavirin, an antiviral drug. Six of 10 untreated control monkeys died after subcutaneous inoculation of 10(6.1) plaque-forming units of Lassa virus (strain Josiah). Infectivity titrations of tissue homogenates from the six dead monkeys indicated significant replication in all tissues tested except the central nervous system. This distribution of virus was confirmed by direct immunofluorescence examination of cryost

The morphological constraint hypothesis suggests that primates with less dexterity show more consistent motor planning because there is less flexibility to compensate for inefficient actions. Spiders monkeys offer a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis because they do not have a functional thumb. Colombian spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps rufiventris, n=8) housed at a wildlife park were tested on a standard motor planning task. A trial began when a dowel baited on one end was placed on an elevated apparatus and ended when a monkey grasped the dowel with the hands. Grip use was coded from…

Unlike quadrupedal mammals, primates use diverse locomotor modes adapted to arboreal environments. Such diversity of movements challenges allometric models, which underestimate energetic costs by focusing on steady-state walking. To address this, we combined ethological and biomechanical approaches to estimate the net metabolic cost of transport in bonobos (Pan paniscus). Using three-dimensional tracking and a point-mass model, we derived this estimate from net mechanical power and muscle efficiency across locomotor modes. Our results show that quadrupedalism in bonobos (10-12 J kg⁻¹ m⁻¹) exce…

Avian pecking behavior in birds, analogous to reach-to-grasp in primates, is accompanied by unstable vision due to the co-location of the eyes and bills on the head. Fixation in birds, a brief pause during pecking, enables them to stabilize their visual input to plan their further movements. Several bird species have two high-acuity retinal regions, the area dorsalis and the fovea centralis, which receive input from frontal and lateral visual fields, respectively. However, the contributions of these regions to natural pecking during fixation, especially temporal dynamics and head posture invol…
